Justice Defends Story On Callahan Resignation Request
KMTV-3 Sports Director Travis Justice reported Thursday that two separate sources close to the Nebraska football program say Nebraska football Coach Bill Callahan told his team before Thursday's practice that he was asked to resign.
"Both of the sources tell Action 3 News that coach Callahan told the team to play for themselves as the coaching staff will more than likely not be around next season," read a story posted on the station's website.
Justice defended his report Friday, which has resulted in a flurry of Internet message board postings and several spin-off stories by other media outlets.
"I got tipped off late last night, checked it out this morning, verified it and ran with it," Justice said on the "The Big Show" on KXSP (590 AM).
"People are really upset about me that I didn't say who asked him (Callahan) to resign," Justice said. "It may have been Tom Osborne. I don't know. I reported what was said at practice yesterday.
"To me, the big part of the story is that this is the first time that he has taken time with his players to say 'we're in dire straights right now.'"
The Associated Press' Eric Olson first asked Callahan during Monday's Big 12 coaches teleconference whether he had been asked to submit his resignation. The question drew a nine-second pause before Callahan sidestepped the question.
If Callahan is fired at the end of the season, his contract calls for Nebraska to pay him more than $3 million.

Didn't Perrault go on and on just the other day about an anonymous quote on this blog? Demanding that Jim Minge come on his show and reveal his sources and tell who said that.
I'm anxious to hear them reveal their source on this one, in the spirit of the rant the other day.
The no spin station is now spinning it as "Well, see, he did address the team about resigning!" Well, Matthew and Travis, that is not exactly the same as "I have been asked to resign." Obviously, there have been many asking him to resign or be fired for that matter and of course he would address that with his team. But to spin this into "see tolda so" is ridiculous and par for the course with this duo.
That's like saying he came out and said he was gay but he really was talking about being carefree and gay....he may have said the word, but two different meanings there.
That's too funny about the "without the spin" station trying to spin stuff.
So, basically, KMTV was able to provide the vital information that Bill Callahan said the word resign in a speech to the team.

Perrault's over-the-top defense of the story on his show this afternoon was both hilarious and pathetic today.
Any remaining credibility he had seems to have gone right out the window.
Nebraska has a football team? Isn't it Aksarben? I thought Nebraska football died in 2003.
Devaney came from Wyoming, so I can't rule out outsiders in general, but dammit, there is a blood and guts style and tireless work ethic that is indigenous to the Nebraskan. People that bag on Osborne for potentially asking a coach to resign when he said he would evaluate the "staff" at the end of the season are nuts.
If you had a financial adviser, and you thought, "Well, I am losing some money, but I will evaluate my adviser at the end of year" and he starts losing money to the point of bankruptcy, you HAVE to cut him.
Why doesn't BC resign? Because he realizes that he will NEVER be a HC on ANY level ever again.

Where do Travis and Matt rank on the integrity scale compare to TO?
Travis reported that sources inside the program told him that Callahan addressed the team saying he had been asked to resign and that the kids should play for themselves.
No one is claiming that Callahan did *not* address the team and the current firestorm surrounding his coaching staff.
Other reports say that whoever told Travis that "misinterpreted" what Callahan said.
Travis didn't make stuff up, and to his credit reported on the fact that others claimed it didn't happen on Friday's 6pm.
He may be blustery, opinionated, and not like the current Husker staff... but he didn't make something up.
And to the poster who said A3N is draining Journal resources in town, you absolutely don't know what you're talking about.

I have to make a series of points here..
#1) Marvin Sanders was a fantastic coach who should play a major role in the future of the program.. He never should have been let go by Callahan and then replaced by a somewhat unobservant and archaic Elmassien.
#2) What does me being in London have to do with anything? Should I apologize for being in the financial capital of the world or one of the most dynamic and vibrant places on earth? Your right, maybe I would be better off in Weeping Water or Ashland getting making what are the equivalent to Canadian dollars and hearing the same old spiels from people like Jeff Fortenberry telling me about good clean Nebraska family values and profiting off thy fellow neighbors as the 11th commandment.
#3) My point about the 2004 election was simply that Bush's strategy was to personally attack Kerry instead of debating the issues, despite his own lack of credibility for the very same things he was attacking Kerry for. Your arguments seemed to be congruent with the way the Republican party has dumbed down the USA since Reagan.
#4) It's embarassing to see so many people getting so emotional about college athletics and investing so much of their own personal wealth in it.. Better to take a step back and enjoy it as entertainment, but have a grip on the important things in life.

Who says Travis is a fan? I didn't say that, just that he's not a hater of the whole program. He's stated his disdain and distrust of Pederson and, by extension, Callahan.
Travis did check with his sources, two of them. As said before, apparently their perception of Callahan's speech was different than others.
He doesn't have egg on his face, he used trusted, reliable, and most importantly verifiable sources before putting out the information.
There's obviously a difference of opinion within the program as to what Callahan said/meant.

Having known Travis Justice for many years now, I am, and always have been, convinced that he is in the Broadcasting business only to see himself on TV. He is not about Journalistic Integrity, nor is he a "Broadcast Professional", he is about "what will you give me FREE? I am on TV! Travis is Travis' #1 fan. So this story of "Sources tell me" crap is nothing more than a desperate need to feed his own ego. He's pulled crap like this before when he was at FOX. Thats how he ended up moving from the markets #3 station to #4.

So he's a journalist that may or may not be reporting facts. Hmmm. Methinks it's more represntative of Journal's attempts to pry viewers away from other sources by putting a story on the air FIRST, regardless if it can be vertified as factual or not. Trust me, among real journalists in town, Travis is far from the only one known at KM3rd to do this on a regular basis.

Well, I heard from my two sources within Journal Broadcasting that Matt Perrault WAS asked to resign on Monday, but has turned it down for now. Obviously, he is waiting to be fired so he can collect his unemployment.
Perrault's agent could not be reached for comment as he was out testing soil samples.
Trust me, if Matt DOES have an agent, that individual isn't qualified to do much more with soil than EAT it.

What Callahan is experiencing is what every coach from little league to the pros receives when he doesn't win, especially in Nebraska. How could you expect anything else when Tom Osborne and staff almost left for Colorado several years back because of all the fan dissatisfaction over winning only 9 games.

Exactly my point made in an earlier post, Matt. Apparently most of these folks that are doing the whining must be listening to your show if they know exactly what you are talking about. It's kind of funny really. For as much griping as they do; they don't seem to want to change the channel.

Some of us listen because that is our only option in our offices. We can't (or aren't allowed) to get the Zone via computer and their signal is not strong. So, we are stuck. Nonetheless, Te Perrault inserts himself everywhere, radio, websites, this blog and The Perrault never, ever likes to have anyone speak ill of him. The Perrault gets very angry when you do so.
Most likely reason that this topic has climbed over 100 posts: The fact it's the only thing offered here in the past week (save for the lame Christmas music press release above).
If the 'authors' of this site would actually do a bit of research & find fresh topics like, "worst sweeps piece so far", or "Why does KM3's winter forecast look almost exactly like the other two offered in town - because it was done last????", the comments about Matt would dwindle to numbers similar to those who actually listen to his daily show - next to none.

C'Mon O-me-haw. Matt and Trav are great to listen to. At least they are not homers for the Huskers. It's nice to have a different view of things. So they're not you're taste, then why are you listening to them? I persoanlly think both guys are great!
And as far as posts go; I don't see any of those other guys getting near the response that Matt and Trav have gotten.

For all of you who are so concerned that we are picking on Matt, take a look at the news headlines tonight - a death threat against Coach Cosgove. This poor lil' Matt is the one who supports verbal hostility to opposing teams at Creighton games and verbal confrontations with NU officials as others have outlined in comments in this blog and others. Obviously, the east coast mentality that Perrault presents is not the professional way of handling a show or representing a station. That kind of attitude is too prevalent in America today and certain wackos feel it is okay to take matters in their own hands.

Torie Pantaleon was a better sports talk host than Perrault too.
Bob Bruce at least brought a personality to the show. All S'vere wants to talk about is racism. Bruce would at least slap Kugler along side the head when he got whiny. Kugler and S'vere have a whine fest everytime I can stand to turn in....which is rare!

Seems a lot of petty jealousy on here for a group of people who are doing better than most of us...they are getting paid to talk sports. Who wins here? The guy who's cashing a check or those of us anonymous bloggers who aren't seeing a nickel?
It isn't jealously, it is the fact that they put The Perrault on the air to spew out insipid little remarks and, even though his ratings are in the sewer and he is arrogant beyond belief, they keep him on the air when they could put somebody like a Java or somebody who could give Creighton and Nebraska some air time but they aren't hateful with their speech.
Yesterday, after the death threat (singular by the way) news broke, The Perrault went on a rampage saying that "See, Nebraska fan,you are no different". Wow The Perrault, congratulations on sterotyping a whole fan base based on one stupid and soon to be felonious "fan". Way to make that jump in logic.
Aren't you the one who just advocated getting in opposing fans faces by the way? Hmm....

Yeah; you hate Perrault but apparently he gets your notice. I have yet to see any other post on this blog in the past year that has garnered as much attention as Trav and Matt here. Someone must be listening to them to warrant this response.
