Callahan Firing Coverage

Radio station KFAB posted this picture on its website Saturday morning. Bill Callahan waved to the cameras as he left his meeting Saturday morning with interim Athletic Director Tom Osborne.

Sean Callahan announced on WOWT-6 at 8:58 a.m. that Bill Callahan had been "terminated without cause" during the coach's meeting with Osborne. KOLN/KGIN in Lincoln began its coverage of the 9:30 a.m. press coverage at 9 a.m. At about the same time, the Lincoln Journal Star was reporting that LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini had been contacted by a search firm hired by Nebraska.

By 10 a.m., the Omaha World-Herald's online portal, Omaha.com, was no longer accessible, its server unable to handle the traffic load. Husker fan forums like Huskerpedia.com and Huskerboard.com were also operating at record traffic levels.

KMTV I think did the best job today.

I couldn't stand watching WOWT. Dave Webber has really got this unrequited love thing happening for Tom Osborne and it actually kind of creeps me out.

KETV? Totally dropped the ball.

Thank you KMTV employee. If only you guys could get information out to the public as effectively as you can comment on a blog then you wouldn't be action4th.

Are you sure this press conference really happened???? Travis - can you confirm that????

Anonymous said...

Omaha.com crashes! JournalStar.com lives on. no wonder I go to them for my Husker coverage.

Anonymous said...

I wish Sean Callahan would get fired. What a hack.

What did Sean Callahan do? He must be doing something right for him to hold the number of jobs he does? He works hand and hand with KFAB and WOWT, so it's no coincidence both of these stations arguably covered today's events better than anybody...just my thoughts.

All these news media people are phonys. everyone likes to take shots at Travis but hes just a baby phony compared to the likes of Dave Webber! Dave Webber was sucking Peterson's and Callahan's tit hard just a couple months back and then today he was standing there shaking his head and pretending that he had a clue as to what had transpired over the past few months.....Webber just goes with the flow kissing up to who ever is in power at the time.

I'm not sure what is expected from the stations. They all reported about the same stuff. They all showed the Osborne newser. They all had some type of analysis--this ain't Chicago or LA or ESPN.

Anonymous said...

Will someone elaborate on how KETV "dropped the ball"?

Anonymous said...

Now that Callahan the elder is gone, Callahan the younger (Sean) is going to have to find another high-profile butt to kiss. Without BC's obsession to national recruiting sites like Rivals, Sean Callahan's days of being "an insider" might be over.

Anonymous said...

Why do people on this blog hate so bad on everybody else? My god, is everybody that bitter?

Anonymous said...

Yeah Callahan might have "confirmed" (or rolled the dice) the firing, but how could you tell when the live shot sounds like sizzling bacon? mmmm bacon.

you sure it wasn't Ace Frehley?

KETV dropped the ball meaning they were pretty lame with the "breaking news" interruption. They just had Jon Scheutz whispering off camera at the press conference. Couldn't understand what he was saying.

Then yesterday, they interrupted another football game Friday with Callahan's press conference where, quite surprisingly (insert sarcastic tone), Callahan made no speculation about his future at Nebraska. Yeah, thanks for that. Didn't see that coming.

Michael Carnes said...

KETV did a very good job covering the news conference. It was simple and focused on the morning's events before the conference and Osborne's comments themselves. A very professional job, which is the main reason why most people watch KETV news to begin with.

And, no, this is not a KETV employee commenting...just somebody who knows good quality journalism.

Wall to wall coverage was not needed for this event. Action3 made it seem like a natural disaster hit the metro with their Callahan coverage. KETV broke in when it was justified, and delivered the facts.

Dingbat, if you were disappointed with the coverage so much, here is an idea; change the channel! You reek of bitterness.

Anonymous said...

Bitterness? Or incompetence? It's so hard to tell with that yahoo..

Anonymous said...

I assure you. I'm not bitter. I was going to change the channel. But their coverage was over before I got the chance. Not sure why its called bitterness to make criticism.

And please don't say KETV doesn't over analyze every piece of Nebraska Cornhusker minutiae. They have an entire hour's worth of pre-game coverage for two 5-6 teams.

And incompetence? I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean. Is that an assumption that I work in the media? I wouldn't make it in the media...I'm not thin-skinned enough. But even I would know enough not to interrupt another college football game with pointless commentary.

Anonymous said...

"But even I would know enough not to interrupt another college football game with pointless commentary."

Then you obviously know nothing about the importance of Nebraska football to the people of this state, who would much rather hear a news conference with no news than sit through an otherwise-meaningless (from a Nebraska perspective) football game.

That's called serving your demo ding-dong.

Anonymous said...

who's sean callahan?

Anonymous said...

Gotta cover them Huskers wall to wall for all their 'fans' that graduate from Metro, Bellevue University, UNO, the University of Phoenix, Wayne State, etc......
Most of the 'fans' never actually attended any sort of class in Lincoln.
That's what's so pathetic around here! Most places, you root/cheer for the college which you ACTUALLY ATTENDED - then pick a pro team to associate with. In good ole Nebraska, EVERYONE is a Husker fan. It's kind of like pro sports lite!

Michael Carnes said...

I'm not a UNL alum, but I was a Husker fan LONG before I was in college. The people of Nebraska have had a long, storied interest in Husker football, dating back to the start of the 20th century, regardless of where (or if) they went to college.

The college you attend has little, if anything, to do with your favorite team. I know several Nebraska alumni who are fans of teams other than the Huskers. Does that mean Creighton grads can't be fans of ANY college football team, since they have no college football program?

How little sense does your comment make, really?

Anonymous said...

Hey, MC, we don't post here specifically for you to "like" anything.
If the truth hurts, it probably hit too close to home......

Anonymous said...

Okay. I would be okay with interrupting other programming if the event was actually going to be at least partially newsworthy.

But when was the last time Callahan gave a post-game press conference that didn't include the following:

- "I'm just really proud of my players"
- "The opposing team played a great game"
- "No I don't think the opposing coach ran up the score"
- "I'm not going to speculate on whether or not I'll be fired"
(And don't say the K-State game, that's cheating)

Go ahead and find me a viewer who said, "Now I feel enlightened. I simply would have burst if I had to wait 3 hours for those kind of juicy details"

If the viewers were salivating for more Husker coverage after the game, why did they go ahead and air the following game? Why not do another 5 hours of post game coverage? Kind of surprised they were able to restrain themselves.

The Omaha World Herald in their infinite lack of class has published pictures of fans holding Anti-Callahan signs at the CU game from Friday and the NU-CU basketball game on Saturday in their print editions. Please tell me, OWH brass, where fans holding signs become part of the news story - especially at a BASKETBALL game - that has nothing to do with football????????????????

PLEASE SHOW ME A GOOD ACTION SHOT OF A CHEERLEADER FOR GOD'S SAKE INSTEAD OF SOME LOUD MOUTH FAN WHO HAS AN AXE TO GRIND. It is a two or 3 fans out of 17,000 that do not deserve the attention.

IMO, it is a poor use of newspaper space.

Obviously you are not acquainted with the state of Nebraska, and let me preface it to make myself clear, I am not a Nebraska fan.

The state of Nebraska does not have any pro sports franchises; this is why the majority of the people in this state follow the Cornhuskers. The Cornhuskers are their pro team regardless of where anyone attended school. It is what unites the state from border to border in pride.

Anonymous said...

Oh alright, I'll say it: I simply would have burst if I had to wait 3 hours for those kind of juicy details. I'll even go one further and say I was absolutely shocked after that press conference...Callahan made no guesses on if he would be fired or not! That blew me away...Usually the man wouldn't shut up about it. I was feeling mighty bad for the sports media. It was impossible for you guys to get Callahan to talk about the team or the game. Every time you tried, he'd change the subject back to whether or not he'd be fired.

I don't understand why these insolent fools would dare slam KETV on this comment board. The by-laws explicitly state you are only allowed to slam WOWT, Matt Perrault, and KMTV (specificially Travis Justice, but if the phrase "KM3rd" is included, the slam will most likely be approved)

Sub-Section 17-Beta (Article IV) of the code does, however, authorize slamming of KETV's Farah Fazal. But even then, application forms must be filled out in triplicate and said slamming must include the word "fubar".

LOL 7:43 Freekin' hilarious.

Whats going on here I was outside playing!! And I had a date!

Anonymous said...

Did anyone else notice NET dropped regular programming to go to the Osborne newser? No commentary...just went to it, carried it live, then went back to programming.

Anonymous said...

Ok, just saw a commercial for a new product from the Stanley Tool Company. Not making this up...the Fubar Demolition Tool. Brings all sort of images to mind. Out freekin standing.

Anonymous said...

They just ran the press conference and that's it? Where's the fun in that? We need a couple dozen people I never heard of chiming in with their thoughts about the press conference.

Anonymous said...

You mean like Matt Perrault?

Oh wait...you said people you never HEARD of, not people you wish would be eliminated from the airwaves...my bad.

Anonymous said...

Taking a break from Callahan...

Why haven't there been any posts about the staff changes at KETV and WOWT?

Did I miss the post about Nicole Burlee (sp?)? What station did she come from? Any Omaha ties?

Why no post about Paul Baltes' move from WOWT to UNMC?

And what about the new reporters at WOWT? I think I've seen two new male reporters so far over the last week...

Anonymous said...

KMTV by far did the worst job covering the story... They missed broadcasting the info about the press conference by at least an hour when compared to WOWT and KETV. My kids were happy atleast - since their cartoons weren't interrupted.

Anonymous said...

I JUST WANT IT TO BE OOOOOOVVVVEERRRRR!!!GAH!

Anonymous said...

Did you hear The Perrault said he turned down two, count them two, job offers in the last six months.

Seems to me, however, that he is sending out tapes to get the heck out of Dodge...errr...Omaha.

Anonymous said...

God. Why such terrible bitterness?? If you hate that station so much. Just change the channel. Read a book. Tend to the homeless. Work on splitting the atom.

Wait...You were talking about KMTV and not KETV. Carry on.

Anonymous said...

Good Lord, who is this person so concerned with everyone's "bitterness" seems like every other post on this site, this person says why so bitter or why the bitterness. Are you a teenage girl who hasn't outgrown the unicorn posters on your bedroom wall? Here's some new words from the thesaurus- aggrieved, begrudging, rancorous, spiteful, jaundiced, ill-disposed, sullen, sour, churlish, morose, petulant, peevish, with a chip on one's shoulder.
And, for the record, I don't want to turn it off or change the channel. I don't want to hold hands and sing kumbaia. If I don't like something, I want to express my dissatisfaction and thereby possibly start a discussion towards fixing the problem.

Anonymous said...

Was anyone else just a little disturbed that the World-Herald had a reporter staked outside Callahan's home Saturday morning to follow him into town? I'm not a Callahan supporter, but, geez, give the man some peace in his own home, for Pete's sake.

Go ahead and criticize Channel 7. I triple dog dare you. And we will see how many people you have jumping down your throat.

Its one of two things. 1) The majority of the people who read these comments are from Channel 7. 2) There is no majority and the answer is simply the folks at Channel 7 are the most insecure and the least able to handle criticism

Anonymous said...

Or some of us that are posting aren't from channel 7 but we just dislike channel 6 that much. Only a matter of taste and opinion.
