The 'Buzz' Turns 1

“Omaha Buzz” – WOWT-6’s locally produced entertainment-driven show aimed at 20- and 30-somethings – celebrated its first year on the air recently. It airs each Wednesday at 8 p.m. on WOWT’s digital signal on channel 620.

The brightly colored, fast-paced show might seem a tad cheesy to the hipsters in town, but for club-hoppers and social butterflies, “Omaha Buzz” provides a look inside Omaha’s nightlife scene and all things entertaining.

“It’s your V.I.P. pass to Omaha,” said the show’s creator Vic Richards, who also handles promotions for WOWT. “We take you to new venues, local concerts, interviews with local bands, visiting bands, new bars/clubs, events, nightlife.”

this show couldn't suck enough...

absolute waste of resources at 6. way to hire your sister richards, thats classy.

Anonymous said...

Pffftttt...

Anonymous said...

This show is God awful. Talk to anybody at 6 (except Vic) and they'll tell you that it is a complete waste of time, resources, and personnel. You would be better off watching the Faces of Death series on video each week, at least it was entertaining.

Anonymous said...

Management at 6 must know what they're doing?
Having the 'promotions director' put together & play VJ for this cable-access show during time that he should actually be promoting the news product (which generates revenue for the station). When was the last time an actual promotion was seen there that didn't look like it was slapped together in about :30??? Oh, well, at least the vast majority of people in Omaha have never even glimpsed this joke - only the "cool ones" who "star in it!

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry to say this because I really like Vic, but the above poster is right. 6's promotions department is already the smallest in the market and they're wasting precious time and resources to put out a weekly show that no one watches. Vic's one of the hardest workers at 6. Unfortunately most of his energy is misdirected. He's more interested in making the station hip than promoting the boring news.

Anonymous said...

So Vic's sister is the host?

And is she getting paid for it?

This is almost harder to believe than the excuse Channel Sux gave when Tracy Madden was out getting her moles removed.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous @ 5:51 am, do you work for Channel 6? If you do, you are sorely mistaken, Vic hardly works! I "work" and use that term loosely, with Vic.
Seriously, "the hardest worker?"!!!!! More like hardly working. His staff is constantly working overtime on that pathetic show, and are underpaid.

Anonymous said...

The buzz is not really the worst part but 620 is. The only reason it exists is bc they lost UPN Omaha. The buzz is really just another version of the KXVO news but is somehow not cancled.

Easily one of the top five WORST shows in the history of television....the fact that it has lasted one year is yet another testament to how LOW the bar is set for quality in television news/entertainment....

Another example: Brian New gets a reporter job in San Antonio...somebody better get the good people of San Antonio some uppers because he'll put them to sleep. He has NO business being in television news.

Anonymous said...

Where's Brian McFayden? He would be perfect on this show.

Anonymous said...

8:15 AM: F**CK you! Who the hell do you think you are? What gives you the "high-and-mighty" power to delegate who should be in television news and who shouldn't? Give me a break! Last time I checked Channel 6 was on top in the ratings, they have a solid news team, some of the best in the business. I'll take WOWT anytime over the crap at Newsbotch 7. Can't stand the awfully-looking anchor team with no emotion or appeal. Good lord people!

Anonymous said...

When I saw BUZZ in the title, I was hopeful that Jim would be doing another great feature article on Todd N Tyler but alas my HIGH hopes went UP IN SMOKE!

Anonymous said...

I gotta go hock a loogie.....excuse me man!

Anonymous said...

Ah...you knew it wouldn't be long before channel 6 employees like post 3:17 PM would have to take issue with this post, as they can't stand to get their insecure feelings hurt if someone doesn't like them.

Anonymous said...

Yeah...six is so great that I had to switch on Friday night because they led with a Veterans' celebration while KETV was out reporting on a carjacking that never even made six. C'mon guys...you want to keep people give us some real news...and yes...I was a long time six viewer that has recently switched because I DO want local news and I found it on KETV. Now, if only more people would wake up and make the change.

Anonymous said...

So let me get this straight. 7 is the station to watch because they report on a carjacking story handed to them by OPD that doesn't affect 99% of the viewers. Whereas 6 blew it because they decided to report on veterans in a town with has a considerable military population.

It's not hard to see that each station has carved out a niche in this market. There's a reason that you never see that much separation between the two in the ratings. 7 gets the viewers that are into carjackings, murders and car chases. 6 has the viewers that are more into features, fluff and consumer reports. I'm not saying that one is better than the other. It depends on your personal viewing preference. But both seem to be pretty happy doing it their way.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like "lower socio-economic" vs. "upper socio-economic" viewing habits......
Nice accurate observation 10:42. Refreshing change from the childish namecalling.

Anonymous said...

Put another way; Six is just lazy, whereas 7 actually goes out and chases the stories that DO matter. Keep catering to your loyal Blue Hairs, but remember, they will eventually drop off and then where will you be...?

Anonymous said...

Actually you could consider both lazy journalism. One station is chasing police scanner traffic and rewriting OPD press releases. The other is sending a reporter out to a planned event to get some pretty pictures and talk to a few locals. Both require about the same amount of work and thought. And blue hairs don't go away, they're just replaced by other blue hairs. Can you say baby-boomers?

Anonymous said...

10:42 AM:

How can you say it doesn't affect most of Omaha? I would say most people actually would prefer to know about the dangers on the street rather than a bunch of veterans getting together to fire off a 21 gun salute. (Actually, with fading eyesight, that might be kind of interesting after all)

Anonymous said...

12:48 PM you are correct in that assessment. This just goes to show that KPTM and KMTV are the hardest working stations in town.

Anonymous said...

Come off it! Seven puts out so much better quality than six it's pitiful. I would even rather watch seven on the weekends than six because at least they HAVE local news content. Six: Let's do a national story that everyone can see on CNN or the nightly news, follow it up with weather by saying "let's take a break from the news." of which there was none, which causes a guffaw to rise from my lips, and follow it up with some happy crap no one cares about. That's about the gist of the weekend news on six. C'mon people...admit it. Seven has a much higher quality than six.

Anonymous said...

Here come all the six apologists. No...more like sheep to the s*%t. And man does it stink...on ice...

Anonymous said...

You know it is really sad, but after reading the post by 12:56 PM, I've suddenly come to realize that he's right. I've been a longtime viewer of six and he has hit the nail on the head on this one. I never realized it before.

Signed,

One of the sheep

Anonymous said...

We've gotten waaay off topic here, but it's too late to go back.

I never said they shouldn't report on a carjacking. I just didn't understand the rationale of the 6:27 poster. Trust me, if you're a vet, currently serving or have relatives that serve, you're more likely to watch the story about veterans.

That's fine if you're more concerned about violent crime in Omaha. But most folks are numb to these stories and could care less. Now, if 7 gave useful information about this type of crime instead of just rehashing the police report then I would say it's a better story. What are the statistics? Where do most of these crimes occur? What are steps I can take to prevent this from happening? Or in the case of this event, how do you prevent road rage?

Anonymous said...

I love it! My station's better than yours.

Now if we could just get Flowers and Ramby to fight to the death in a steel cage match it would be perfect.

Anonymous said...

1:13 PM at least they are informing people about events that might concern their lives. How many younger veterans do you think are actually watching six because of their veterans coverage? I can pretty much tell you that the numbers are not that great because I am a veteran and I don't watch them. I AM more concerned about what's happening in the community and that is WHY I watch seven, as well as many of my peers. We are more concerned about what is happening in our community, specifically relating to crime than ceremonies that we are all well aware of. Sorry, your argument does not wash.

Anonymous said...

I think Jaime McCutcheon is hottttt!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Like I said (twice now), Some people like the crime stories and watch seven (like you) and some like the features and fluff and watch 6. I'm not claiming that one's better than the other. And please don't try to pass off your precepion on the numbers as fact. Just because you and your "peers" watch 7 doesn't mean they have the corner on that market share.

Anonymous said...

I love how people come on here an claim that one station is better than the other and then cite a carjacking story as the reason. Face it, all the newscasts in town are basically mirror images of each other. They throw out all this jargon, rewrite news paper articles and report on crime stories that happened hours ago as breaking news. If someone here will give me 10 clear expamples (that isn't their opinion) on how one station is better than the other, I'll run naked down Dodge.

Anonymous said...

I like the earlier comment about the steel cage death match. I'd pay good money to see that.
This whole argument about which station is better is assinine. It's like saying everready batteries are better than duracel. They both provide power to what you want them to provide power to, they just look different.
Now to get back on topic, the Buzz is hideous. The middle schoolers out at Buffett are putting out a better product than these "professionals". I have to use that term very lightly in this instance.

Anonymous said...

By the way 2:52 PM just so you know, since you seem to be mr or ms authority on newscasts in this town, channel 7 also did a piece on the veterans, they just did it later in the newscast in order to report on local breaking news, which is what 6 should have done as well. As far as 7 and crime stories I concur and 6 and fluff pieces I also concur. Also, you would do well not to pass YOUR numbers off as fact either in that most veterans watch channel 6, as stated in your 1:13 post. If this is true; then I would like to know just where you are getting your numbers at.

Suffice to say, we watch 7 because they DO have more local coverage than 6. Sorry if we offend your sensibilities because we are not fawning over 6.

Anonymous said...

Let's face it. The argument is a moot point. Every station in this town sucks. The consultants have ruined all of it.

Anonymous said...

I think Matt Perrault should run the Big Show live over all the newscasts. They could certainly learn a lot from a consumate professional.

Anonymous said...

At least someone recognizes that Omaha needs a show like the Buzz. While it may not be great television, at least it strives to serve the niche group that it appeals to and I think many would be surprised by how many people are watching.

Anonymous said...

6:33, I doubt many of the people the Buzz targets actually watch TV.

As for Vic, he just needs to come out.

Anonymous said...

I watch it and I am 13...

Anonymous said...

The only good thing about "The Omaha Buzz"...Jessica Perea she's smokin' hot!!! I would actually watch 6 News if she was on there.

Anonymous said...

You're not the target audience, 7:28. The target is 21-34, and instead of watching the "Buzz," they're actually out at the concerts, bars, etc.

Anonymous said...

Who said I had a life?

Anonymous said...

I hope 11:13 was being funny, as it would quite sad if they thought a 13 year old girl was posting on here. I speak for all 14 year olds.

Anonymous said...

oh my god, good lord people! get a handle on yourselves, especially the KETV producers who are posting on here. come on! get over it and face the music. Channel 7 will never own up to the reputation Channel 6 has. Blue hairs or not, WOWT is and has always been the 800pound Gorilla in this market.

They've dominated the market ever since Julie Cornell pushed out Carol Schrader and was paired with Rob. A lot of people left KETV because of Julie and the news director Roseann Shannon. And that's a fact!

People who are posting on here, think they know it all. I don't claim to know everything, but one thing I do know -- Channel 6 has a great formula. It's been working for many years. Why should viewers change their habits? No matter how hard Channel 7 pushes, even if they gain a bit of ground which they have, they'll never be on top. Plain and simple.

People like consistency! This market is largely conservative in a conservative state. WOWT's style is conservative but it's worked for over a number of years. There are many hard working people at both shops.

Good lord, you all need to calm down a bit and get off your high horse!

Anonymous said...

9:25 PM:

I think you might need to get your facts straight...WOWT was not always number one. In fact; I recall well that they were in the cellar at one point. The pendulum swings, my friend, and will swing back toward KETV eventually. Times change, my friend, and if you do not change with them...you will find that you (WOWT) is no longer relevant.

Anonymous said...

What is amusing about this is the fact that over all, given ratings books, the majority of Omahans are not even paying attention to the pathetic little preening popinjays that prattle on any of the stations. Let's face it; it's all crap. Get over yourselves already!

Anonymous said...

6:50 AM: You are so stupid! Did you read my entire post or did you just focus on only a few things? I DID say that WOWT wasn't always the ratings leader, in fact I mentioned the Carol Schrader and Michael Scott era. God, you people suck!

And who you calling irrelevant? What I find most amusing about you KETV supporters, you're just like the folks over there at Newsbotch 7--Channel 7 is looking for total domination of this market and it's not gonna happen! at least not anytime in the near future. When they get rid of their current main anchor team, perhaps.

God, I always wondered why they've held on to Rob and Julie for so many years. When you think of credibility, Carol Schrader, John Knicely, Tracy Madden and Jim Flowers come to mind. But that's just me. And you need to get your facts straight 6:50 AM, this forum is for adults, not kiddies and whiny-cry baby KETV producers like you. Ha!

Anonymous said...

This is 6:50 AM responding to 8:59 AM:

I absolutely love stirring you idiots at 6 up. It is so easy to do because you are so sensitive to criticism. And by the way I did read your entire entry and you DID say "WOWT is and has ALWAYS been the 800pound Gorilla in this market". Then you go back to correct yourself. I think you better get an editor to go over your posts for you. Idiot.

Now c'mon six apologist, start your cry baby routine again. I'm waiting.

Anonymous said...

Hey 8:59 AM, talk about crybabies and kiddies...I think the only child on this forum is you, as it seems anyone that ever criticizes six warrants a scathing response from you. Methinks thou dost protest too much. Six is bland and always will be until they fire the bunch of you and get people in there that are not lazy loafers regurgitating national news or peddling a bunch of nonsense over the airwaves. Is it any wonder that viewership is declining on local news stations. And for the sake of my opinion, I will sign my name. Will you do the same? Doubt it.

Boy...it is as easy to get the six employees stirred up as it is to get Matt Perrault stirred up. You gotta love the way they all troll the blogs looking for a reason to get upset. Har! Har! Har!

Anonymous said...

6:50 AM who pooped in your Wheaties this morning? Six having superior product...?...thanks for the best laugh I'll have this side of the comic pages today!

Anonymous said...

I think the truth lies in the middle. Even though the buzz may not be great at least they think enough of the omaha tv market to expand their services. KETV on the other hand while having a better proudction quality is too glosy and seems to fake.KETV has an 24 hour weather channel, what a waste. WOWT is not perfect for their talent, set graphics and stories but that is why they are/were popular. Personally I think they both need an over haul to start fresh.

Anonymous said...

8:59 AM:

You start calling people names and then have the audcity to call them childish...? Pot meet kettle. :)

Anonymous said...

11:56 AM

You make a great point. None of them are perfect and all have their good points and their bad points. There really is no difference between the two.

Anonymous said...

ohh good lord people. get over it! look at the other stations in the market. Channel 6 always takes a beating from those who are trying be better (KETV staffers and supporters). Sorry, KETV would be number one if a. they get rid of their sensationalism, b. they get rid of their main anchor talent and c. none of that will ever happen. . . har har har!

good lord people, you crack me up! getting all bent out of shape because KETV isn't in the lead! Quit your moaning and groaning and move on! That's the problem with you folks, you spend too much time worrying about ratings and not enough time just doing your jobs!

come on folks, WOWT is the news leader, it's a given! it's been that way for many years. I don't see it changing anytime soon! but honestly, who cares? there are so many people on here, namely six bashers, KETV employees and their supporters! give me a break, since when did this blog become all about WOWT bashing? Someone's gotta come to their defense!

give it up people, shut up and quit your complaining! geez, you guys spend so much time trying so hard to make legitimate points, who cares? my god, who cares if I said "kiddies and whiny-crybaby people" gosh, did that offend any of the KETV staffers, if it did, then grow up and get over it!

just face the music: you'll never be as good as WOWT. haha!

Anonymous said...

Why don't we just acknowlege that there are enough viewers for each station in town. There's always a reason that someone picks station W over station E, or likes channel M over what channel P puts out. The only ones that come out on top with regards to ratings are the sales people. I've never heard of an anchor getting a bonus due to a tenth of a point jump in the Female 24-36 category during a June book.
The ones here who claim a station is bland or station B didn't cover the same stories that another did are the same ones who would freeze up & cr!p out a square brick if they actually had to stand in front of a red light & do the jobs that these broadcasters do day in & day out!

Anonymous said...

yeah, I second 4:33 PM's opinion! there's a lot of people on here who couldn't do the job these broadcasters do day in and day out, so all of you picking on WOWT, put up or shut up. what do you all have that merit's such negative views and pure hatred for Channel 6? good grief people! lay off!

Anonymous said...

man that 6:50 AM and 9:11 AM is straight up wack. I think I have an idea who it is too. These crazy folks over at Channel 7 need to lay off. Their product sucks, because there's no ethics, accuracy or quality involved. In fact, they're no better than Action 3 News, the king of theatrics! geez, people when are you'all gonna grow up and wake up? six is the best station in town, and I don't see them loosing ground anytime soon!

Anonymous said...

loosing?
Geez, don't they teach 'spellcheck' in high school anymore?????

The fact remains, you are all pacifist TV watchers and follow obediently, the bottom line is that you watch something. do you think hearst or grey, f i mean even clear channel, care what you think...NO! They want your money and they want your time...

Hey Im a 30 year old female and I think that the Omaha Buzz is really trying to show me how to have a good time, yes it may be a little cheesy, but lets face it, when Im home on a given night i go check out the web site to see whats going on around Omaha, I have found some fun places to go... so even if it isn't that great of TV, its showing Omaha how to have a good time....does anyone know of any of the talent thats on there? I heard of this Chase guy...and Jessica

4:39 PM

Oh you are so original...calling 1:23 PM a first grader after they call you a sixteen year old. Heh, heh. But then; what else would I expect from a channel six employee...there is no creativity or imagination there. Just steal the copy and mouth it back. Har, har, har! You are so easy to agitate. And 1:23 PM did have it wrong...six doesn't suck eggs...six sucks ass. I've never seen such a pathetic show in all my years of television viewing. Last night there was no local news on "sicks", football covereage with some over the hill washout that couldn't make it on channel seven...weather with a meteorologist that claims to be the "most experienced in the heartland", perhaps on television, but not according to my sources at the weather service...the tired and true blac friday garbage and then on to national news. Boy...you people sure earn your paychecks, don't you? I wish I could come in and underperform like you do and still manage to keep my job.

Anonymous said...

Oh by the way; I meant to say "black", but I was having so much fun bashing the pathetic content of the big sux. C'mon idiot, respond now. I know you can't just let this go, can you? You have some incessant desire to defend your poor excuse for a newscast. What are you...the consultant's brother?

Anonymous said...

Hey 4:39 PM when are you going to just admit that 7 puts out an infinitely better product than 6 does? 6 is tired and old and bland. 7 is vibrant and follows happenings within the Omaha area. 6 would rather cover the local art and crafts fair while a high speed chase rolls right by their garage door. Doesn't matter what you say, baby, 7 is on the move upward, while you are on the move downward. And no...I am not a channel 7 employee. I am merely a person with an interest in local media. Perhaps I am a consultant. ;)

Anonymous said...

To all the naysayers around here...I think Channel 6 has the most stable crew and employee base in the Metro area. That is why I watch them morning and night. I care about what is going on in the community and not watching some great expose of depressing city crime. 6 at least carries a positive spin on most newscasts. Thank you Channel 6 for the wonderful stories that you show. I especially liked Malorie Maddox's story on the Iowa School for the Deaf. That, my friends, was what the news should be about.

One other thing...I wish that if the above poster is from channel 6, they would just take the high road and not let these idiot's comments get to them.

Anonymous said...

4:39 PM

You channel 6 employees are the last people that should be criticizing spelling errors when you can't even manage to get your own spelling correct in a number of YOUR own newscasts. Pot meet kettle.

Anonymous said...

yeah, six has the best content! they have high school cribs, good feature stories, a lot of health and parenting stories, they're just all around really good at what they do regardless of what the folks over at channel 7 say. god, I can't stand them people.

I agree with a few posts awhile back, channel 7 is so sensational! I can't stand their sensational writing style! plus they report directly from scanner traffic and rewrite press releases.

Channel 6 you are the best station in town, I don't care how hard the idiots over at channel 7 bash you guys! they'll never attain the great reputation you have here in omaha.

This reminds me of a group of third graders arguing over who has the best snow fort. There really isn't any in depth hard hitting news coverage in Omaha, and never will be, because, gosh, it's just so much work. The true test of an anchor is to pull the plug on the teleprompter. 99.95 percent of them will stare into the camera not knowing what to do next. It's a rare television anchor (and usually someone who has their beginnings in radio) who can handle that. They are, for all intents at purposes, mindless, rattling off the words and sentences as they scroll across the prompter. Local television news sucks. None of the support team can spell words that are longer than 4 letters so the banners are almost always screwed up. I think I'll tune in the BBC for a while.
