Colorado Columnist Explores Nebraska Differences

John Peel is certainly not the first newspaper columnist to explore the differences between Colorado and Nebraska. (Denver Post sports writer Woody Paige immediately comes to mind.)

But Peel, a writer for the Durango Herald, does offer some unusual insight in his observation of the Cornhusker state in a column published over the Memorial Day weekend.

For instance, Peel writes that "people in Nebraska are noticeably larger."

Maybe it was just the buffet restaurant we went to - a smorgasbord featuring dozens of pastas, greasy foods and at least two types of brownies in a fantastic dessert bar - but it sure seems that eating in the Midwest is a serious pastime.

Peel points out that Nebraska ranks 17th in obese adults (at 25.1 percent), while Colorado is the thinnest state.

Did you actually read the column? It wasn't bad at all as opposed to a Woody Paige blast.

As a native of Colorado; I can tell you that not all of us are Colorado Buffalo fans. Some of us are Colorado State fans. (Ooops, guess I don't have much to brag about there either, do I?) :) See some of us from out west do have a sense of humor.

Does anyone have the link to Woody Paiges comparasion of Nebraska and Colorado?

Actually, the article is pretty much on target. Most people from Omaha don't realize how varied the terrain is in Nebraska, and taking Hwy 92 west would open the eyes of most in Omaha.

Thank you Photofarm. As a former Western Nebraskan, it's nice to know that there are people who actually get out to see the western part of the state.

Who would've thunk it ?!? NO anorexics at the all you can eat buffet ?!?

And, TWO types of brownies ?!? Stop the madness that's just sheer craziness, two types of brownies. Pffttt.

What a great Memorial Day tribute to talk shit on your neighboring state, instead of the alternative and talking about MEMORIAL DAY.

The Durango Herald, huh? Good to see that Mr. Peel's really hit the big time.

wow, why don't Nebraskans have any humor.....We can make fun of colorado with no problem, but yet a writer writes about his 1st impression, he is wrong. I have lived here since 85, and this state is so uptight about its image....

Change is good, by the way....if change wasn't, I would of never moved here....

Oh so now we're fat and lacking humor ?!?!

Ha, I'm totally kidding...see I can make a funny.

The thing is, the column wasn't funny, or really meant to be, was it ? If it was then ok, but it bombed.

Peel has the right to voice his impression and view on Nebraska as much as the next guy. Just as I can about him (Peel).

Change is good...? Not that I disagree but I don't get how that has anything to do with the price of beans in China. *snort*

K, thanks, bye

Yeah, people from Colorado have no problem at all laughing at Nebraska, but they sure enjoy coming to McConaughey over the summer months.

Considering some of the dimwits that live in Colorado -- I'd say any "slam" a Colorado columnist makes could be taken as a compliment.

That state is becoming more left-wing loony by the day. They're starting to make Massachusetts look conservative.

Gotta be Valentinos! Those brownies (both of them) are GOOD! :)

I thought this was a nice column. Not funny, not critical, just his observations on a family trip.

I thought it was complimentary, nice comments about the Sandhills.

I am the first to bristle at back-handed "observations." I didn't see this as one of those. It felt like a genuine look at Nebraska from someone who is new to the state.
