Was It Really Just The TV Reporters?

From Thursday's Omaha World-Herald:

Television reporters peppered head coach Bill Callahan about his job status Wednesday after reckless rumors dotted the Internet and sports radio. Callahan was even asked - after completing practice - if there was a firing announcement coming.

Inquiring minds want to know if this is true or is the state's largest newspaper taking shots at the electronic broadcast industry folk again?

As somebody that was there...I can confirm it was the TV News reporters that peppered Callahan with the rumor questions.

I would really doubt that. Pretty low class to single out TV folk, you all drink from the same pond.

I know KMTV did that. These stations are just plain hungry for another firing. Though I imagine they're praying for the next round to wait until ratings sweeps time.

reporting rumors. seems kind of contrary to the idea of news.

Why is it considered wrong to ask Callahan if he's going to be fired? Would Pederson have been fired if the football team was undefeated? I doubt it. Perlman would not have rocked the boat with a winning team. Wait til the season is over. Remember, Solich was fired after a "dismal" 9-3 record.

Reporters using internet chat rumors to fuel speculation? Nahhhhh....

Joe Jordan must have been absolutely tingling with anticipation....I do not watch 3, but do they keep him on standby for just these occasions when he can go down to Lincoln and make an ass of himself....or do they let him make an ass of himself regularly?

Point of fact, previous to this, the story of the impending firing of Smiley happened on the internet. Additionally, John Fricke of Fox Sports Radio (national) said he had checked with four sources and confirmed it was going to happen.

Yeah, I struggled with including the rumors as a part of my story about Tom Osborne's first day on the job as AD. My producer and I discussed it and we decided it was worth a mention, since Husker Nation was talking about the rumors all day. Plus Sports Information was inundated with so many phone calls about the rumored firings of Callahan and staff, it had to alert Osborne. I asked Callahan legitimate questions that had to be asked. I asked him not only what he thought about the rumors, but also was he nervous with his new boss watching him, did he feel his job was safe for now, etc. In fact, OWH used some of his answers in its quotes from questions this television reporter asked. Sports Reporters and writers are there to talk about the game, but there was a news story there as well. The focus of the story was not to give creedence to the rumors, but to put them to rest. All part of the first day on the job for Tom Osborne. Thanks for watching Action 3 News. Michelle Bandur, Reporter, michelle@action3news.com

Thanks for the input Michelle. I've always thought you were one heck of a reporter and sorry to say, I wish you were on one of the other stations so I could see more of you. Great Job as usual!

Michelle...learn to spell or use spell check. You want to avoid giving "credence" to the rumors, not give "creedence" to the Clearwater Revival

Dang, give the woman a break. Its a comment board, not a formal draft of an international peace treaty to be submitted before the United Nations Security Council.

I think I can overlook a typo.

thanks News Center 3 Alum for the correction. But you should know that's why I went into TV, I don't need to know how to spell. (for those of you who don't know, that's a joke!)

The only 2 indivduals in town who are more jealous of TV broadcast folks than newspaper reporters are Weenie & the Butt over at Z92. I mean it's pathetic how badly they whine about wanting to be noticed by the magic box!!!

LJS and OWH reporters, I'm guessing, used their sources and checked out the rumors before going to practice. Interesting concept. Notice both buried the whole exchange, but apparently thought it at least had to be acknowledged.

Spelling at a TV station only matters when you're typing up your supers. But it is funny seeing anything spelled wrong when watching closed captioning. Other than that, as I say when on yahoo messenger, no one is graded on spelling when typing online.

Or, maybe, they would have eventually asked those same questions, but others beat them to the punch.
