Huskers Down, Schick's Blog Up
KETV-7 weekend sports anchor Matt Schick has one of the most popular blogs going right now in Omaha. His “Schick’s Shtick” blog at KETV.com generated more than 15,000 views last week and hundreds of responses from readers. The only other local TV sportscasters’ blog – by Dave Webber, Ross Jernstrom and Merlyn Klaus at WOWT.com – had received three responses for its past two blog posts this week.
“Last year the most (responses) we would receive was around 115 following a loss, and that was only if we plugged it during the Big Red Zone,” said Schick, who has written a blog (aka Web log) for the past 15 months.
“This year’s response has been much bigger. For instance, following the loss at Missouri we had 231 posts. Following the Oklahoma State game we had 300. Then roughly another 250 following the firing of Pederson and the hiring of Osborne.”
According to KETV.com Webmaster Shiloh Woolman, so far this October, Schick’s blog had 19,766 visits, compared to 2,082 visits in October of 2006.
“I can tell you that the hits go way up the worse it gets,” Schick said. “Unfortunately, if the Huskers stay in this valley for a while, fans will probably grow numb to the defeats and become less emotional about the losses.”

It's pretty unfortunate though that Matt has accomplished this by being so negative and downright insulting with regard to the overall program. It's pretty easy to generate a big response when you, for all intents and purposes, start the offensive ball rolling yourself. I consider Matt's blog to actually be a little less obnoxious than many of his on-air remarks.
Let's be honest. For a New York born, Colorado U educated, former Huskers hater to conjure up some vitriol for Nebraska is hardly a reach.
You need to be careful to not equate the response to his negativity as representative of any kind of journalistic integrity or quality.
Regards,
Yeah its easy to be popular when all you talk about is those dreadful Cornhuskers.
All those "fire so-and-so" websites are having a big boom right now as well.
Just for the records, what are his stats for mid-May when nothing related to Husker football is happening?
The only thing worse than John Anderson imitating Kenny Mayne's routine on ESPN, is Matt Schick imitating John Anderson imitating Kenny Mayne's routine on KETV.
I think everyone's web stats for the last 2 weeks have been way above normal from Huskers coverage.
I've seen some of the hundreds of comments on that blog. I was really impressed with the people calling each other a "d-bag".
Indeed, something to crow about.
Why don't you do a little research to back up your claim of "one of the most popular blogs in Omaha". Lets see the numbers you compared with Schick's to come up with that claim. You DID check other blog's numbers right?
Or didn't Shiloh spoon feed those to you?
No kidding, "6:35 p.m.,!!!" I know for a fact that Harold Andersen gets way more hits on his blog than "Schick's Shit." And if you want REAL blog action, there are ten times more blogs on wowt, way more than ketv. Every on air personality has a blog at wowt.com!
Regardless of Schick's alma mater, or his blog, he's the most talented sportscaster on any television station in the market. Bar none. And no, I don't work in TV, nor am I Matt Schick or any of his relatives. Just a fan of his work.
8:07, I'm guessing you love those ESPN anchors too?
"All-About-Me Matt" is an exact sportscenter replica! He'll even be a hottie once he reaches age 22!
John Anderson? LOL!
Honestly, I think the Schickster is Bristol bound someday! But he needs a more "original" schtick if you ask me.
Having ran into Matt in person, I can tell you that Matt has a high opinion of himself that rubs some people the wrong way including me. His "Schtick" does wear thin.
Glad you can judge someone so well just by "having ran into Matt in person". Matt is a VERY nice young Christian boy. (sorry Matt) He brings some fun and well executed humor into this sports market that isn't to be had from the boooor-ing Ch. 6 fellas and the Trav-ass Just-ass bitchfest over at Attack 3 News.
I agree that Matt Schick is trying way too hard to be an ESPN-wannabe.
And I think his on-air humor has a tendency to be pretty mean-spirited.
And I'm willing to bet the next time there's a huge crippling blizzard, the weather guys will start boasting, "Our weather website has had 2,000 visits a week!!"
I for one just turn the television off when Schick comes on. Sorry, can't stand the guy with his smug attitude and "high on himself" demeanor. He just irritates me. Thank god for the "off" and "mute" buttons on the remote!!! Give me the guys at six any day.
Jim, Give Matt credit for initiative and hustle and that he does a nice job on the air. But your comparison to Channel 6 Sports totally lacks context. Looking at their website it appears their first posts were last week. Now they may never come close to Matt in hits and comments but at this point your comparison is totally meaningless.
P.S. And quoting Shiloh's numbers really makes your story look like a KETV press release.
Matt is by far the best in Omaha. He has talent and will be working in Bristol someday. Bank on it. In the meantime, all of the kernals will be off of Webber's corn cob, JJ Davis will swearing at the RN at the nursing home for having green jello instead of red, Schutz will lose all of his hair and thus his gig and Travis will explode by eating one more jelly donut on the TnT show. Bank on that too.
6:12am - "Give me the guys at 6 anyday?"
You have got to be kidding me.
Either your last name is Webber or Jernstrom, or else you're also a fan of watching your grass grow in the middle of winter.
No emotion, no opinion, no passion... just read the sports and get on with it, right?
Wow.
You must have a fun home.
9:07 AM:
It's merely my opinion thank you very much. Just as you have yours. I like the six guys because they are hometown people. Schick is far too national for my tastes. Thus, I will continue to ban him from my television just as I am certain you will continue to watch him. Isn't it nice that we are all not the same? :)
I like Schick. He gets crap for being so young, but I think he's on the right track. Definitely enjoyable to watch. And no, I don't watch SportsCenter. I stopped that a looooong time ago.
Geez 9:07 - nice post. Matt is good and you have the right to sing his praises -- but the rest of the guys make their contributions and have found their own niche. Everybody has different tastes. I guess I missed the memo where yours is the only one that counts
i think matt's success compared to the success of the guys at six is kind of what's going on in this market... do we stick to the hometown feel that is nebraska, or lean toward the bigger city vibe that a lot of omahans reach for? it's interesting that km3's big market approach fails, while matt's doing well - how well I dont know, but obviously well. and so what if he looks like those guys on espn.... if any talent in town where anchoring like the talent on cnn, you wouldn't mock them for being copycats, you'd say they were doing a great job and are way better than this market.
10:36 How do you measure success? People responding to a blog? Last time I checked there was something called ratings. I agree with others, Matt does a nice job, he's young, talented and aggressive. Some people like him, some don't. He probably will move on to bigger things. But snarky and sarcastic may work better in Bristol than it does in midsize Midwest markets.
Perrault sucks...oh, sorry, wrong Matt. Carry on...
So let me get this straight. They didn't actually do a newscast this evening on KETV. Instead they broadcast Matt Schick relishing another Husker loss and they bring in some former player who, by the look of him, has done WAY too many drugs in his time.
I could only deal with it for about 30 seconds and I decided to switch to a rerun of 24.
Sorry, but again, it comes down to trust here folks. I trust the sports anchors over at Channel 6 more than I do at any other station in town. Matt is young and very talented, but having a college-kid look-alike who comes from Colorado telling me about the Huskers just doesn't cut it.
The folks over at the big six have been around for years. They know this city, the sports landscape and so much more. The fellas over at Channel 7 and Action 3 are very good, but they lack a lot of the trust which Channel 6 has worked hard to gain from many viewers over the years.
I watch all three channels, but I can tell you, boring at times as it may seem over at the big six, the folks there know what they're talking about, they get it, and they get it right!
Interesting that local newscasts used to simply inform you about news/sports/weather.
Now they seem to have to entertain, so the children don't get 'bored'.
7:45 AM:
Excellent points and I wholeheartedly agree. Six certainly has the Husker connection and that's what keeps people coming back.
The thing about Schick is how hard he works. As someone who's worked with him, I can tell you he has hustle. And he honestly does like living in Nebraska, even if he's from upstate NY and went to school at Colorado. He brings a different flavor than what we're used to, but what's wrong with that? So maybe he strikes some as more sarcastic than your typical Nebraskan. But he's got the work ethic and values we around here appreciate.
The thing about Schick is how much of a total creep he is.
You see. He's trying to be funny. Thats about as good as it gets with him.
By the way, way lower posting numbers the past couple weeks. Thats too bad. I doubt we'll see a story about that, though.
@ 9:32 AM ...
Jeez, don't act like someone strapped you into a chair, taped your eyes open and forced you to watch KETV and Matt Schick 24/7.
C'mon, now. You don't like it, change the freeking channel.
I'm sorry that you prefer your sportscasts from someone to fall asleep by.
You people are unbelievable.
Sounds like nothing but petty envy.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't he say in the OCW story that if the Huskers kept losing, people would "become less emotional about it?" Sounds like his prediction was accurate, considering the decrease in posts.
Go watch Travisham.
You see. I don't look at it as preferring to watch somebody who puts me to sleep. I look at it as preferring to watch somebody who doesn't base their success on negativity.
But, frankly, he is trumpeting his online success by targeting Nebraska Cornhusker failure, punctuated by snide remarks against some of the players themselves.
And I'm the petty one?
Just goes to show that if you are outrageous people will watch to be outraged. Use the off button. Or has CLOCKWORK ORANGE come of age...? I wonder...
Actually, Matt... all of the anonymous postings are me.
Sorry. It was Owen's idea.

"Trumpeting online success by targeting Nebraska failure?"
Any nimrod can figure out that the blog postings were up because of the Huskers' poor play. "The hits go way up the worse it gets" is a statement of fact... not a snide remark.
"Trumpeting"? Take off your rose-colored glasses and your jim rose-colored hearing aid.
Ahhh, Mr. Personality himself John Campbell chimes in.
Seriously, him and Matt Schick and Farah Fazal are well suited together on the weekend newscasts.
Travis Justice is the hardest working sportscaster out there and by far one of the best products we have in the Omaha area. This guy will hit it very big one day. Mark my words.
You think Travis Justice is the hardest working sportscaster? You must not know J.J. Davis.
I'm not a huge KPTM fan, but that guy runs his tail off every day.
Travis?
Sorry... didn't know he actually ever went to Husker news conferences.
Does he know how to get to Lincoln?
I think that 7:24's comments were twinged with just a bit of sarcasm.
3:29 PM, I think he can be seen in line at the press buffet in Memorial Stadium's pressbox most home games.
You can find Trav in the shadow of Matt Perrault's huge ego. Trust me, it is a large shadow.
Perrault is the next great radio sports jock. He's right up there with Jim Rome.
Say what you will...Travis Justice is by far and away one of the greatest sportscasters to hit the Omaha area. He was just the shakeup the stodgy old newscasts needed.
Matt Perrault is a godsend to Omaha. Thanks for the Big Show Matt! You are doing great! You are on the cusp of going huge!
Yet Perrault's ratings suck raw eggs on a hot summers day in the middle of Miami that have been sitting out for too long. They stink. The only thing huge on Perrault is his ego. He is the greatest of all time if you ask him. He is an unofficial member of MENSA too because he simply isn't wrong, ever. Again, just ask him. I mean, when he said Cosgrove was going to Minnesota (and he didn't sadly) that wasn't Perrault's fault, it was Cosgrove's because Perrault is never wrong.
This isn't negativity I'm hearing is it??
Perrault is not the next "Rome." Actually, he attempts to be too much like Rome.
Like when Perrault says "stay close" heading into every break. Or when he once spoke of how "bowling isn't a sport, because anything you get better at the more you drink is not a sport."
He obviously grew up on Rome, and sounds a little too much like him. If there was a bigger time gap between his show and Rome's it'd be somewhat acceptable... but it's back-to-back.
Perrault's show is decent, though.
Geez; apparently even those that hate him are listening to him. They seem to know so much about what he says.
Could we please stay on topic...? Please...! For god's sake people this is an entry about Matt Schick; a young man that is doing a tremendous job and undoubtedly we will see him on the national level one day. Let's get the comments back to him and save the Perrault bashing for another entry pertaining more to him.
And, in other news from the alternate universe: The Ross Perot Presidential Library is scheduled to open on Friday, Bill Callahan dismissed speculation that his Cornhuskers are poised to win their 4th straight national championship, MySpace.com is set to be dismantled due to lack of interest, and Senator Rosie O'Donnell continued to criticize Anne Coulter's attempts to legalize same-sex marriage.
1:21pm
You're right... I was out of line.
Me like Matt Schick.
Sorry, I too was out of line. I like Schick's schtick. God, that sounds dirty.
Amazing how many comments are generated by Shiloh's feeding JM a nice press release for a little pub for Matt.
Well, anyway, we've talked about him for over a week now - seems to have worked!
I think Matt brings style to sports. He is refreshing and fun to watch. Sports can be really dry, but Matt puts a spin on it and keeps you wondering about what he'll say next. It's sports news with a kick.
Well done, Matt! Keep up the great work. :-)
