Gottschalk Steps Down as World-Herald Publisher

Omaha World-Herald publisher John Gottschalk, 64, is stepping down as of Jan. 1, according to a report in the paper. The World-Herald made the announcement Friday morning.

Replacing Gottschalk will be Terry Kroeger, the company’s president who has been groomed for the position for the past several years.

Kroeger, 45, joined the World-Herald company in 1985. He became the publisher of the World-Herald-owned Stockton (Calif.) Register in 1994.

The move will end Gottschalk’s 18 years as publisher of the World-Herald and chief executive of the newspaper’s parent company. According to the World-Herald, Gottschalk will remain chairman of the Omaha World-Herald Company.

no one cares. yet they still put it at the top of the paper... twice.
how arrogant.

People do care! Not much gets done in Omaha with out Gottschalk's finger prints on it.

Another homage to the fat, bloated, bourgeoisie in Omaha society.

Who gives a crap about these people. They print stories about everyone and everything, but can't print a story about Todd and Tyler being the #1 radio show in town. They've raised countless thousands of dollars in the past for various scholls and not one word of this gets printed. Screw the paper and all who run it.

Todd and Tyler are dicks. Old, bitter, but somehow manage to sound like twenty-something losers living in their parents basement, bitching about their dad making them clean their room. Their station is not the only media entity to give scholarship money and many of those don't pander to the lowest common denominator like those two self-important old hags.

Yet they are number one for a reason, aren't they? Nuff said.

>>Yet they are number one for a reason, aren't they? Nuff said.

Sure brainiac, that's why anyone with more than a couple bucks and mcdonald's coupons in their pocket has bought an ipod or satellite receiver. Number one, yea right, people are leaving in droves.

It doesn't really matter if people are moving to other forms of media if the numbers are still up and TnT are still showing no signs of slowing down. Why are you so bitter? You don't have to listen to them you know. Or perhaps you are just happy being outraged about something...? Sad.

--It doesn't really matter if people are moving to other forms of media--

That's what the radio sales folks would like you to think, but if ad rates were based on measurements taken from listenership of the entire population as opposed to touting measurements gleaned from the dwindling numbers of people who still listen to local radio, are in particular age group, sex, ethnicity, etc. I think radio station gms would have giant beads of sweat rolling down their foreheads.

Anonymous said...

Really...why are you so bitter?

probably spent money to advertise something besides beer bongs on tnt.

This message is for the idiot who called Todd and Tyler dicks.

Why do you say Todd and Tyler are dicks? Is that because you yourself are a dick and know what to look for? There's more to life than video games and the Sears catalog.

Since you haven't made a valid point yet let me help.
1. Todd and Tyler are #1 and have been for years, and will remain there for many years to come.
2. Their listeners consist of people from all ethnic groups regardless of age or religion. Anyone with half a brain who listens to the show could tell you this.
3. As far as their age is concerned what the hell does this have to do with anything? Age has no bearing on how well a radio show performs. What determines how well a radio show does is the likeability and personalities of the radio DJ's.
4. Todd and Tyler have raised thousands of dollars in the past for various schools and not one word of this gets published in this rag of a paper.
5. You mentioned that people were leaving in droves. What does this mean? They're deciding to quit listening to the radio and listen to iPod's or did you mean people are leaving Omaha? Either way your wrong. TNT's ratings are still strong and growing. In case you haven't heard it's now called THE EMPIRE idiot. And if you haven't been west of 180th or North of Maple for a while you'll find several thousand new homes.
6. As someone mentioned previously they are number one for a reason, aren't they? You still have no logical explanation as to why you don't understand this.

If you don't like what's being said don't listen to the show.

That is excellent! I couldn't have said it better myself. Also; don't forget that differing levels of society listen to TnT from Blue Collar to White Collar. It's one thing many of us have in common. Obviously some of these people just listen because they like to be outraged about something. There is an off button, or you could switch stations.

TnT empire rules!!!

The Empire Rocks !

Been a fan of the show since they signed on in 1993. How many other morning shows in Omaha have lasted that long ? The numbers are there for advertisers to see for themselves. I'm sure some of the negative posts regarding Todd & Tyler are in radio in some shape or form . Sales/Programming. I will continue to listen to TNT . You can listen traffic & weather on the 10's along with Pyschic Suzy at 7:10 !

Wow! What an empire for T and T! Omaha, Springfield, MO and Witchita, KS. Wow!

Sounds like a few fanboys/girls along with a few others who bought the "enjoy a career in radio, you'll be famous" line have their panties in a wad.

Tnt are dicks does sound like he's been on the wrong end of the radio world and is bitter for it but-

All forms of media are in for a big change in the coming years. People want what they want, when they want it and they are moving to ipods, the internet and satellite because corporate has overloaded on the ad content and shifted formats all over the place looking for a short term fix for a long term problem. I would say most people couldn't even tell you what fm station they are on at any given time these days, they just hit buttons till they hear something besides jocks laughing at their own jokes or ad blocks so long that it's all that is heard on the drive to work. After a while they just flip on the ipod in disgust.

Print is the first to take a big hit because their numbers are based on a fixed accounting method. TV and radio aren't far behind but will take a little longer because their numbers are based on polling as opposed to numbers of actual subscribers. They can scramble all they want, call themselves empires because of syndication (which only means corporate covers more markets with less on-air talent), have a dancing fat guy (cute for the first five seconds, gross after that) or switch formats every other week, but in the end, technology is great for consumers, allowing them to vote with their feet and very troubling for the big corporate media.

6:22pm - I agree! Also - along with ipods, the internet, and satellite many people can get ad-free music stations on their cell phones (as long as they have a data plan). Just plug your phone into your car's MP3 jack and away you go...

For example: http://www.nextel.com/en/services/power_vision/music.shtml?id12=CHP_ServicesTab_Link_Music

I've been a long time listener to TnT and I can tell you that though the ad breaks run long; they are few and far between. Also; the numbers of listeners to TnT have been increasing. iPod all you want, but the proof is in the numbers. These guys have the corner on the Omaha radio market whether you like it or not.

Why are you so bitter about it? Why do you feel a need to comment on it? You can listen to your iPod you know?

This series of posts is quite amusing. I, for one, am not a TnT fan. I don't care for their brand of radio. Do I disparage them...? No. Why? Because there are different strokes for different folks. Because I don't want to listen to them; I don't. I switch to NPR, which is more of my taste.

I guess the point that I am trying to make is; why not just switch your radio or whatever to something you enjoy. It'll soothe your nerves a bit. To attack something that you do not like, but can do nothing about is just petty. C'mon...use your power of free will...or are you automatons forced against your will to listen?

Doesn't matter how you paint it...TnT are number one baby!!!!!!!!!!!! Deal with it!!!!

Anonymous said...

How did we get six degrees of separation from John Gottschalk to Todd and Tyler. Oh right...the World-Herald is firmly in the corner of TnT...

Anonymous said...

prbly still thinks that mullet is lookin fine....

Apparently there are a lot of people with mullets out there according to the latest ratings book. Are you one of them? You know you don't have to be ashamed to admit that you actually like TnT.

Anonymous said...

any actual radio people out there willing to share real numbers? Out of the 1.2 million or so metro area residents, how many actually tune into TnT or any of the local radio stations? I'm not talking an estimate, it would be refreshing to see real, non-spinable numbers instead of unsubstantiated claims by pr folk.
Hey, that's an idea for sean and jim. A report card on the actual, real, honest-to-goodness health of all the local media.....

Anonymous said...

5:37 PM.....Why do you hate the World Herald??? Jim Minge learned all of his journalistic expertise while employed there you know....

OWH rocks man!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Right on bro. The OWH has ruled this market for years man. How many other newspapers can say that in Omaha????

The Great OWH Empire is AWESOME!!!!

(now back to our regularly scheduled TnT lovefest.....)

Anonymous said...

Huh, got real quiet in here. I know there are radio folk following this. Too many of the responses sounded like lines from the station's ad sales flip books. Real numbers must be scary. Could it be that all the carefully qualified claims of "we're #1" are really a bunch of #2 ?

Anonymous said...

Roll it however you want. Everything points to TnT being number one in the morning whether you like it or not. Perhaps if you would stop listening that would change. A few of you that are so outraged by TnT remind of the preachers that condemn homosexuality, but then stand revealed as one. You seem to really know what is going on in the TnT empire to be so outraged about it; therefore it stands to reason that you apparently listen to them from time to time. Hypocrites.

Anonymous said...

To put it in the TnT vernacular, "We're like those big, pink, heavily veined, rubber testicles hanging off the bumpers of our listeners trucks. We get your attention with shock value, were a little funny 10 years ago but are now just gross and probably covering for shortcomings in other areas, in this case real numbers." ----insert phlegm-soaked-laugh-at my-own-joke-too-long-too-fill-airtime-because-I-really-hate-my-job-and-the-few-that-still-listen here----

Anonymous said...

Yet they are still number one, aren't they? And youmust be regular listener to know so much about what they speak of. TnT rule!!!!!

Anonymous said...

To 6:21 AM and 8:13 AM: Thanks for posting, Todd and Tyler!

Anonymous said...

No problem. TnT

Anonymous said...

It just amazes me how many people hate Todd and Tyler. It would be interesting to know what they consider good radio. Bob and Tom? Not hardly. If you prefer NPR or your iPod that's great, but don't criticize their morning show if you are only a casual listener. I've been listening to their show since they came to town and can only think of 2 things that I did not like being said. While I don't agree with everything people say on the show, I don't agree with things my own family and friends say. That only proves that we all have a difference of opinion on many issues and topics. I have been a fan of the show and will continue to be a fan for as long as they are in town.

Keep it up Journal employees...if you keep sucking up in defense of your Journal bosses - TnT - you'll stay on their good side and keep your jobs. Just ask Travis!!!

Anonymous said...

To 8:12 PM: Thanks for posting, Travis Justice!

Good for all of you that have "been listening to them since they have been on the air in Omaha". I stopped listening because they are so egotistical. They actually took credit for the Qwest Center being built!

And if, heaven forbid, someone actually called in to disagree with them on something they'd say "Yeah Thanks for calling" and just hang up on them.

So yeah, you all just keep listening to their sophomoric brand of humor, I'll pass!

Here's a little radio math-- Ten people in are in a room. Five of them still listen to local fm radio and five have moved to ipod, satellite or am talk. Two of the five who still listen to local fm radio sometimes listen to TnT. in radioland they call that 40 percent listenership because they don't bother counting the first 50 percent of the room who they've chased away.
TnT ROCKS!!!...... allthoseloserswhohaven'tleftlocalfmradioalready.

TnT are still on in Omaha? What station? I haven't heard from them in years...right around the time they stopped being relevant.

Please....there is a thing called a scroll bar to help you not read the comments that you don't like.

Anonymous said...

If no one complained it would never get any better. The radio sales reps certainly aren't going to tell you how much TNT are disliked and how bad listenership really is overall. They've got clients to fool. still haven't seen any radio folk step up with real numbers, but apparently they do like the term "bitter".

Anonymous said...

those of you who claim to have listened to T and T all 14 years...HOW OLD ARE YOU?

Does anybody see the irony of it all here...T and T make their living off making fun of and ridiculing others, but when people actually express dislike *GASP!* for them on a blog, some of their listeners' undies get in a bunch!

Anonymous said...

5:12 PM:

So you don't like them...then why are you listening to them? Obviously you must be to be able to make any type of an informed comment about them. And no...I don't listen to TnT. I haven't in some time, as they are not my cup of tea. But I don't feel the need to berate them. Just ignore them and maybe they will go away. It's not going to do you any good to keep bashing them. It will just make people want to listen more. Turn the dial man and listen to NPR...it'll broaden your horizons and lower your blood pressure.

Anonymous said...

12:35 PM: Who said I listen to them...I am just assuming, I haven't listened to them in about 8 years. And who is berating them?

Anonymous said...

November 7, 2007 2:52 PM.....Just the kind of comment I would expect from a TnT listener. Stay classy!

Neil:

Then how can you make any type of informed opinion if you haven't listened to them in eight years? Perhaps things have changed. Probably not...but perhaps.
