KXVO Pulls Plug On 10 p.m. Newscast

The "KXVO 10:00 News" will air its final live edition next Thursday, KPTM/KXVO News Director Joe Radske said Thursday morning.

"The program was an incredible program," Radske said. "Unfortunately, it didn’t reach enough people."

The unconventional newscast made its debut in December of 2005 with Calvert Collins as host. She was later moved to a reporting role when former MTV VJ Brian McFayden came on board in April. McFayden was let go in June and eventually replaced by current host Matt Geiler.

KPTM Director of Promotions Sam Lawson said for the short term, the newscast will be replaced by reruns of "King of the Hill."

After seeing Sean's reply to another comment in the last post and then reading this entry...all I can say is, wow - what a difference four hours can make!

Under the definition of lame management you will see the picture of Randy Oswald.

We changed our lives around to fulfill the mission of producing KXVO's "newscast", and delivered, only to be dumped by the idiot in the corner office.

"Didn't reach enough viewers" - we weren't on long enough to change the landslide of viewership that was already owned by the big three other "real" newscasts. And knowing that, why WAS 10:00 the chosen time? Was this all an experiment in order to f#@$$ with the lives of those of us who poured our heart and soul into KXVO.

To the management I say you can all be damned. ...especially you, Randy.

Why stop with the 10 O'clock news? I wish they'd drop the 9:00 news on KPTM just to put an end to all those rediculous promos during American Idol.

"King of the Hill"? Yeah, now THAT I will watch!

Matt and crew will be missed!!!

10:03 AM As a person that worked under the rule of "King" Randy years ago and went through pretty much the same thing at the Big Six, I underatand the anger and frustration. The man is known far and wide for being absolutely heartless in the way he does things. He has no conscience whatsoever and no remorse. The only thing I am curious about, and perhaps you can answer, did he take a couple of days off to be out of the building when the announcement was made to the employees? That was a favorite trcik of his at WOWT. When he wanted someone fired, he'd quickly take time off to be out of the office and let his "elves" do the dirty work. Talk about paranoia. Sheesh.

Anonymous said...

It's sad to see the show end. I'm surprised it lasted this long to be honest. The suits upstairs claim they didn't know how to sell the show. Hoveround? That's selling to the key demos! Great Job guys!!! KXVO will be missed.

Come to think of it, Randy Oswald is a real a-hole. I understand there's a change of guard coming soon. It can't come soon enough. Good riddance to the scowling skull!

Last time I checked, it takes years, not months to build an audience.

Matt, Taylor, Jeff and Kyle deserved more than 2 ratings books. Look at KPTM's news in gereral. How long has it been on the air, 8-9 years?, its just NOW starting to make moves in the ratings. Money Spent + Patience = Ratings, not a carousel of anchor changes, not a "live, local latebreaking" news mantra, not decrepid anchors reading wire copy...those things turn viewers off. KXVO was innovative and fun. Good TV, plain and simple...and I'm going to miss it. Good luck fellas!

Anonymous said...

I think most of us can agree, KXVO was a good 'idea'. The problem was is was never executed correctly.

From the first idea of a KXVO show to air was only six weeks. The cast and crew had no time, money or planning, thus, it was doomed to fail. Disaster may be too harsh, but the suits set them up to fail. I know for a fact that everyone (except McFayden) worked their tails off for that show, but they never had a fair chance. Typical of Pappas products, they get nothing and end up becoming nothing...

Anonymous said...

That show seriously sucked. Not one person will miss it.

Anonymous said...

Well, except for the 150 people who showed up for the live broadcast a month ago...or the people who contributed to the 20,000 hits on the YouTube site..The audience aren't the kind who get Nielsen diaries.

The outdated measuring system for success rewards real crap, like WOWT's product.

Anonymous said...

Frankly, I liked the station a lot better before they tried adding a news presence, back in the WB days.

Anonymous said...

I also think a simple tweak (or two of three) would've put KXVO on the right track.

Like, do away with the word "news". Format the show with an edge similar to "The Daily Show" - only localize it. Have Matt styled in casual clothes (why WAS he wearing a suit?). Get rid of weather.

I think this town is ready for a "hip" PM magazine show, unfortunately, the managers decided to pull the plug on a local program that had promise.

Sorry guys.

It's Good Day all over again! This should not shock anyone. I will agree that word news should have never been used for this show.

Matt isn't that funny, I mean he can't even work the Funny Bone. His style of comedy appeals to very few like that gay guy Marv on Q-98. Plus he hurt himself by letting the support staff on the air. This isn't the Daily Show as much as it was Westside TV. But hey, when you get a shoe string budget and bad management this is what happens. Good effort, in a different time and place and a lot more TV experience this would have worked.

Anonymous said...

I heard Matt Perrault will be looking for work soon. Maybe he could host a 10pm show?

Anonymous said...

I think Matt is one of the most funny, creative and talented people I have met... as well as Stein and Kyle. I loved those guys and will miss that show (even if I was watching the Daily Show at that time instead.) That show could've survived if it was in a different time slot, the admin gave a crap about it and Pappas invested anything into it (as well at KPTM.) As someone who's worked there in the past, it always pissed me off at the amount of hard work people put in there, and they were rewarded with crappy pay and crappy equipment.

Anonymous said...

"Pappas"?? More like Crappas. I agree with previous posters who said that this type of show had potential. An irreverent entertainment/news show directed toward younger viewers in Omaha is a great idea. For those who say it was not executed well enough, consider this: you are given a cardboard set and a green-painted wall, no direction or feedback, a team of four people, and bad pay. I think Matt and friends did a great job in coming up with their original sketch ideas, something that is much harder to do than you think. They did what they could with it, much more than anyone else was willing to do. There was not and never was enough backing for the show to let it succeed.

Anonymous said...

this is major bull. the program never had a chance to gain an audience and was not given the basic resources to make the ratings. This is an major dispoinment and a return to the dark ages of omaha media. no wonder it was not making money the first anchor who was good was demoted the second one made national news for being fired and the third one had a very poor set and out dated WB 15 logo. the cw is getting bad ratings anyways compared to the wb and upn. what ever the reason it is an shame

Anonymous said...

what happened to the professional graphics and music that calvert collins had. the problem was that the hosting was not professional enough and some of the sikts where quite tasteless. many times when the other stations were doing serious and very important stories kxvo had silly skits. i think they did this themselfs.

Anonymous said...

get real kptm should just do the right thing and do a five or morning news cast. mabey even get that new fox morning show in omaha!

Anonymous said...

their is another show like this now. its on wowts 620 like once a week. kxvo is having an image problem since it switched to the cw. every show is getting worse ratings then last year almost all of the shows are running out of good episodes. smallville, one tree hill, americas top model are geting tired. reba was cancled. seventh heaven is cancelled again. the new reality show which i wont mention is getting alot of critism. so it is not just the kxvo news that is failing with ratings on the cw the entire network is!!!!

Anonymous said...

I think it needs to be pointed out that McFayden was the first to introduce sketch comedy-style bits to the show, making it perhaps the first local TV show to use this format. Before that, it was just the news read by Calvert Collins with more of an "arts and culture" slant. Brian incorporated everyone in the building into the show and really broke through some of the pretensions of omaha tv news. He had a big vision for the show, way too big for the station to accept. He was, contrary to popular belief, very dedicated to the show, passionate about his hometown, and wanted to elevate it to the next level.

Anonymous said...

To the two "Brians" who simultaniously posted:

McFayden, you're right. You completely innovated everything the "modern day" KXVO is today. But the news guys add their own ingredients and style - was it better, who knows. By the way, how you doing?

Stick, you're right to! 620 is incredibly bad. Put a gun to my head if ever it appears on tv while I'm channel surfing again. And yes, Matt's a talented guy.

3 words......
cable access quality

If these folks are too sophisticated for Omaha 'news', I'm sure they'll have no problems marketing their craft to larger markets. Just be sure to mention you'll guarantee 150 viewers a night!
I guess this just shows that not everyone that "graduates" from Chicago's branch of SCTV is successful in attempting comedy. I Cox Channel 18 awaits!!!

"Brian incorporated everyone in the building into the show and really broke through some of the pretensions of omaha tv news."

Yeah, Brian incorporated everyone in the building - by making fun of them!

1. He had a straight kid act gay b/c he knew the kid was dying to be on tv.
2. He made his news director look like an idiot (although that wasn't any a difficult task)
3. He made a teenage girl look as though she enjoyed child pornography.

... the list could go on, but what's the point?

Sure Brian - or should I say Buda - running through sprinklers on a hot day and hanging out with 14 and 15 year old "models" REALLY changed the landscape of omaha tv news.

Anonymous said...

McFayden was a jerk to everyone he worked with. That's why the day after he had a screaming match with the producer, he was fired from the worst station in Omaha. Thats also why he failed nationally. His downward spiral is his own fault.

Anonymous said...

Was it really not getting the ratings, or did upper management (read: HHS) forget to read the page that read "salaries" when they did next year's budget (a la "Good Day")? Yet another dark day at 46th and Farnam and through no fault of those that worked hard to put something unique on the air. Good luck in the future to the entire crew from someone who can empathize.

Anonymous said...

here it is, plain and simple. as a former employee of the trash can at 46th and farnam, it can be said without a doubt, pappas is about the bottom line...period. management spends their time in meetings trying to figure out how to cut corners, solve problems and find out who is to blame without ever stepping foot into the newsroom for weeks at a time to ever see what the REAL employees go through on a daily basis.

pappas put all their money into a jackass from mtv with the hopes his "popularity" would do all the work for them and when complaint after complaint came in regarding his antics and treatment of fellow employees, nothing was ever done until someone higher up on the pappas tv food chain was insulted.

how nice of you pappas! way to fatten your pockets and empty the ones of those who actually lived, ate, slept and breathed life into that show...it was going somewhere and once again, you were hoping for an easy fix and once again, you miscalulated.

Furthermore, if the King chooses not to show up, and maintain his personal record of 15 consecutive years away from 46th and Farnam, all employees are here-by ordered to the transmitter site where you will be forced to listen to 15 hours of "Thoughts of the Day" by Randy Oswald.

you can tell that to mr. harry pappas, sir! people on this rotten blog don't give 42 the time of day...it's 3, 6, 7, and those other guys. well, take notice: the guys from the UHF station with one arm tied behind their backs just took down a station that was much, much better off.

Yea, that's why I watch the news-for the 'sketch comedy'part.

Anonymous said...

kxvo wasn't supposed to be a normal newscast. we already have the other guys for that. it was supposed to be more of a variety show than hard news (music, entertainment, etc.) duh.

Michael Carnes said...

I think "duh" is a pretty dead-on assessment of the intelligence level of the program, to say nothing of the audience it was catering to.

Anonymous said...

Re beating channel third: Not to discredit the hard working people in the 42 newsroom, but they are woefully too understaffed and underpaid to make a difference without the huge lead-ins of "24" and "American Idol".

Anonymous said...

Then how do you explain the fact that A-I ends at 8:00... leaving an hour for viewers to tune off?

Anonymous said...

Maybe their ratings are up because Lea, Hong, Molai, Giles, Patterson, Mueller, and Wilson rock it proper. And 3 is full of tools.

Michael Carnes said...

It can't be because of their Saturday night team - the weather guy and the news guy (names don't know) are blabbering like high school girls about being Bob Barker's replacement on The Price Is Right. These guys are coming ver-r-r-r-r-r-y close to making that KXVO garbage look somewhat intelligently palatable...which I didn't think was possible until tonight.

Anonymous said...

Giles...are you kidding me?!!!

Anonymous said...

Can anyone tell me what the ratings numbers are?

No one at KPTM complained when Harry chose to visit the transmitter over us. Also, no one at Fox wants to meet him because apparently he's been known to walk through news rooms and fire people on the spot if he doesn't like the way they look. He's an ass-backwards old coot with no integrity who is living in a fantasy world.

kxvo and kptm need to be sold and run by 2 different companies who can handel the amount of investement that is needed to run a station. Breaking news, all of the azteca america stations are now being droped off by pappas in nebraska its about 7 low power statons bc of no $$$. the 2 abc stations and 2 fox stations for hastings kearney are run through pappas and even the cw for the l-h-k market. now the fox station is looking for an on air host whatever that means. how is it that pappas is not breaking ownership rules. and if the ratings are that bad for the omaha cluster i can not imagine what the lincoln ones are. the employes must work hard but the budgets must be a shoe string. Even more kptm also handles the my tv network channel which in theory could be an entire new station in omaha on their digitalsub but dont even advertise it because of the load of kxvo. and kxvo has an online radio station which could be on FM but that would take $$ and affect ownership gaps.

in all pappas controls/runs in nebraska:

kptm and mytv omaha

cwtv omaha

about 7 azteca america low power tv stations that have now gone under due to poor profit

2 large western nebraska abc stations plus whatever is on digital sub channels

2 lincoln/western nebraska fox stations plus digital sub channel possibity

the lincoln cw channel

Anonymous said...

kxvo was alot better when it was the wb. i have a hard time watching it now its not the same.
in kansas city the fox station is fully programed with news all most as much if not more than the big three networks. if kptm has been behind for the twenty years it has been on the air does anyone really belive that kxvo with the same ownership can do any better. the fact that kptm beat action news does not show very much because kptm only puts out one news cast a day. viewers skip around on differnt stations to get more news ie 5 am, 11.30 am 12 pm 4 pm 5 pm 6 pm 9 pm and 10 pm news.

To answer an above question, KXVO is technically "owned" by Mitts Broadcasting Company and operated by Pappas under a time brokerage agreement. Basically, Mitts Broadcasting is made up of three people (I think) who own the station for Harry Pappas so he doesn't break FCC rules. It used to be Cocola Broadcasting-- Cocola was the guy who Harry shared a jet with, and again it was a personal favor for Harry Pappas.

I agree with the poster who said that Pappas doesn't invest much in equipment or talent, but I don't get how those things could have improved KXVO's "news"/sketch comedy show. At least when KXVO focused their image on the WB/CW, they could hitch their wagon to the network (which admittedly was more impressive back in the WB's heyday in 1999-2001). That "news" show makes it look like the station is run by four guys who spend all day making comedy skits. In my eyes it tarnished the image of a station that didn't have much going for it to begin with.

Actually 4:29, the ratings show 42 beating 6 in some of the key demos as well. The only reason that 6 has overall numbers near the top is that the elderly crowd solidly watch them. That doesn't make the future over there look very bright.

Fox 42 has the best, wittiest, and most personable, down to earth on-air talent in Omaha. Lemme tell you something, to work for Pappas you need to have a great sense of humor. Taylor and Amanda are now the best anchor team in the city, and they have some great up-and-coming reporters.

"Lemme" tell YOU something, Laura. To work at Pappas you need a lobotomy (please see above reasons).

Fox 42 news has come a long way since its beginnings in 1990. They have by far the best local sports coverage of any of the stations in town and do it with far fewer people. Way to go JJ and Jeff. You guys are great!

Anonymous said...

I have to admit, the show caught my attention only after Brian Mc’MTV started hosting it, but that was only because I was trying to remember where I knew him from… then I realized it was MTV… I watched the show every once and a blue moon.. I didn’t tune in for news, I tuned in for the entertainment of the show.. the so stupid it is funny bits.. if I want to watch the news, I turn to 7, 6, 3, & 42 if I’m around at 9pm.

I think the show would have done better in a bigger market honestly.. I know some people don’t like to admit it, but Omaha is behind a few years of the new, hip, cool stuff that happens in the states.. Somewhere in the west this show might have gained some popularity.. say Phoenix, San Diego, or Vegas maybe.. but you do need to make the shows set, graphics, etc look cool to get viewers attention. Eye candy is BIG! That is also where 42 sucks.. there news just doesn’t pop out at you! Everything is just dull.. I do like the talent at 42, well, Taylor is a little odd at times.. but they got potential for sticking around!

And I hope Big Sports 590’s Matt P is out. He is a freaking TOOL!

They ahve got to be the hardest working sports guys in this city. Great job guys. Keep it up!

I have never met a nicer set of guys. They work harder than most and as everyone knows...comedy is harder than any other from of television.

They tried to include and compliment EVERYONE involved in their show.

I doubt I will ever be a part of a more entertaining production…everyday was different and I looked forward to it.

I think that though their audience was “apparently” small, it was strong. I know several people in other parts of the country who watch their stuff on You Tube. They turned out for events and they formed groups on Myspace and Facebook.

If I could say anything to those guys, I would say know you were loved and you will be missed. Good luck in the future…your talent will lead you to bigger and better things.

Simply, 42 needs to become a true FOX station.

Go anywhere else in the U.S. and tune into a FOX station and they are light years ahead of 42. Logos, TV news, everything is much better at the other FOX stations.

42 makes that TV station in the movie UHF look like a L.A. or NY market station.

Another thing - why is 42's picture always darker compared to the other stations in town. Someone go out back of 42's station building and get those hamsters to run a little faster.

42 - you could do so much better but choose not to.

It's a shame that the KXVO "News" couldn't reach enough people. Working on the KPTM side of things I can say Geiler, Stein, Beneke and Van Roy made coming to work enjoyable. The crew brought so much energy to the station. I have to give Pappas props for giving a program like this a chance. It all started as a way to get political ad money. No one thought the show would last this long. It took the show awhile to find its identity but that came too late. Best of Luck Guys!
