From The Notebook

Even though he has changed schools, former University of Nebraska-Lincoln Athletic Director Steve Pederson still refers to himself in first person plural:

"We are thrilled to be back in Pittsburgh," Pederson said at his introduction Friday as Pittsburgh's new athletic director. "Leaving here five years ago was the hardest professional decision we had ever made. Coming back was the easiest decision we had ever made."

One reporter for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review called Pederson the "good-luck charm" for the Panthers' upset of West Virginia Saturday night.

"New athletic director Steve Pederson -- is he a good-luck charm, or what? -- was standing on the sidelines for WVU's final, heart-stopping play, a 4th-and-17 from the Pitt 28 as the clock ticked down," wrote Joe Starkey.

KOZN (1620 AM) "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" co-host Kevin Kugler said the hiring of Bo Pelini as Nebraska head football coach is another step toward cutting ties with recruiting services like Rivals.com.

"You first saw that in Tom Osborne's press conference when he was introduced as interim athletic director," Kugler said. "He puts no stock in these recruiting services and neither does Bo. That was something from the previous regime."

Locally, Rivals.com (also known as "HuskersIllustrated.com) reporter Sean Callahan files reports for several news outlets, including WOWT-6, KOLN/KGIN in Lincoln and KFAB.

KPTM-42 Sports Director J.J. Davis cracked up the press corps and much of the audience at Sunday's press conference when he asked Pelini if he felt like "the man" after getting the job.

I for one am glad to see us get away from the "rivals.com" crowd. It's over blown, plus I'll be glad not to have the "Big Red Insider" (SC) professing to know everything.

Hopefully Bo and Coach Osborne will move him out and off the NU broadcasts.

Sean, Kugler is the BIGGEST hypocrite around since he had Sean on 1620 for a long time and has done a segment with him on ETV. Now that Sean moved on to KFAB he doesn't know anything? Well Kevin helped feed our ignorance for years then. Bunch of crap. These petty little battles that he and Severe wage with Big Sports 590, Jim Rose, Steve Pederson, etc. really detract from the fact that he is a talented play by play guy.

And another thing --recruiting rating services have been around for a long time. Coaches have never put of stock in them, they exist for fans -- but their recruiting coordinators all call them and local newspapers (who are also hypocrites) to tip them off when a kid commits-- and they will probably keep doing so under Bo Pelini.

And a whole new era of ass-kissing begins. Who will be the first in line to press their lips to Pelini's behind and smooch? Who will do it most frequently? Stay tuned!

Where the heck in Kugler's comments does he say Sean, or Rivals for that matter, doesn't know anything? All he said is that neither Osborne nor Pelini put much stock in recruiting services. And that makes Kugler a hypocrite?

Anonymous said...

Clarification-- Davis didn't ask "if he felt like 'the man' after getting the job". Davis asked if Pelini felt he needed to be a little bit cooler and reserved now that he was "the man".

Good. I feel sorry for people who pay for subscriptions to recruiting insider services. You're paying these idiots to follow high school kids around for a living, isn't that just a little weird?

Anonymous said...

That Calvin Kugler is a bonifide trouble-maker.

He hates the Huskers, hates Jim Rose, hates Steve Pederson, hates Sean Callahan, hates his family.....

And One time at band camp...he hit me....

Sean is such an ass kisser. The less I hear about him the better. Every time I see him on 10/11 or Big Red Wrap Up I just want to shoot myself. He's the typical "I didn't play in high school, but I can sure report it" wannabe.

So now we are hating on Sean Callahan? What a spiteful little burg Omaha is. By the way about the hypocrisy of Kevin -- ask yourself if he would be making those publc assessments about Rivals.com if Sean was still part of his coverage team? That's why it is hypocritical.

Kevin Kugler is a pathetic, two faced jackass. He LOVED Sean Callahan when SC was on 1620. He promoted the HELL out of SC when he was on 1620...called him the ultimate Husker insider with all of the facts.

Now that the guy is on with somebody else, little Kevin can't stop belittling the denigrating the guy.

Who does he have pictures of to get that national gig? He is so small-town it's amazing.

Rivals and HI probably have more folks on-line in a day than KK has listening in a week.

You can always tell why somebody is ripping somebody else....because that somebody ELSE is kicking the somebody's rear end.

Sorry KK, you've been outed. We know your playbook.

Wow, the jealousy in this group of bloggers is shocking.

Kugler must not be TOO small town because not only did he get the national gig, he's kept it.

4:45, you're obviously better than Kugler at everything he does. Send a tape to 1620 and his national gig and shove him out the door! We could use some talent on the air in Omaha.

Kugler is so far and away better than any other sports commentator in Omaha radio that it's barely worth discussing.

Kugler's worst day blows Perrault's best 24/7/365. Anybody with a whit of true knowledge of the medium knows it...anybody who thinks Perrault is even in Kugler's neighborhood is a freakin' moron.

Look, the recruiting stuff is for the fans. We love it! How much of it turns out? Who cares...it's the age old American ideal of beating everybody in order to get to #1. It's perfect if you need an off-season football fix.

Lighten up.

Anonymous 6:49....aka KK

Anonymous 6:27 AM Dec 3rd was not written by KK. It was written by someone who worked in Omaha radio for 20 years (but has been out of it for 5 years now) and I did not work at either KFAB or KOZN, instead working at a rather relaxing station.

I'm not an insider nor do I claim to be. I just don't care for the so called "big red insider" junk. Why can't we just sit back and enjoy the games and see what happens?

I know SC very well, and I can honestly say he is one of the nicer and more hard working people I have ever met in my life. How can you knock the guy, look what he's accomplished already and he's not even close to 30. Apparently some people must think he's pretty good, otherwise he wouldn't be holding more jobs than all of us combined.

As for KK, I know for a fact him and Sean are still cool. Their relationship is not what it once was, but they still get along and talk professionally. It's nothing like the Rose-Kugler battle where they haven't spoken in years. I think you people on here are making way too big of a deal out of this.

Fellas. Let's stop all the fussing and fuding and get down to the nitty gritty. Why are there no hot female sports casters in this town....or even not so hot ones? Imagine how much better coverage of the Huskers, Jays, Mavs, etc. would be if you threw a Hooters girl with a degree in broadcasting in the mix.

Anonymous said...

Hot sports girl......I chose Bredow

Anonymous said...

Bredow on sports...."The Jays played a pretty DESHENT game last night"

While we're talking sports talk radio in this thread, anybody see the trends that came out yesterday? KOZN appears to have a slight edge over KXSP in the sports battle. And by slight, I mean gigantic.

I wonder how the afternoon show battle is going?

Anonymous said...

I agree with others that Kevin is gifted. I enjoy his play by play and much of the time his talk show. He and Severe are hands down so much better than Matt it's not even funny. I just think in the last couple of years his little personal digs have gotten in the way of his professionalism and there will be a time down the line where he will regret some of the things he did and said. Sean C may not be as polished but his energy and work ethic come through strong.Rivals is what it is..a previous poster said that exists for the fans and he's right. I don't think coaches have ever put much stock in it so that's not shocking. But I think everybody wants a clue as to the quality of of a recruit even if its a very subjective opinion.

Husker insider... Huh, huh.... He said "inside her"

As an outsider, I agree that KK is VERY talented(for a guy with a squirelly voice)...but he needs to learn to stop making adversaries out of people he doesn't like.

He hasn't figured out that it isn't smart to burn bridges, no matter how insignificant you think those bridges are. But I guess if you plan on living in Nebraska the rest of your life, go right ahead and alienate certain TV and radio people! Damn, this place is inbred!

As for Severe, I really like the football knowledge, and humor he brings to the afternoon drive show...but a guy who looks like actor Tony Cox, should NEVER bag on TV people at 3, 6, and 42

I've only listened to Perrault a few times, but I'd give that dolt the same advice. He needs to ease up off the Jim Rome act while he's at it. Taking on-air potshots at other stations or media members (who do not have the luxury, permission, or medium to defend themselves) is bushleague, and not needed to make "good radio"

Of course, now I've taken a shot at him- He or his Mom will post a defensive rebuttal, accusing the rest of us of posting anonymously!Listen you cretin!: Many of us would get fired if our employers knew we posted on this rag. When you grow up, get the wife/life partner, buy a house, and have a family, you'll understand why we want to keep our jobs.

Anonymous said...

"Life partner"? Please don't tell me Perrault is gay! We don't need him. We're doing just fine. He'll just bring us down.

Anonymous said...

Methinks someone has got a lot of pent up hostility...

Bredow on sports...."The Jays played a pretty DESHENT game last night"

Andrea talks so sexy....

Tony Cox?? I thought he was going for the Will Smith look...

Previous blogger is right. KK may be riding high now, but someday he'll get bucked off (See Kent). It happens to everybody

Just remember, KK...the same people you crap on going up are
the same people you run into on the way down.

Mend fences with whoever you need to now while you're on top. You'll be the bigger man and it'll pay off for you big time when you need it.

Trust me...if you stay in any business long enough, you will.
