Lite 101.9 switches formats

Lite 101.9 FM changed to the Big O 101.9 at 3 p.m. Thursday. The new format consists of ’80s rock targeting 25 to 54-year-old adults.

“It’s the music that many adults grew up with in Omaha, like Bruce Springsteen, the Police, Eric Clapton and Tom Petty,” said Billy Shears, program director at the Big O.

The voice of the Big O is John O’Hurley (pictured) of Mr. J. Peterman and “Dancing with the Stars” fame.

"Big O 101.9", Lincoln. Interesting that they have not applied to move the city of license to Omaha after clearly focusing on Omaha for the last decade or so.

Have to wonder if something might be in the works after 102.7 moves to Papillion/Omaha -- as if perhaps 101.9 will again be a Lincoln station in a format and ownership swap. Who knows.

Why not put Matt Perrualt in charge...?

I caught about 15 minutes of the Big O today and the music is not that bad. They did play alot of older music but there was some decent 90's in there. Its alot better than lite rock 1019. With all the format changes I would think power 106.9 would try to get into lincoln to face off with the hip hop rap r&b side of kfrx since 94.1 in much more CHR and alot less rap. Or 107.3 would go more mainstream/CHR becasue of the recent changes in formats, even though they are in two markets most the stations above cover omaha and lincoln well.

Ok..3 p.m. I get the notice in my e-mail of a format change, with a link to new stations website. I click on it. No website up yet. 6:30 p.m., just clicked on it again. This time 1 generic page with a notice that says "new web site coming soon". Wouldn't it just be good business practice to actually HAVE a site up and running before you send out the notice about it? And by the way.....preprogrammed radio of ANY format sucks. Long live the day when jock's mattered...and I don't mean those yerk headed frisbee toting cheeba monkey reprobates on Z-92.

At least it not country or fm talk. how about a real rock station like the dam was.

I'll just stay with satellite--can pick whatever music I want without commercials and can laugh listening to the guy Todd n' Tyler built their careers around imitating in Omaha while insisting they never listened to his show. Terrestrial FM radio is just about done. AM has a few legs left, but FM is a couple of years away from disappearing off the planet, Thank God!

Oh well....I just continue to listen to my XM radio in the car and at home. Much better selection of music and no commercials.

I just love the way you "too cool for the room" guys continually bash Todd and Tyler. What has it been 13 years now number one? Granted, the liberal anti Bush crap gets old, but that show has grown from "jackass radio" to a pretty damn funny and well produced show for the demo they are catering to. Your jealousy leaks through your posts.....

Anonymous said...

I personally enjoy the anti-Bush, liberal crap. But then what would you expect from an anti-Bush liberal? :)

I think the change absolutely sucks. The target is supposedly my age group. I don't like waking up to rock muscic. I preferred the softer side that 101.9 offered. Funny thing is...did they actually ask anyone or just make assumptions on what we prefer? I guess it's the latter. I also didn't have to guess if Jack was going to discuss anything not meant for younger ears. So much for a station that the whole family could enjoy. Guess we didn't matter. Now turning the dial.....

Things I would expect from an anti-Bush liberal:

(a) The odor of cannabis
(b) Prius keys on a PETA keychain
(c) Starbuck employee discount card tucked into hemp wallet
(d) A large collection of John Lennon's albums to prove your pacifist chops (all the time ignoring Lennon's financial support of terrorist organizations)
(e) A naive belief that a powerful and large faction of the 1.2 billion muslims worldwide will stop killing non-muslims if we 'give peace a chance'

Things I would expect from the Pro Bush right:

1.) A provclivity to wear your religion on your sleeve denouncing homosexuality all the while visiting parks or restrooms for a knobber from the same sex.

2.) A fervent belief that God created the world in seven days while not understanding what a day is to God and working several million years to destroy what God created in the supposed seven days.

3.) Driving around in your ultra big vehicle burning as much fossil fuel as you can saying; "Hell, let the next generation fend for itself."

4.) A collection of Ann Coulter books that skew reality and push a morality that you know you don't really believe in.

5.) A naive belief that the rest of the world is out to punish the United States because in your opinion the US is so much better than any other place in the world.

6.) That Dick Cheney really did not have anything to do with the fire that started in his office destroying several documents that could be used against this Administration.

7.) That there will be any type of admirable legacy for this administration 20 years in the future.

(2) I do believe in God, don't care how long it took the world to be created, and am not sure wtf the last part of your argument is even saying.

(3) I do not drive an SUV.

(4) I own no Ann Coulter books. However, she is simply a counter-balance to Michael Moore and Bill Maher.

(5) Yea, so 911 was our fault? So, the Sudanese natives (ie non-muslims) get killed because of us?

(6) Don't know....don't care

(7) Don't care

Hurry along now, I am sure Maher's craptastic show is starting. How can a guy that was in f*ucking DC Cab have any credibility.

The format sounds a lot like the Bob FM format they used for a little while on 106.9 (another NRG/Waitt station that's undergone many changes over the years).

Now, we have 101.9 and 96.1 with very similar formats and no lite ac outlet. What a bizarre market this is. I just can't believe that KFAB is number one. Their local programming is so sophomoric and their national programming so so far to the right, the station should flip frequencies with 1620.

As for "The Big O 101-9"...I see another change coming within 2 years. 96.1, 104.5 and 105.9 are too well poised to lose many listeners to 101.9. A real personality is the only thing that would make that station's ratings soar.

ear on omaha said...

There IS a station that fills the vacuum caused by the demise of the lite ac format on 101.9: Magic 1490 KOMJ-AM.

It's a mix of soft ac and some nostalgia (adult standards and big band). I think they are informative without being intrusive. They don't have a lot of DJ chatter, either.

Anonymous said...

The Perrault doesn't understand the change. Unless they play all Aerosmith, Boston or any and all music made by Boston, MA musicians, the Perrault will not listen to it. All bow down to all that is Massaschuets. All kneel before the altar of the Sox, the Pats, the Celts and The Perrault.

linda j. said...

Here's a suggestion for Journal Broadcast Group...
With the format change on 93.3 fm, this market is without a classic country format. Drop the all-sports format on 590 (which is so far in the ratings toilet) and start playing classic country. You'll save money by getting rid of the local dead weight. Even if you had no local talent (or just a morning show and then go jockless), your ratings would dramatically improve over what you're doing now.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Magic 1490 is a very good replacement for lite. I started listening to it a few months ago, and really locked into it when lite went all Christmas (I like Christmas music, just not wall to wall).

There's some voices on there that have been in Omaha/Lincoln radio for years.

Solid sound. Lite was even a bit too "gabby" at times.

Thanks to all about the information on 1490. You've piqued my curiosity.

Mookie & Michelle ROCK!!!!!!! Someone mentioned Q102 several posts ago. The BREW is Q102 reincarnated. Keep rocking BREW. The Big O will not be around for more than 2-3 years.

Anonymous said...

Even if it's not around in 2 years, for now I think the mix they've got on the "new" KOOO is great for the 30-45 age group. Though having just one jock's voice is reminiscent of Bob FM, which sucked out loud!!

Anonymous said...

The new KLTQ (Big "O" 101.9) is looking better than the old promise of "More Rock, Less Talk" That's one thing I hated about the KLTQ DJs in general. They tended to talk over the beginning and end of the music. So far, so good. If they start the same old crap, I'll switch stations again.

Anonymous said...

The slogan was "LITE Rock, Less Talk" but they DID talk too much. Hopefully, KOOO-FM will play tons of music and not be intrusive, but still have a local flavor. Otherwise, it is just another music station without personality. Why not just listen to satellite if you want that.

Music-wise, this station sounds like 96.1, 98.5, 104.5 and 105.9 all mixed up.

Anonymous said...

I am Sorry The Brew isn't even close to what Q 102 was!.... KOOO....Sucks. And If Billy Shears goes on and Talks...There is no such thing as less talk with him..Doesn't know when to shut his Pie Hole....

Anonymous said...

"More Rock" or "LITE ROCK".... It makes no difference. It shows you how often I listen to the old station. I guess I'm too cheap to pay for Satellite radio.

Radio stations can still make money with their advertisements and minimize the chatter. I grew up in the early days of FM (I.E., the demongraphic KOOO-FM is trying to reach)

Anonymous said...

ad guy here with clients that spend big bucks in the omaha market- local radio is at an all time low. these programmers need to get back to some basic local radio that has an emotional element. its very sad to see such a powerful medium become so nominal because of a few people that have no idea how to operate radio. look at all the tries nrg/waitt has made and failed...
they had an opportunity to win when clear channel brought back the two brainless egos but now i understand nrg has a female version that doesn't know a rock station if it hit her in the head. hopefully things can turn around but for an advertiser that wants some advice keep your investement far from radio. also demand money back that was invested in a format that is no longer.

KOOO? Sorry, is that 101.9's new call letters? Wasn't there a KOOO a long time ago?

KOOO signed on in Omaha around 1950, on 1420 AM,and those call letters stayed around until I think the mid 70's, if not a bit later.

I, for one, am sorry that they made the change. I enjoy the lite music, and I think that the age range that they say they are targetting is what they were already doing. I am in that age range, and enjoyed the music that they were playing. It was nice to be able to listen to the radio on the way to work and not get stressed before I even got there. That is what it did for me. Also I enjoyed listening to Delilah. Oh well, I guess they don't care what WE the listeners want. If they did they would have at least given us some warning of what they were doing and let us give our comments BEFORE they made the change.

Anonymous said...

Maybe they could get Delilah on 1490AM? Sounds like the only station that could carry her and not totally screw the format. Unfortunately, KOMJ probably doesn't have the budget to carry a syndicated radio show. I hope I'm wrong.

Anonymous said...

The omaha market needs something like the edge or the dam again. The river is good but nothing like an active rock station like the blaze in lincoln. The new format is not like bob fm becasue 1. bob failed bc it was on 106.9 without a good signal 2 its format was not well advertised besides on its signal. I really thought that 101.9 would switch very soon but to either using power 106.9 format or with dual coverage an CHR or active rock format. Even so when 102.7 and 95.1 and 107.7 sign on in omaha with there new signals things will change.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a bench warmer format to make more money with out live jocks to prepare for 102.7 serving omaha with the same basic format.

Anonymous said...

what is this 102.7 everybody is referencing? When can we expect it in Omaha proper. And why do we need "Radio Disney?"

As for 101.9...sounds like the Bob FM format did; and let's just say that a little John O'Hurley goes a long way.

For those of us old enough to remember the automated "Beautiful Music" days of FM, this new-fangled voice tracking is sounding too familiar. In the old days, it was four or so reel-to-reel tapes that played the beautiful music along with a cart carousel that played the stuff between the music.

It went something like this: Reel 1 plays a song, Reel 2 plays a song, Reel 3 plays a song, Reel 4 plays a song, Cart 1 - Station ID, Cart 2 - Ad, Cart 3 - Weather, Cart 4 - Ad, Cart 5 - some chitchat from the associated AM station's DJ; then repeat starting with Reel 1 again.

Typically the carts were changed a couple times a day and the tapes were swapped out each month. If the station management was lazy and always played the same tape in the same reel everyday, by then end of the month you could set your watch by what song was playing when.

Eventually "Beautiful Music" went out of favor and we got live DJs spinning rock, top 40, etc.

Now we're back to the "Beautiful Music" formula, only with everything on a hard drive.

What goes around comes around...

"Great Local Radio" Ms. Quass???
You're a joke. This new station in Omaha has you speaking out of the other side of your mouth. You obviously know nothing about local radio. I feel bad for the dedicated LOCAL people working hard for you. When have you been in Omaha/Lincoln and learned the marketplace. It's corporate kissers like yourself that ruin radio. Go find another industry to look for a year end bonus.

Why couldn't you just leave well enough alone? We didn't ask for a change in format. We liked Jack Swanda and intelligent commentary and programming on morning radio. John O-Hurley sounds as if he is trying too hard to be funny. It just comes off as pathetic.

Anonymous said...

Where exactly is O'Hurley recording his stuff? Just how aware is he of what's being programmed around him?

Anonymous said...

O'Hurley has a website that advertises, among other things, his voice work, so he's very aware of how they use his voice. He makes a lot of money by being the caricature that he is. If nothing else, his voice definitely differentiates this station from others in town. But it's not like he's actually announcing the songs or weather like a DJ would. Almost all radio stations use a professional person to be the voice of the station. O'Hurley just happens to be well-known. That's why I think some people get confused and think he is working at the station. Oh, the public!

Not only do I miss Jack Swanda, Kay Kriss and Theresa Cassidy, but I miss the 70's music that I was raised up with. Now there is not really anything to make my early morning run fun to listen too. I have followed Jack Swanda from the Jack and Fred show on lite 96 to 101.9 and loved both. I just wish that more people would enjoy quality announcers who do not bash others, are funny, intelligent, and often give you something to think about. It is always disheartening to see someone good go away. I consider Jack Swanda to be another important part of my morning routine just as Johnny Carson was at night before he retired. Thanx for all the good years Jack. I will miss you as well as many others.

Why would anyone miss Jack Swanda? Or ANY DJ's for that matter....
No DJ's in the morning suits me just fine. Not having to listen to their lame jokes, endless chatter about NOTHING. Music with no talking is the way ALL stations should go!

Anonymous said...

I thoroughly agree with the individual from Jan 14 at 8:11. I have listened to Jack Swanda and find it refreshing that someone can bring humor to your day without being at the expense of others, bring provoking thought without bashing remarks, and best of all, his long term success with class programing in a time where shock jocks are falling like rocks. Thanks Jack for all the class you brought to Omaha radio.

John O'Hurley, pimping Omaha radio and polishing out his impression of Richard Dawson on the Family Feud these days yet he's still refered to as J. Peterman. Guess his 'Feud gig isn't getting as much attention as his predecessors. I guess FF will always be known as Richard Dawson's show (even in 50 years) and O'Hurley will always be "that guy from Seinfeld" and Dancing w/ The Stars.

I really wish Omaha would get a modern rock station. I moved to Phoenix a few years ago and found that I had been missing out on hundreds of new songs in the Rock Genre. 89.7 may call themselves new rock, but they play mostly Emo Genre rock and rarely update their playlists. Every time I visit my family in Omaha, I hear them play the same stuff I heard 4-5 years ago. I makes me depressed when I hear that stuff.

Thinking about getting a car insurance quote?
Car Insurance
A growing number of people are dropping their auto insurance to try to save money, according to a recent study by the Insurance Research Council (IRC). If the current rate of unemployment continues, the IRC estimates that the national uninsured rate will climb from 13.8 percent in 2007 to 16.3 percent in 2010. With that many people driving without coverage, it's dangerous to be uninsured. But how much car insurance do you really need?
If you're like many people feeling the pinch, your inclination is to get the bare minimum of insurance coverage required by the law in your state. That's a good place to start, though those minimums may not fully protect you -- or your assets -- if you file a claim. We recommend getting more than the minimum coverage unless you are driving a beater and have no assets to protect.
