'The Big Show' Auction Will Help Shooting Victims

KXSP (590 AM) afternoon sports talk show host Matt Perrault told listeners Friday that he was looking for a way to do his part to help the victims and families of Wednesday's mall shooting.

His idea - to auction off sports memorabilia - took off during Friday's show. Already, nearly three dozen items are available for on-line bid (courtesy of Omaha's Proxibid.com) during Monday's program.

The list includes a baseball autographed by New York Yankee pitcher (and former Nebraska player) Joba Chamberlain, two tickets to the Kansas City Chiefs' game against the Tennessee Titans, a hat signed by Nebraska's three Heisman Trophy winners and an opportunity to sit on press row during a Creighton men's basketball game.

We need to get this moved over to Onow.com!

How about auctioning off the opportunity to kick Matt Perrault right in the junk? I'd opening the bidding at $500.

Knowing the Perrault reads this blog...I am not surprised by this attempt to "show compassion" after his major mistake of saying that a basketball game on TV was more important than coverage of this tragedy. What a way to get people to forget about his foot in the mouth comments. Now he can say "he is part of the community" and what a ratings booster this could be for him too!!!! The transparency is glaring.

I'm not a big Matt Perrault fan, but 12:07's comments were beyond good taste and intelligent thought.

Congratulations, 12:07 - you win the award for biggest anonymous moron on a chat site.

you would have to pay me to go sit out in the cold and wathc the 2nd worst team in pro football play the Tennessee Titans......the chiefs are horrible and Herm Edwards must be fired now!

So, again I say...

IF nobody hears it on the radio does it still make us feel good?

I would bid well in excess of 1K to kick matt in the junk

I think Matt Perrault is trying to game some brownie points in a vain attempt to save his job and whatever credibility he had left.

2:51 PM anon: Who is in poorer taste....12:07 PM anon or Matt Perrault's comments??

2:49 PM - I have to agree with you. I am one who is not prone to look at the negative or synical view of things and I have listened to Perraults show before. After reading the blog entry below about the Creighton game, I was anxious to see how he would respond. The response on Friday was SO OVER THE TOP that I found Perrault's attempt to "show compassion" not heartfelt and reactionary. There were statement by Perrault that he loves Omaha and feel's like he's part of the community....etc...etc. These are words that I have never heard from his mouth before or after the shooting on Wednesday. I have to come to the conclusion that this is a PR move to improve Perrault's standing in the public's eye first and foremost. It is sad. I only hope that money is raised but that people see the two-faced side of Perrault for what it is. He has lost my listenership based upon this string of events. The comments and criticism from others about him now do not seem to be so severe after this ploy.

I raise the bid to $1,500 to kick Matt in the junk.

It's on.... I am up to $3,000

$3,500

Probably the station higher ups were the ones to issue the statements. I don't think matt has the brains to think out of the box.

Paul in Omaha:

Look, I call in and disagree with Matt probably more than anyone posting here--just check the podcasts. But give the guy a break. He is making an effort and the attempts here and I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as to his motive. I think those making light of the auction are more guilty of having mo class than anything Matt has done. If what he does means that one of these families has a smaller financial burden added to their tremendous emotional burden, why the hell are you people ragging on Perrault for that. Jesus H people.....

Anonymous said...

There is little doubt in my mind that this is a ploy...especially after NRG announced they were raising funds and after The Perrault's statements (and talking to) after the tragedy.

Anonymous said...

It's not a "ploy", but don't believe for a second that Matty had anything to do with the instigation of this auction.
Journal had to do something after NRG's fund-raising efforts were begun. Most of their media outlets are waaaaay down in the ratings here in the big O. (Ch. 3rd, 590's local programming)
The higher ups in Milwaukee told Matt what to say & he pulled his foot out of his mouth long enough to say "yes, sir!".
ANY fundraising efforts are welcome, regardless of the attempt to spin how "he" was looking for a way to help the victims & families.

I do not believe for a second that this is Perrault's idea. But he's more than happy to make himself look like Mother Theresa.

I'm glad its being done. But this won't change my opinion of Perrault in the slightest.

Four grand!!!

The Perrault needs the ratings as well. The Zone is whooping up on The Perrault.

Anonymous said...

Well I have my doubts that Perraults or NRG's motives are totally honorable, they don 't seem to be alone. Well this is obviously a horrific episode in Omaha history, it really seems like the media (both local and national) continues to milk it for every drop of ratings they can squeeze out. It's time to show some respect for the victims and their families and stop making it the first ten minutes of every newscast.

I kind of have to agree. Yes, this is a terrible terrible tragedy. But we are only just beginning. Mark my words. The following is coming:

"Terror in the Heartland: One Week Later"

"Bloodshed in our Hometown: Two Weeks Later"

"Tragedy at Westroads: One Month Later"

"Von Maur Massacre: Six Months Later"

"Horror In Omaha: One Year Later"

The Perrault emphasized that this was not about him or his station or about ratings or about what other stations are doing. In other words, this is about him, his station, his ratings and what other stations did before him.

Good stuff on the auction however. Buy it despite him because the cause is right.

11:21, *sigh* I hear ya. But you left out KETV's the "Von Maur Tragedy Team" headed by Farah Fazol.

MP is just ordinary. He's just like all of these other talk show guys who come into a place they know nothing about, proceed to slap anything and everything just to get attention...see Rose, Kugler, Huskers, Dave Webber, Tom Osborne, Lil Red, you name it.

When that fails, they resort to a "co-host." Travis was already re-arranging his own Titanic deck chair when he had to misfortune of picking up the phone. "Sure, I'll do it...why not, get some more cash before you fire me."

When that doesn't work, they move on to STUPID things---again just to get attention (see the Creighton basketball crack).

Then when THAT doesn't work, they retreat and try to be Mr. Nice guy...

Give Journal credit. They've been more than patient.

Goodbye Matt...sadly, we definitly knew ya.

Wow. I didn't realize Matt Perrault was still around.

Like it or not Perrault is staying for awhile. He may be in second place, but there are a lot of Creighton fans that won't listen to 1620 because they don't like hearing about which husker has a hang nail from practice 24/7.

Give the guy a break, his auction raised about 19,000. Regardless of his motives it was a good deed. Oh, I forgot, anyone that thinks for themselves and thought that 3,6, and 7 should have returned to regular programming like 42 is an ass.

Hey JS, what happened to not calling people names? Didn't you say soemthing about that under another post...? Talk about hypocrisy...

JS:

I'm going to ignore your ignorant comment from above, as it shows how "classy" you are. Some of us had friends that were involved in this horrible tragedy and we were waiting for information regarding their status. The only outlet available to us WAS the networks, as information from other sources was not forthcoming. Please watch your comments and have a little decorum before lumping all of us together under the umbrella you have given to all of us. Have a little sympathy and show a little remorse for your fellow man.

JS - your condescending comments say a lot about the listeners that Matt attracts.
Please leave your "spin" for elsewhere.........

MP stays or goes based on two things: Money and ratings. You need both to stay.

If they can't sell it, he's history.

If the Journal sales folks CAN sell his worthless excuse for a show WITHOUT ratings, they'll get somebody else who has a chance to get some numbers.

Either way, bye bye Matty and Trav unless lightning strikes and somebody actually listens to your show long enough to get counted.

BTW, don't bronze a statue of MP just yet for the auction....practically every organization in this town did some kind of fundraiser and this community has poured out for the families.

We just happen to know about MP's because he did it on the radio.

I just love totally anonymous comments.

Anyway, were can I find Perraults rating that everybody thinks are crap. I have seen overall ratings from Big Sports 590; however, I have not seen anything specific on his show.

My point is the same that there are plently of people that like him, so I doubt he is going anywhere soon.

I apologize for my comment, which implied that some of you don't think for yourselves.

If only ALL of us could be as upfront and forthcoming with our identities as "JS".....

Anonymous said...

8:01 pm - obviously "js" has more balls than the rest of us to reveal his identity. Why could we ever have criticized him? JS....you're MY herooooooo......

Anonymous said...

My point is that with initials or a handle one can attribute comments to the right person (even if that person) is unkown. If I had posted anonymousily you all would not know who to be angry at.

Anonymous said...

We're bloggers...we're all angry at everyone all the time...At least I think...talk amongst yourselves

Anonymous said...

JS is probably not even his real initials

Anonymous said...

it's just two initials he picked at random on the keyboard -- sort of like his thoughts, only smarter.

Anonymous said...

By using a handle or consistent initials, it makes this easier to read(and follow in my opinion).

JS are my real initials as well.

No, that is what happens when he is moved out of Omaha.
