(grumble grumble) why can't we post the story here as well? (grumble grumble)

I, too, haven't yet read the article, but I have been told by a friend at Channel 6 the general results of the ratings.

Here's the gist of the latest book: In the coveted adults 25-54 category:

KETV is #1 at 5-6am, 5pm, 6pm, 10pm, and weekend mornings (against the first half hour of WOWT 8-830am). WOWT is in second place and KMTV is a far distant third.

WOWT is #1 at 6-7am. KETV is a close second. KMTV is a very distant third.

KMTV is #1 at noon (compared to WOWT and KETV's 11:30am).

The "big shift in power" is in reference to KETV being a solid #1 for the first time in many years, WOWT a solid second place (very disappointing to those who work hard at Channel 6) and KMTV remains far behind in the third position.

Wow. It surprises me that with KETV winning so much in the evenings, they would decide to tinker with the anchors and what-not.

Far different cry from the WOWT model: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it...Hell, even if it *is* broke, don't fix it"

Can somebody post the actual link to the story in the City Weekly. Clicking on the link in this story just opens the CW home page and I can't find the story anywhere on their site.

Doesn't surprise me at all that 6 is in second place. It was only a matter of time before the bad morale within filtered to the outside world. That and the "consultant word is the bible" mentality will do nothing but take you down.
Don't worry you WOWT non-management employees, I still love ya.

Anonymous said...

Gee, I sure hope angry wrestling guy starts spewing venom on this string. Maybe he can rant a little about his 16 team playoff plan for college football. So insightful.

Sean,

Any inside scoop of Jim Rose wanting his gig back as discussed yesterday on "The Big Show"?

Anonymous said...

Forget it, I'm bringing him to Pittsburgh where his Hermie the Dentist Elf persona will be appreciated by my new Kool-Aid club. You people didn't appreciate greatness when you had it, muah-ha-ha-ha.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like the big six is running off another good on-air employee.

The changes at Channel 7 have come about for two reasons. First, management has (finally) taken the approach to actively anticipate the trends of the viewers before the book is published. Today's viewers are much more dynamic in their habits, so the tried and true "don't fix it if it ain't broke" approach just doesn't work. Neither does blindly following advice from consultants.

The second and equally important reason for the changes in the line-up has to do with changes that will be coming in the next twelve months or so. I can't go into details right now, except to say that these changes will be amicable and not a repeat of that unfortunate Carol Schrader debacle of 1996.

Finally, it should be stated for those not in the business that all four news operations really do pour their heart into producing a good news product. Unfortunately, there are obstacles that prevent some of the news teams from doing everything they want to be all they can be. Some of those are management-related, some financially related.

Regardless of which station you watch (or work for), please know that they really do want to deliver a great product. It is a very competitive business, not a lot of pay (for most of the team), and not a lot of praise in return.
Yes, it was their choice to go into the business in the first place, but it is also their passion (for most, not for all involved).

who might that be at 6?

Anonymous said...

8:15 AM:

Thanks for slanting more to the positive and telling it like it really is.

Anonymous said...

I dont't know. I have been tuning more and more to 7 after watching 6 forever, but Last night at 10 Rob McCartney was constantly stumbling on lines.Julie who wasnt on, is normally the one that can't seem to read.

Anonymous said...

Who is the one being run off at Channel 6? They only have a few good ones left on-air.

Anonymous said...

Is it "six news" or "channel six news?" I think they should call themselves "wow" six (as in wow!, not w-o-w-t).

Anonymous said...

If they post the article here, there is no need to read the magazine. if you don't read the magazine, the advertisers aren't happy and the magazine and this site go bye bye. Read the friggin thing! PS if 7 got rid of Elictia in the AM, my wife would watch it. She turns it to 6 when she get's up. Oakey, Severe and Andrea can stay
!

n-the-(kn)o will the public know, or will we be left in the dark?

Anonymous said...

Lets just say they'll be born again when they leave

Anonymous said...

I am not privy to the specifics, but let's just say that, towards the end of the year, we'll probably be seeing another drawn out good-bye like Channel 6 did when Pat Persaud retired...and most of us won't be quite as excited to see this person leave Ch. 7 as we were when Pat left 6. That's all I know right now.

Anonymous said...

just as long as it is nothing like what KMTV did it should be ok, but it will be kind of strange to loose a good person from the #1 KETV.

Anonymous said...

It would be kind of strange to "lose" a good person also.

Anonymous said...

Bring back Tom Knight........my stud muffin...he was yummy

Anonymous said...

Oh God help me. I couldn't bear to endure another Pat Persaud-esque retirement.

Anonymous said...

8:15, I agree with everything your saying. However, even the number one station in town at this time is plagued with idiots pushing the buttons, trucking cameras and rolling the prompters. Why do stations put up with these employees? Is the fear of a lawsuit worth possible loss in ratings/revenue? Just thinking outloud.

The dedicated employees (non-management) who strive for excellence are always at war with this problem of ineptitude.

O.Mediablog said...

Will this "shift in power" be long-lived? KETV's on top for now, how much change is too much?

There's reason for concern about KETV's top spot with all the changes. And just think about what the still-new First News Weekend and how all of their on-air changes will affect viewership.

earlier comments point to a more specific departure, I wouldn't be surprised to see Julie Cornell leaving the anchor desk at the end of the year. I couldn't see Rob McCartney going anywhere, he seems comfortable at the moment and he clearly loves his job! My guess is that it will be Julie Cornell leaving towards the end of the year.

O.Mediablog said...

wow...Julie was looking rough tonight. I wonder if she's under the weather. And no, I am not going to pun that one!

Anonymous said...

I think Rob's the one leaving since he cut back on reporting

Anonymous said...

Any ideas on which company could purchase kptm?

Anonymous said...

to 6:29pm:
whoever it is, it can't get much worse than Pappas.

Hey, omediablog:
Julie did look a little tired tonight. Hope you aren't going to totally dog her out on your blog. I like what you've written so far.

and I agree with 3:45:
it'll probably be Julie. She's got three kids that are getting to be that age where they need a parent around in the afternoon/evening. Regardless, got to admire anyone who can juggle a career and 3 kids like that.

That's T-h-o-m Knight. How soon we forget our uber-talented morning-show host and his breaking-news checks of the Channel 6 Citycam Network. "And at 108th and Maple, well, looks like traffic is flowing smoothly. Nothing to report here." But that never stopped Thom did it?

I say bring back Knight and team him with Tom Elser. Thom-and-Tom in the morning, anyone?

Anonymous said...

OMEDIABLOG - GIVE IT UP....LEAVE IT TO THE "PROFESSIONALS" LIKE JIM AND SEAN. LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE HAVING A NICE CONVERSATION WITH YOURSELF OVER THERE. ..... OMEDIABLOG - YOU ARE NO TED BROCKMAN!!!!!!

Phil,

Maybe you need to get your happy little azz kicked by a wrestler, since it's obvious you lack the intestinal fortitude to back up the crap you're posting on here.

I can guarantee you this, there isn't a wrestler around that couldn't beat you down like the little beyotch that you are...you little spineless twit.

Anonymous said...

Julie Cornell refused to sign a new three-year-deal, but agreed to serve one year so Channel 7 could easy Brandi Petersen in. That's why Brandi is anchoring Sunday at 10pm and at 5 on weekdays.

In one year, it will be all Rob and Brandi, no more Julie.

Anonymous said...

Wow 7:34 --

Nothing like proving a poster's point. What, is no one signing onto your website -- rockhead.wrestler.blogspot.com? Here's a thought: Threatening to kick somebody's "azz" doesn't work on a blog.

So go back to high school and complete that unfinished junior year of yours. Maybe you can get a few freshmen in a headlock, give 'em a noogie, stuff 'em into a singlet and show 'em what real rasslin' is all about.

Anonymous said...

8:28 - you have the same jellied spine Phil does. All talk and no backup.

O.Mediablog said...

Julie looked much better for the 10 o'clock. Maybe she got a quick nap in, or maybe she's just feeling better. I was worried.

Oh, and 6:47: there's medication available for your condition. Thanks for reading, by the way. I'm sure you'll keep checking in. You can even comment on my blog if you want.

Anonymous said...

This article is misleading because the 6-7 race is well known. I would have expected something more suprising about KPTM at four or a more about KMTV with such a alarming headline, "shift of power".
KETV has weather on 24/7 on 7.2 at the same time 6 has 620 a crappy local substation. Their is nothing like weather to pull in viewers. Weather threatens peoples saftey more than sweeps stories. So people want good weather coverage. If 6 wants to pull ahead or even 3 they need to add NBC weather plus/or accuweather or the new DOT 2 sub NETWORK with good movies THAT IS LAUNCHNG IN FEB.

You know, the way to vie for ratings, historically, is for one of the female anchors to get pregnant. Maybe Tracy Madden or Carol Wang should think about that for the next few books.

Speaking of Tracy Madden, I watched her tonight and have two comments. 1) she does so much better without John Knicely around. 2) Please, Tracy, don't ever wear that THING you wore tonight again. It was hideous.

I really enjoy reading this blog, Sean and Jim. You guys are gracious enough to let us rant and rave. You even allow comments from people like "anonymous 6:47," who decides to throw insults at other posters, without any provocation. Not cool, man--not cool. So, to O.Mediablog I say "welcome to the doll house, babe." Most of us on here aren't like that and welcome another blog.

Anonymous said...

OMEDIABLOG - THANKS BUT NO THANKS. I THINK YOU AND MATT PERRAULT HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON. NOBODY CARES.......

Anonymous said...

What a jerk, 9:28.

Anyway, I really was hoping KPTM would show some good numbers for as hard as they've been working on their 4pm and 9pm news. What's this about them being sold? I think that might not be a bad thing.

Anonymous said...

Hey. I say good luck with your new blog. I know its just getting started but it seems fair so far. Nothing wrong with a new point of view.

Anonymous said...

Matt Perrault is Gay

Bring back Tom Knight

What ever happened to Thom? Is he still here in Omaha?

Anonymous said...

11:56 My dee-licious Thommy went to Phoenix. I once saw him at a charity event with his boy toy dejour....off in the corner, if you know what I mean. I was SO jealous. I had (make that still have) many a wrestling dream about him.

Anonymous said...

True story --- Thom Knight once ran his car into a ditch off I-80 after a drunken night of partying. Police found him slumped over the wheel, uninjured -- but when police searched his trunk, they found a collection of dildos and sex toys.

Anonymous said...

8:27pm - Is that what caused his departure from WOWT?

Anonymous said...

So that's what happened to my collection of "party favors". I wondered who took them.

Anonymous said...

Let's just say it was the straw that broke the camel's back...

Anonymous said...

Anon. at 3:12pm,

"However, even the number one station in town at this time is plagued with idiots pushing the buttons, trucking cameras and rolling the prompters. Why do stations put up with these employees?"

Why don't you just quit then? I think that management will be the judge of who is the "idiot." Its this type of negative attitude that brings morale down. After that, what's the point in trying?

"Is the fear of a lawsuit worth possible loss in ratings/revenue?"

Not everything is about race/sex.

Anonymous said...

I worked at one of the clubs here about 150 years ago. I'll never forget the first time I saw Mr. Knight in his leather outfit. Took five minutes to pick my jaw up off the floor. But he was a good tipper, I'll give him that.

Anonymous said...

8:29pm - Yeah, you gotta wonder if he ever wore that leather harness outfit under his business suit during a newscast.

Anonymous said...

Wait... are you guys saying he was gay?

Anonymous said...

Yes we are. And so is Matt Perrault.

Anonymous said...

6:21am - Was and still is.

As for Perrault, didn't the gays gave him back to the straights?

Anonymous said...

If working with Malorie Maddox doesn't straighten you out, there isn't much hope for you........

Anonymous said...

Matt Perrault tries to be Malorie Maddox a little too much, if you know what we mean...

Anonymous said...

No, not really.

Anonymous said...

Hey, Perrault got a rumor right. He had said Jim Rose had begged for his old gig back and, according to sources on the Nebraska Radio Board, that may be, in fact, true.

Good gravy gurdy, c'mon Rosy. What changed with your alleged "family situation"? Worse, it would really suck if Perrault got a rumor right for once.

Anonymous said...

Perrault has got his station out of last place as well in the ratings. Granted, it ain't far out of the basement, but he did pull it up from a 1.1 to a 2.2.

Anonymous said...

Now The Perrault is saying that fat people, like Coach Mangino of Kansas, essentially can't do their job because they are an image of the University and that is not the image they should project.

Can't do the job The Perrault? He certainly seemed to outcoach the fit, Beau Bridges looking Coach Billy C didn't he? Last I looked, he had one loss.

Just because somebody is obese and do not fit into your definition of beauty, doesn't mean that they can't do a job you arrogant punk.

Anonymous said...

Good point...Matt Perrault is much slimmer than Mark Mangino, and he can't do his job worth a CRAP.

Anonymous said...

7:27pm said "If working with Malorie Maddox doesn't straighten you out, there isn't much hope for you........"

Oh you poor ignorant soul! You're BORN straight, gay, or bi. Looking at a pretty woman isn't going to change that.

Think about it. If you're a straight guy, looking at Jim Siedlecki all morning (or David Beckham, for that matter) surely won't turn you gay. So a gay guy looking at Malorie isn't going to go straight either.

Oh yeah, if you wake up with morning wood and would do either Jimmy or Malorie then you're bi.

Maybe the point lost in these comments is that a newscaster's sexuality has nothing to do with their ability to do their on-air job.

Dildos and sex toys are equal opportunity devices- men, women, gay, bi, straight. As long as they're not vibrating across the newsdesk they should be a non-issue in your choice of newscaster.

Anonymous said...

9:45 PM:

Well said!

Anonymous said...

Wait a minute, why couldn't a straight man get caught with a bunch of dildos??? Maybe he was using them on a bunch of hot women???

Anonymous said...

Giggity, giggity, goo.

Anonymous said...

9:45 PM.......lighten up Francis!!!

Anonymous said...

6:55 am - You mean, like, after his Viagra wore off?

Anonymous said...

He might have to use his "Thom Thom" to find the right spot......

Anonymous said...

The Perrault is in deep doo doo again. He had been exclaiming that the rumor was that Jim Rose wanted his old gig back. Well, according to Sean Callahan, who had asked Rose directly, that isn't the case.

Way to go yet again, The Perrault. Caught again.
