Sharpe Is Huskers' New Football Play-by-Play Man

Tuesday's hiring announcement of Greg Sharpe as the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's footbal and baseball play-by-play announcer ends months of speculation about who would replace Jim Rose.

Sharpe is a two-time Kansas Sportscaster of the Year who was the play-by-play voice of Kansas State football and basketball from 1996 to 2002. A press release from the Husker Sports Network said he will continue to work as an announcer for Fox Sports Net in addition to his hosting duties for the Nebraska football and baseball TV coaches' shows.

He most recently has served as the Director of Operations at WIBW, where he has overseen a staff of 52, making programming decisions and assisting with sales accounts, marketing efforts and station promotions.

Sharpe is a native of Olathe, Kan.

Yea! I might actually be able to listen to a game without getting sick! But how will we know what junior high school each player is from without Rose at the mic?

Anonymous said...

Wonder if Perrault will start sucking up to UNL now so he can get Sharpe to appear on his show and boost those SAGGING ratings.

He desperately needs to get 590's ratings up there so it can match 1620's and give this board's lone 590 supporter a reason to feel good about herself, since she still can't grasp the 3-is-better-than-1 concept and continues to overplay her station's dimming relevance.

I liked what I heard from Mr. Sharpe last season filling in for Rose. One thing I will not miss is Memorial stadium being called the "old gray lady"!! Sure it is old, but it is a freakin temple of college football. Welcome Greg and best of luck to you!

Anonymous said...

Now back to the subject at hand please...

I think Sharpe will do an excellent job, as I had the opportunity to work with him at WIBW. He is a professional that will bring a decidedly different flavor to the Husker games. I look forward to listening to him throughout the Baseball and Football seasons. An excellent choice.

As long as this new guy can extol the virtues of Dorothy Lynch Salad Dressing...Then he'll be just fine.

Say thanks to Bendover Herbicide for better yields and crop protection....

What's funny is that the same people who will are oohing and aahing over Sharpe now will be the same ones who, a few years from now, will be calling for his ouster just as has been the case with Rose, Swain, Pavelka and even back to the days of Bremser.

Even funnier is the fact that the vast majority of those couldn't carry on a conversation with their mother about Nebraska football, let alone be able to handle more than 15 seconds of live play-by-play commentary without spraining their tongue.

Best of luck, Greg...and don't forget to keep your friends close and your critics closer...

Hey Jim Rose,

Why dont you get over your obsession with Matt Perrault's sexuality.

Anonymous said...

Matty boy,

If there's one thing I'll never obsess over, it's your sexuality.

Mainly because you have none...

Anonymous said...

too bad he won't be doing any wrestling play by play.

I do want to thank Jim Rose for always letting me know that the stadium was located at "10th and Vine", because I never would have found it otherwise.

Maybe they can, uh, bring back, uh, Jerry Tagge to, uh, do some more, uh, sidline, uh, reporting too, uh....

Man, woman, and child this os getting boring.

Just Wondering . . . What is going on with this blog? I thought its purpose was or is to provide regular updates on the goings on in all of Omaha's media outlets on a regular basis? The reason I ask is, I notice on WOWT, they have changed their format for the 10pm news, they have updated their weather theme and graphics, and I see they have at least 3 new reporters and one new anchor, but nothing is said about it and nothing is known about them. I think one of the new reporters used to work for KMTV. I also notice that KETV has made some significant changes. One being that they now have an hour long 10pm newscast on SUN night, in addition to a new reporter. My point is, how often should we expect this site to be updated with current info instead of every now and then tidbits? Once again . . . not criticizing, just wondering.

Anonymous said...

Yet We get Matt P is Gay updates all the Time...

11:03am... the changes at KETV have been covered...

No need to crack on Tagge like that. It wasn't his calling, but he tried and gave a decent effort. At least he knew his limits and walked away with dignity.

Those who haven't are more people like Tags who just aren't born to be behind the microphone. I'll start the list and everyone feel free to pile on, er, add to it:

People who should never have even been behind a microphone let alone still have that privilege:

Rose
Perrault
Fubar
Cigar Store Indian Knicely
Windrum
Cullinan
Brandt
Yeagar the Horrible
Diver Dan Perrault Did Me

I find it really odd that someone seems to have an un-natural obsession with Matt Perault's sexual orientation... Dont you have something better to do - such as search my space profiles for 14 year olds?

Anonymous said...

6:18 -- geez, talk about obsessions. Maybe it's best you keep that to yourself...

Anonymous said...

So who's this new Adrian guy in KETV's Lincoln bureau?

Anonymous said...

Why have we gotten no story on the firing of Journal's GM and promotions director? Seems like that's a big story on the heels of a fall book that was labeled a "gigantic" disappointment by one radio guy I know....

Anonymous said...

I for one couldn't care less about Matt Perrault's sexual orientation.

Now that I think about it...I'm not even sure if he has one.

Anonymous said...

Is this blog awake? New talent in the area..channel 6 is apparently trying to be more like action 3 (although in a rather lame way, but what else would you expect from that operation)..a Superbowl commercial with T and T on a non-Journal station (albeit a very lame commercial that really didn't make a lot of sense) and a visit from a Presidential nominee..none of these topics are more interesting than three of the last four topics about guys no one in the metro gives two shits about?

Anonymous said...

To 9:26 a.m. - SILENCE. So many more people care about this topic than what stiffs are now doing live shots from ice cream socials and if they meet your approval or not. You and others who whine about being off topic while being off topic yourselves has become tiresome.

So, someone tell me more about this Matt guy...

Anonymous said...

Is it about time for someone to drop the "... eats turds out of a toilet" bomb to get the blog moving again?

Anonymous said...

Wake me when something new shows up...

Anonymous said...

The Perrault is very upset he didn't get this gig. After all, he has been nothing but kind hearted to the University and didn't stir up any controversy at all.

Anonymous said...

OH PUHLEEEEEZE....Perrault isn't talented enough to call Little League play-by-play, let alone major college baseball.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, this is such a high-brow blog and such earth-altering topics are covered on here, how could these people POSSIBLY sully it with words like turd or Perrault.

Anonymous said...

"The Parrault????" Is this some new wrestling move?

Anonymous said...

"The Perrault" is not only the name of the most self glossed glorified radio host in the Omaha market, it is also the name of a pro wrassling finishing move where the wrestler whines, complains, and basically talks his opponent into submission without every relying on little things like facts, truth, or logic. The secret to getting out of "The Perrault" manuver is to talk to him about his ratings. It may backfire and make him cry even louder but it also may shut him up.

Anonymous said...

There are a TONS of media folks in Omaha, but only a few of them get continually ragged on. Of these, people like Todd, Tyler and Tool Justice can take solace in the fact that they probably make decent money.

That said, with so many people hating him, dick for ratings and a salary fit for an illegal, what keeps Matt going???

Anonymous said...

Did we ever find out what happened to the Omedia blog???

Anonymous said...

So again, we don't know anything about the new reporters, the changes on air at the Brew or anything else that may have transpired in the media because this blog is dead..

Anonymous said...

To 1:29 P.M. - STOP WHINING.
If you want to know what's going on at those stations, call them and ask. This thread is about the new NU announcer and, as always, Perrault and wrestling.

STOP WHINING.

Still no decent news? This place is becoming worse than The Cure's website

(That's really really bad!)

Does the Fox network force its stations to spend 10 minutes a night talking about American Idol? KPTM had that Chris kid on yet again to talk about how American Idol led to his big break into Hollywood by staring on something on the TV Guide channel. Isn't this at least the thrid time they've had him on? Sadly, his interview was more entertaining than the clips from the actual show.

Anonymous said...

Ugh..I think that Chris kid's 15 minutes were up 15 minutes ago.

Anonymous said...

Did anyone catch South Park at 8:30 tonight?

I think I stumbled across how KMTV came up with the idea of "Action 3 Attack News".

Check it out: http://southpark.comedycentral.com/video_by_episode.jhtml?episodeId=103849

Three videos total, click play on the first one and it should play all three. It's spooky how much the third one is like the Action 3 News - both the intro and the reporting style!

Okay Jim and Sean, whatssup?

Is this blog offically dead? The picture of the City Weekly cover page at the top of the blog isn't even current.

Is everyone too busy getting the City Weekly on the newsstands to update the blog?

Duh, state wrestling was this weekend, and of course that's what was keeping everyone occupied. Haven't you all learned this now is all about the mat(t)s - wrestling and Perrault.

Anonymous said...

I heard Perrault is a finalist to be the Ralston Middle School play by play man.

Anonymous said...

I heard that too. But I also heard he got beat out by a clarinet playing marble collecting pimpled faced geek named Travis.

Anonymous said...

Is Ted Brockman back...? Hmmm. Check out the Omaha News Blogspot. Please say it is so...............

Ho Hum

Anonymous said...

6:22 am - Ah, the state wrestling tournament!!!

Do you suppose that will be the cover story of next week's City Weekly?

Anonymous said...

That rumor is almost accurate. He got a better offer from Kiewit Middle School that includes all the Raisinettes he can eat.

Anonymous said...

Those aren't Raisinettes. Had to do SOMETHING with the rabbit droppings my bunny left in his cage.

I have been unable to get Omaha.Com to come up all morning. What a great website.

Anonymous said...

C'mon folks....I know you're out there...I can hear you freezing.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe they haven't had an entry on the ball park coverage. It is the biggest local political story of the year and this blog is silent.

I'll get it going. Matt Perrault thinks we need two stadiums. Discuss.

Anonymous said...

Matt Perrault needs to stop thinking. He's not very good at it.

Anonymous said...

Don't worry, I am sure there will be some new Todd n Tyler news coming soon. Who cares about stadiums?

Anonymous said...

Is Matt Perrault still gay?

Anonymous said...

always has been, always will be

Anonymous said...

(crickets chirping)

Anonymous said...

Yup, he's still attending all the meetings.

Anonymous said...

Yes. He still comes to the gay meetings. Sits in the corner all by himself. Nobody talks to him. Kinda sad.

Anonymous said...

How come I didn't know about the gay Meetings? Oh Yeah I'm Not Gay...

Anonymous said...

Can we start the wrestling talk again, or has angry wrestling guy hung up his singlet for the season? Maybe now we can focus on Perrault's effect on the WWE, real wrestling.

Anonymous said...

Why don't we build three stadiums (CWS, Creighton and Royals)?

Are Jim and Sean stuck under Trav, Todd and Tyler's desks??

Anonymous said...

Angry wrestling guy is still around. The high school wrestling season may be over, but college wrestling is still going strong. So, no, the singlet hasn't been hung up for the season.

If y'all want to talk about that fakey WWE stuff, help yourself... I don't listen to Perrault, but if his ratings are any indication, he probably has zero effect on WWE. Unless he's emailing them with script ideas.

If WWE ever came to town, that might actually qualify as a legitimate posting to this blog that's supposed to be focused on local media. Until then, there are probably better topics to discuss than the WWE pretenders - grown men who wear their undies on the outside of their clothes and spend more time bleaching, shaving, and waxing themselves than nearly all women do.

Wouldn't it be nice if we'd get a new post or two about the local media?

We not fake, WWE real and Perrault will be next Vince McMahon. Stop boring us with singlet stuff. WWE will be in Omaha May 18 at Qwest Center and will draw bigger crowds than other wrestling tournament that was at buidling. Ugh.

Remember, pro wrestling is not fake, its staged.

A little off topic, Guys... I have a question. Two days ago I discovered this site:

They say you can play online Fight Night game tournaments on any console for cash... had anyone tried that before? Looks like a cool idea...
Are there any other sites where you can play sports games for real moneys? I Googled and found only Bringit.com and Worldgaming.com but it looks these guys don't specialize in sport gamez. Any suggestions?
