Matt Perrault Fires Back At Jim Rose

Matt Perrault, courtesy of BigSports590.comKXSP (590 AM) afternoon sports talk show host Matt Perrault spent time Thursday responding to the article published in this week's Media Watch column in the latest edition of the Omaha City Weekly.

During the 3 p.m. hour of "The Big Show," Perrault said he "doesn't really like Jim Rose," and shared with listeners the story of a lunch the two had at the Ironwood Country Club a few weeks after Perrault arrived in Omaha in April of 2005.

"I remember calling my ex-girlfriend right after that and I said, 'I've just had the most ridiculous lunch with the most pretentious man I've ever met in my life,'" Perrault said. "From that moment on, I just (said) Jim Rose and I will not get along."

Perrault said he has not spoken to Rose recently, but the two have crossed paths - including once during "a funny night" at a bar in Downtown Omaha.

"It was literally like 'Anchorman' where you had all the KFAB people on one side and all the Big Sports 590 people on the other," he said. "I felt like we were going to have a brawl."

Perrault took issue with Rose's assertion that the former Husker football play-by-play man has received more than 3,000 e-mails of support and that "The Big Show" has not received 3,000 e-mails since it debuted nearly three years ago.

"I probably get a thousand e-mails in a week," Perrault said. "Why would you even try to crack back on a dumb statement like that? There's no need for that. It makes you look stupid."

Although he didn't elaborate on his sources, Perrault stuck to his story that Greg Sharpe will be the new play-by-play voice of the Nebraska football team.

"We can all start fresh," he said. "Callahan's gone. Pederson's gone and Jim Rose is gone. It's a win, win, win for everyone."

Big show Co-host Travis Justice joined Perrault later on Thursday's show and called Rose's statement about not knowing Bo Pelini's wife, Mary Pat, a lie. But he was also quick to say that it wasn't really an issue.

"That's a lie because I watched him go in and say hi (at the press conference to announce Pelini's hiring as head coach)," Justice said. "I don't care if he went in to say hi. Keep in mind that there's a relationship there between those two. During Bo's time as head coach the first time around, Jim was the voice there. Jim hosted the TV show. Jim was on the road with them down at the Alamo Bowl."

Justice said he likes Rose and has never had a problem with him.

"Sometimes you (referring to Perrault) and I get mixed up," Justice said. "I don't care what you think about Jim. But I've known him for the 14 years that I've been here. I've never had a problem with him. I like Jim. Every time that we see each other we say hi and have some conversation. I didn't think I attacked him, personally."

Matt Perrault probably does get a thousand emails a week.

He just needs a good email spam filter is all...That'll get you back down to the couple of dozen that actually pertain to you.

Anonymous said...

Who the hell cares? It's a non-issue.

Anonymous said...

Look at the 3 people involved in this "story". Do any of them have an ounce of credibility in this market? Sounds like the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Anonymous said...

Rose has given me little reason to doubt him. The other 2 have ZERO credibility.

Anonymous said...

The problem with Perrault is that he uses his best guess instead of actual facts. But he thinks he can get away with it because he firmly attests that he is not a "journalist." With that, he attempts to absolve himself of any and all responsibility for everything he says, whether it be right or wrong.

He needs to realize that whether he considers himself a "journalist" or not, there are consequences for his words. From his Rasmussen rumors when Altman left, to now this Jim Rose situation, he has carelessly thrown out rumor and innuendo without pausing to think that people are actually listening... people who actually know the facts. Unfortunately, the subjects of his rumors don't have their own radio shows, so they're forced to defend themselves on blogs like this one.

Perrault needs to understand that people will take what he says as gospel, for the simple fact that it is emanating from the airwaves.

It isn't surprising that Justice has jumped on board, considering he went with the Callahan rumor on the 10pm news (he reported that Callahan had been asked to resign, which has been refuted by everyone involved). You'd think that a guy who's been in the business (and the market) for so long would have a better grasp of journalistic ethics.

It's better to be last and right, than first and wrong.

And all too often, they are the latter.

Anonymous said...

This is too funny! All three are like little children mouthing back and forth on a playground. There probably is some merit to the rumor that Rose was trying to get his job back. The guy lied about not knowing Mary Pat. He was there at the press conference and said "hello" to her for crying out loud. I was there to see it.

None of them have an ounce of credibility. Not Rose, not Perrault, not Justice.

No to defend Perrault, but the man is pure entertainment. He mouths half truths just like Rush Limbaugh mouths half truths. It isn't any different. Take everything that is said with a grain of salt.

Anonymous said...

Is this cyberbullying?

Anonymous said...

No, it won't be a win-win situation until Mr. Perrault is fired. He can take his little no-talent Travis Justice AND that dweeb of a nemesis of his, Jim Rose, with him. This kind of juvenile programming belongs in a market more fitting of these buffoons' talent...some place like North Platte.

Anonymous said...

And Mr. Perrault wonders why he can't get a job at some big East Coast market...

According to 10:15's crappy logic, I know everyone I have said "hi" to. I don't doubt he said hi. It is not too hard to know it is Bo's wife when she is standing next to him, with their kids. Doesn't mean he would know her if he saw her on the street.

Anonymous said...

I'm certain Rose could identify Mary Pat because he was at the Dec. 2 press conference standing along one of the back walls in his faux NU letter jacket.

That's right, a fake letter jacket.

He also was one of the last people to wander out when it was all done. Two words - hanger-on. No idea why he needed to be there; I thought he was burned out. Maybe he thought somebody there would know the names of his kids' teachers.

Apparently the ego is bigger than ever. Thank goodness he no longer is broadcasting games. Perrault may be gay and Trav a tool, but (gulp, I can't believe I'm typing this), they're probably more right than anyone wants to admit.

After that comment about not being able to ID Mrs. Pelini, it's obvious he's side-stepping the truth, most likely not for the first time. It's the way someone that self-absorbed works.

Anonymous said...

Holy crap, Perrault got one right. His first impression after that lunch could not be a more accurate assessment of whom he'd just dined with.

Wow, my grammar was gooder on that... oh crap, there me go again.

Anonymous said...

I don't listen to Matt's show. But I did listen to the podcast. I would turn on the radio today, but then Matt would be able to say he's getting more listeners. So I won't.

Anonymous said...

Matt opened today's show by saying he has a fun show for today and added that he doesn't say that very often.

I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Hello Pot, I'm Kettle glad to know you.

The Perrault and JR, two peas in an ugly pod.

Anonymous said...

Oh boy...first the Windrum-Poisson catfight and now Perrault and Rose in a catfight...this is blogger heaven!

Anonymous said...

I would be happier if he opened by saying he no longer had a show.

Anonymous said...

maybe Matt and Jim were lovers, broke up, and are airing their dirty laundry on the air and in cyberspace...and T Daddy Justice is in it because Lil Cub Matt is his boy toy. Ah, love.

Horatio Caine nailed it. Rose is a joke and a horrible announcer. Perrault can be annoying, but he is better than Rose.

Maybe they should all just don some singlets and have it out on the wrestling mat...like the real men that they pretend to be.....

somebody calling themselves "omajbg1" posted a comment on the o.mediablog basically saying that Journal is going to be firing people at 590 and km3. I don't know if he/she is talking out their ass, but it sounds like someone in management making a comment. I just don't see them letting Travis Justice go because they'd be without a well-known sportscaster and commentator.

Anonymous said...

They could also do a tag-team match: Matt and Trav vs. Jim and Adrian.

Let's hope JBS is serious about cutting the dead wood at BS590. And say what you want about Rose, at least he doesn't make an ass of himself every time his mic is open. Perrault can't HELP but do it...

I heard a rumor that Matt applied for the Husker PBP gig and Matt thinks Rose bad mouthed him.

Sorry, but I must politely disagree. Have you ever tried to endure one of Rosie's broadcasts? You're better off being where Borat ended up during the newd fight in his movie.

Hermie from Rudolph (a.k.a. Rosie) and his self-righteous, squeaky, nails-on-the-chalkboard voice that goes up several octaves on 7-yard gains is enough to make a buzzard puke.

Then the constant I'm-smarmier-than-you references to high school nicknames and "look at me I've memorized the media guide" quoting of information someone else has already spewed/written induces douche chills.

If there's anyone more self-righteous, self-absorbed and pious than Rosie (not withstanding Perrault for all of you who are ready to type the obvious answer) thankfully he hasn't reached these airwaves.

Ever tried listening to him ask a coach a question in the post game? After a two-minute statement that includes throwing around terms like 2-gaps and Tea-Bagged, maybe some words come out that possibly kinda resemble a question.

Oh, and for those of you who say, "Boy, for someone who can't stand him, you sure listen to him and know how he talks," don't even. Anybody who wanted to listen to games for the past six seasons (sans the three best in that span at the end of the '07 season) HAD NO CHOICE TO LISTEN because of Paul Arrongant dumping Warren Swain for Rosie.

Ladies and gentlemen of the village, I present you with another carcass. Commence ravaging.

Losing one's job is a terrible ordeal to experience, so I don't wish Matt Perrault or Travis Justice to be fired. However, I would like to see them find other employment so we don't have to hear or see them on the air. Omaha may be market #75 (TV), but there's too big of a potential audience to settle for the mediocre (at best) talents of Justice and Perrault.

Jim Rose would do well to resign from KFAB as well because he ISN'T good at what he does, and it always sounds like he's whining. He's even worse than TJ and MP.

As usual...well thought out and to the point. One of the most intelligent items I've read on this blog.

Axel, I wish I had the time and lack of life to write that long an entry on a blog, any blog....especially on such a lame, over hyped topic.

Anonymous said...

Now Which one is Gay Matt, Travis Or Rose....?

Anonymous said...

anonymous 2:28pm: and yet you just comment on this topic.

Anonymous said...

2:28 - It probably took Axel less time to write that post than it took you to read all the posts. If that's the best you've got, save the keystrokes and move on.

Anonymous said...

MP needs to stop using the word "literally." Or get a dictionary.

Anonymous said...

This is just a classic manufactured controversy. The majority of the radio audience doesn't care anymore, so all of these gasbags need something to remind everyone they're on the air.

Anonymous said...

Jim Rose argues with Gary Sadlemyer every morning, calling him "Saddlier" and is the authority on everything.

I could not follow what was going on in the football game with his play by play.

I hope he quits KFAB and spends more "time with his family" so we don't have to listen to him any more.

Anonymous said...

I never thought i would say this, but i only hope there comes a day when there's no longer "Justice" in the world and nothing "Matt"ers.

Anonymous said...

Having been around Justice several times and running across others who know him, I can tell you that he is the biggest ass in Omaha TV sports with Matt Schtick a distant second.....but gaining.

Perrault seems to be a lost cause. From his rumor mongering with NU football, Altman and Rasmussen, and the idiotic statements he made about Creighton basketball being more important than coverage of the Westroads shooting, I DO NOT BELIEVE HIM and I feel that he is looking for attention...ANY KIND OF ATTENTION!

Anonymous said...

7:22 -

Travis I'll agree with you... but Shick is one of the nicest, most caring television personalities you'll ever meet. I met him a short while back and he was very generous with his time. You'd be in the minority in your opinion. Plus, from what I gather he's very well-respected in the business.

As for Perrault, I won't argue with you on any point. It's just too bad there isn't any accountability from Journal's standpoint.

oh well... I guess that's what these blogs are for.

Anonymous said...

To the "Matt Perrault is Gay" freak: he does kinda look like Stella, doesn't he? A little more hair and maybe a bit rounder face, though.

If you squint a little, you can imagine him emcee-ing a drag show... in full drag himself, of course...

Anonymous said...

It is kind of silly to make such a big deal out of a 30 second discussion by Justice and Perrault that was heard by probably 100 people.
Then again it is nice to have new stuff on this blog. Since Weide didn't put this up for a week he must have been struggling with even posting it.
The biggest laugh of all of this is Perrault calling anyone else "pretentious". Now that is funny!

Matt Schick is one of the most genuinely nice people I've ever been in contact with.

Not to get into too much detail, but when somebody goes out of his way to help some anonymous nobody who emails his blog...Then that tells you a lot about his character.

I think he just sometimes rubs people the wrong way because he has this sense of humor that is slightly out-of-phase with the norm.

But I also think he's one of the few sports personalities in the city who actually puts some effort into his work. I hope his station appreciates him

(end testimonial)

Quote: "I think he just sometimes rubs people the wrong way because he has this sense of humor that is slightly out-of-phase with the norm."

I am the one who commented about Schick being second on the list. THAT above is exactly the reason why I said that. I have run into him twice at the Qwest and that is what I had noticed. It was like the TV Matt carried over into real life. I guess his sarcasm rubs me the wrong way.

Anonymous said...

I can personally attest that Matt Schick is a VERY nice, decent person. Sure, he has a sarcastic wit about him, but that's just his sense of humor. I think his style of sports reporting is refreshing for this market. Some folks prefer the old school, straight-forward approach, and that's fine. Schick has fun with it.

Anonymous said...

1:59am -

"Ran into him twice"? Did you have a "conversation" and actually "interract" with him? That's how I'd draw an informed opinion.

As for this blog, all the negativity is ridiculous. The authors are just asking for it with some of these topics... Perrault and Justice vs. Rose? Sheesh.

Apparently all of you chilling since the Omaha TV News Blog have found a home.
None of these three people are worth this much time. However, I'm sure they all thank you because you are bringing their radio shows more pub than they've ever had at one time.
Um, 4:15 pm (today) why wouldn't Unsportsmanlike Conduct have hosts and sub-hosts from an ABC station? They are in a round-about way a part of the same company. And did someone else bring that up that I missed? Because I don't think it has anything to do with A) the three main people in the original post and B) Schick's personality (for the record, he's a friend of a friend, so I'm on his side...although he has no idea who I am).
I really hope there will be a 590 vs KFAB rumble. I would offer coins from my change cup to watch.

Anonymous said...

8:29 pm.....the point of 4:15's post was to say that of course 1620 listeners are going to be partial to a guy who subs in as host on that show.

Anonymous said...

To 3:37 pm Gay Matt: No burr in my britches.

It's just a fact that a bunch of steroid-infused middle-aged men bouncing each other around while sticking to a script is... fake. Entertainment, but fake. Not even close to being a sport.

College and Olympic wrestling is the real stuff, recognized as an athletic sport worldwide.

If you're into watching super-steroided men flexing their muscles while wearing spandex undies and going *GRRR*, all the more power to you. Enjoy. No hard feelings.

I'll stick with the real sport.

P.S. My friend Gay Steve would be more than happy to reinact that scene from Borat with you... you know, where Borat's head ends up in a very odorous, sweaty place? Of course, you'd get to play Borat. *GRIN*

Well, actually REAL wrestling is more about keeping the other guy from pinning you... which means you want to keep from being underneath him and his ass... what you're thinking of is the game called "GRAB ASS" - which is an equal opportunity sport usually played with one's honey (gay or straight).

Maybe it's time to ask the question "If y'all think wresting is so gay, then why are more and more women taking it up?" Don't believe me?
