Yes, Sean, thanks! It's nice to see that you have a moral compass.

Anonymous said...

moral compass? last time I checked, the only moral thing about that dimwit is his two-faced, split personality, half weide and half brockman!

Anonymous said...

So, I guess that means all your petty, childish attacks on anything related to WOWT will 'not be tolerated'.
Good thing Mr. Minge seems to be reigning things in.

Anonymous said...

I read some of the comments earlier in the week and I agree some were very innappropriate and downright mean! Kudos.

Sean Weide is not Ted Brockman.

Where on this page has Sean bashed WOWT? I'm not seeing it anywhere on this page. I'm sensing that someone has a persecution complex.

Anonymous said...

Newbee, obviously.

To Anonymous 9/25 @ 5pm

I don't see anywhere that Sean has taken shots at WOWT. Any shots at WOWT come from the reader's comments and many of them are from me. So, Tracy, Mike, John, or whoever this is, once again you have shown so clearly why you suck.

Seriously, your demographic is made up of people who voted for Grover Cleveland and think that the Westroads is out in the sticks. These are people who probably don't even know Omaha has these other new fangled color TV stations now. So, I suppose you can still suck and keep that part of the market. Until the staff is revamped and accuracy becomes important, you will continue your sucky ways.

Does this mean we have to leave Amanda alone? Dang....

6:49 AM:

Now that was an awesome rant. I've been reading this post for about a year and from what I can see, Sean gives equal time to all the stations. WOWT people need to stop being so darned sensitive to everything. Geez...you're number one; what are you so fearful of?

Anonymous said...

Oh man, I could do a 20 page dissertation on how WOWT is single-handedly bringing down the IQ of the entire city of Omaha. That station is absolutely dreadful. I never watch it live, just on occasion on that 24 hour Cox channel.

I seriously have begun to think WOWT stands for "Where's Our Whiners Today". Their "Six on your Side" segments have become downright embarrassing. Some of the cry-babies they find to run stories on. Most hilarious was the guy who was upset because the church next door cut down a tree that they had every right to cut down.

I mean seriously, why do they choose to run such stupid, pointless stories?

Anonymous said...

I thought Sean retired and Jim Minge runns the blog? Some people seem to be confused....maybe it's me.

Anonymous said...

I'm not confused..I'm STONED

Anonymous said...

Maybe if they put Amanda on WOWT their crediblility would rise dramatically. She is amazing and would destroy Tracy Madden as an anchor!

Anonymous said...

That's what I tried to say on the other post....and people twisted it all out of proportion. But there's no need for anyone to detroy anyone else. We're all one big happy family...Husker Fans.

The only thing Meuller would destroy" is WOWT's credibility.

Oops... that was not relevant to the topic and inappropriate.

9:26 A.M. and 6:49 A.M.

Before you take shots at WOWT, look at the news product of the other TV stations around town. I don't find anything better. To say that accuracy isn't important to WOWT, is obsurd! Give me a break! KETV and Action 3 are the most inaccurate when it comes to facts and telling both sides of the story.

The Omaha Police Department and other local agencies hate KETV, specifically because of many of the decisions they've made to inform the public about deaths before the next of kin and other family members have been notified.
Example: The Bellevue children who died in the tragic apartment fire this Summer. KETV released the names of the victims before their fathers could be notified. WOWT DID NOT.

KETV has consistently crossed the line when it comes to ethics and morals. Their news coverage of the Jessica O'grady case and the Amber Harris Case contained a pre-determined bias, convicting Chris Edwards of the crime and destroying his right to a fair trial.

dingbat and anonymous 6:49 A.M. I don't know who you guys think you are, but for the love of GOD, please get your facts straight. You are misinformed about the Omaha market in terms of demographics and audience ratings. WOWT has proven time and time again, they're the place to turn to for the most accurate news product in town.

6:49 A.M. "sucky" is NOT a word. And until you can learn to write with words that exist in the dictionary, please keep your mouth SHUT! All of your comments are mindless and bear no sense to reality and what the demographics of this market make up. Dingbat, I could do a dissertation on KETV, I would run out of paper, and my pages would be clumped together resembling a dictionary. Grow up! it seems as if you are doing most of the "whinning" -- you call people cry-babies, anyone who supports the crap that flies out of channel 7 on a daily basis and whines about how WOWT is always on the top should be labeled "cry-babies" -- grow up and get a life!

I rest my case.

Anonymous said...

I've seen the demos...in extreme detail. WOWT has an OLD audience and getting older every book.
The cops (OPD that is) like WOWT because they copy and paste PIO press releases into their scripts and read them over a map graphic. KE will have great scene video (very often exclusive) and they talk to more witnesses at a crime scene than the police do.

The fact is KE is just plain better in almost every way than
WOWT.

REST YOUR CASE ON THAT.

7:05 -- You are wrong.
KETV will never and has never released names until they have been cleared by OPD. If OPD dropped the ball that's their problem, not ours. You say OPD hates us. I say they hate the fact we do our job and don't let the PIO do our job for us. We go out of our way to bring you all sides of the story. That's why we have the "Big Story" and go beyond the quick story at the top of the newscast. It sometimes takes longer to get all sides across. It sounds like someone at WOWT is frustrated and upset that folks outside the business are finally figuring out that Six is a fraud.

Signed,
i love news

7:05 PM...

First of all, I made no mention of KETV in my statements. So I can't imagine how you can automatically jump to the conclusion that I think KETV is a better news station. You might want to read and consider a person's statements before you just fly off the handle and tell them to "get a life". However, since WOWT is the worst, every other station, by default, would have to be better.

WOWT is almost always lagging behind when it comes to news coverage. At this very moment, WOWT is reporting on a single shooting last night at 12th & G Streets. While KETV and KMTV are reporting that there was also a second shooting, at the same location, only an hour later. You'd think if they have such a wonderful relationship with the police, that they'd be aware of such events. Not only that, but WOWT consistently reports on items that are not newsworthy! Consider my previous statements about the guy who was upset because a church cut down trees on own that they owned. Since when is somebody cutting down a tree on their own property news?? I just sat there in disbelief and prayed that nobody from out of town watched that newscast because they would see the people in this town as absolute hicks and idiots.

Oh and technical glitches? Let me count the ways. A perfect example: On a recent newscast a couple weeks ago, Tracy Madden, sat there trying to introduce a story. I swear it went something like this: "Here's the story from Brian Mastre (long pause) Okay, I'm told we don't have that package ready (another pause). Wait. I'm told that package is now ready (another pause) Okay, I guess we'll have that package a little later in the newscast".

Then Tracy, bless her heart, sent it to the weather center: "But I do see Jim Flowers. Jim...Help a sister out!". I did, however, appreciate her ability to laugh at the sorry situation.

So if you wish to go ahead and blindly support such a poor product, go right ahead. But don't insult those of us who don't have the same opinion.

It's so funny to see the "I've seen the demographics" card played! One can spin ratings book numbers in so many ways it's ridiculous. That's why one station in town, lets call them station "E", continously runs promos touting themselves as the 'most watched station' in HUGE letters - then in mircoscopic type at the bottom of the screen, "among women 12-16, July 2007". Guess if you tell the public a sow's ear is a silk purse enough times they'll eventually believe it, right? Well, don't break that arm patting yourselves on the back!
Everybody, "in the biz" in this town knows the station which religiously toes the "if it bleeds it leads" mantra ( see scanner-chaser in the media dictionary ). If it's brought them some success with viewers, they will stick with that formula, right? No one's better at standing on a dark street corner at 6:00 AM letting all of Omaha know that a shooting occured here 3 hours ago that affected 0.01% of the actual population.
Perhaps there's just a segment of viewers in town that prefer NOT to watch that brand of news coverage, "as we learned first" or "as we told you about at 5". Guess that's why no one gets 100% of the viewership.
There are specific ways to fill a newscast. How you fill it speaks volumes!
I haven't seen ANY Tom Brokaws in this market lately. Some folks, be it 3, 6, 7, 42 or NETV, would be best served to be glad they have a job in TV, turn their daily pkgs/VOs/SOTs & cash their paychecks. There are enough viewers for each station in town. The only ones who REALLY need those ratings are the sales people!

Dear "Rest My Case" AKA Anonymous WOWT Employee

I actually have one helluva vocabulary and happen to know that 'sucky' is in the urban dictionary. Again, I understand your demographic is composed of white folk with blue hair, so I do not expect you to know such things exist.

It is not surprising that OPD prefers your station. You whore for them at every turn. I mean, why bother checking a story out for yourself when the police so neatly prepare a report for you to read.

I will give you this. You mastered the scare tactic story line many years ago. You are the best at that. Now you simply use it over and over to keep the blue hairs tuning in. Why bother looking at all aspects of the story when you can simply go with the side that will scare your audience and ground that out for all it is worth.

I am not a news person. I am simply a life long resident who knows this town well and knows hack news when he sees it.

Someone at the big "W" must be a bit sensitive, as they don't want to hear anything bad about their newscast. Please refer to THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES.

KETV at least gives us "10 minutes of loal news" and doesn't turn its main focus to national news.

It is because of this that they are number one. They have shown that they are us and we are them. Go channel six and the rest of you boo-birds can just shut the tv off.

Anonymous said...

Why, while reading this post, do I feel like I walked back into Junior High?????

Anonymous said...

After reading some of the comments about OPD and their relationship with the local stations, I became more amused by the minute.

I was one of those PIO's. I can tell you that all of the stations employed some true professionals. Reporters and news directors alike, who went the extra mile to make sure their news packages were accurate, fair and objective. However, as a whole, WOWT was the most professional of the four stations and worked hard on building the trust with OPD. And no, they didn't just repeat our news releases. They just made sure that when we presented the facts, they, in turn, presented those facts without twisting it to their own ratings grabbing agenda. If we looked bad, it was because we had it coming. We learned and moved on.

There was just too much tabloid journalism with the other two stations. Having the king of theatrics, James Martin Davis, on speed dial is never a great idea for presenting fair and balanced news to the viewers.

Just my opinion.

Anonymous said...

Another fine example of WOWT's utter foolishness. On their website they have a story with the headline:

"Northwest Football Collapses During Game"

I expected it to be a Six On My Side investigation as to why a football deflated.

But it was actually about a player who was rushed to the hospital during the game. I mean, for crying out loud, they can't do a simple headline right!

Anonymous said...

Now that was just sucky.

Anonymous said...

I am not going to attack or applaud 6,7,3, or 42.

I will say this: from my experience in seven different TV markets: The stations with the "ambulance chasing, live local latebreaking, fear mongering, in your face, championing themselves for being first on the scene" mantra..are consistently in last place ratings wise.

While the community oriented station, with a calm, consistent, and almost boring newscast presented by a team that has been around the longest, is well liked, and almost seems like part of your family ...usually is the 800lb gorilla in the market.

I know viewer habit is the one of the biggest factors in achieving ratings. But the "in your face" style of journalism only drives away news viewership.

Perhaps, my seven market(some smaller, some larger than Omaha)sample may not representative enough.

These news directors who push sensatioinalism just don't get it! They rely too much on flawed research than just plain common sense. just my 2 cents!

Anonymous said...

11:27:

That was the most poignant post on this matter. You are exactly correct in your assumptions. WOWT has had the longest most consistent group of individuals on television and I believe that this is what draws viewers to them. The viewers that watch feel that these people are a part of their community; they know the community.

It's like old neighbors in the viewer neighborhood. People feel that they know them; whereas the newer, less familiar faces are like new neighbors. We are getting to know them, but don't want to get too close because they could be gone at any minute.

I think this is why John Knicely, Dave Webber, Jim Flowers, John Chapman and a host of others on Channel Six have remained at a consistent number one.

I also do not work in television and this was my two cents as well.

Anonymous said...

Won't you be my neighbor? Thank you Mr. Rogers.

Anonymous said...

Give me a break! You all take shots at the big six but you fail to recognize the truth! take for example the posting by one of the former PIO's. It's clearly evident that the OPD and surrounding agencies appreciate the work of WOWT. Channel 6 has never once exaggerated the truth or twisted it in a way that involved a pre-determined bias in their news coverage.

If you look at the other three television stations in this market, you'll see some great, high-quality work, by some very talented and well-liked individuals both on air and off air, but what you won't see is the trust or appreciation.

Ratings aside, WOWT, by far, is the most professional and honest news organization in this market.
I watched all four television stations throughout the years, and I can tell you, nobody presents the news better than WOWT.

Anonymous said...

Sux-on-your-side remains in first place only to due the continuing presence of what I call the "Husker Attitude". Stick to what you're used to, even if it's stale, boring, and outdated. Don't ever dare to progress, be different, or Osborne forbid be forward thinking. And lastly..anyone that doesn't see it your way....why, that's just un-American...or should I say un-Husker like.

Anonymous said...

That may be, 6:45. But it's business. And if keeping it stale keeps the ratings high and the ad dollars coming in, you can count on more stale.

Anonymous said...

I'm just waiting to see how much lower 3 can go in the ratings. I don't think stories like the one they're promoting on their site for Monday titled, "Are you safe anywhere?" with a picture of someone pulling a gun out of their coat is going to drive viewers to their already sinking newscast.

Interesting how this site about local news reported zero information about the July ratings, especially 3's dramatic drop with its new format. I realize it's the least important of the ratings, but I think it was newsworthy on a site supposedly about the local broadcast industry.

Anonymous said...

News is entertainment. I don't think the critics have figured that out yet. According to these posts even the people who disagree with the content have seen it. Which means you sat through the commercial breaks so you could complain about it on the internets and webs and such.

Anonymous said...

It must suck to work at a last place station. Management will continue to mindfuck its employees with changes until "we get it right". Meanwhile, the station that really does suck continues to dominate because viewers are comfortable with the same old, same old. Go Sucks!

Anonymous said...

Or maybe they just like it because it provides a certain sense of stability in a world of uncertainty.

Anonymous said...

But 7:54, what you see as "suck" business managers see as a stable source of income. The managers at the stations you see as old and tired would be insane to change if that old and tired format still delivers viewers and ratings. Which it does. Call it what you want. It still pays the bills. And that's what this is about. Don't forget for a minute - tv news is a business first. And if it doesn't make money, it doesn't make air. It's capitalism, folks. Not too hard to figure out.

Anonymous said...

7:12 AM

Exactly! And that's why Six is number one. They are staying with a tried and true formula and apparently it works. Deal with it.

Anonymous said...

What...no more comments from the peanut gallery?

I don't have any issue with WOWT being #1...Provided they put the slightest bit of effort into it every once in a while.

I mean, I would think its not too much to ask.

Anonymous said...

10:55 AM:

I agree with that assessment. It would be nice if they put a bit more effort into their newscasts and covered a bit more of the local scene rather than three or four minutes of it and then throwing directly to National News. It appeared that for a time they were doing this and then they fell back into the old crutch of national news again.

WOWT'ers don't get me wrong; I would much rather watch you guys than the other three, but sometimes I just have to switch because they are covering more local news. Just my uneducated opinion on the matter and I am not trying to tear you down; I am just trying to understand why you do this. Please weigh in and let me know. Thanks!

Anonymous said...

The chances that anyone of any merit in the media reads this blog are about nil, as there is not any serious debate about media here. There are only a bunch of numbskuls with an axe to grind that have no clue what it takes to put on a viable newscast. My case is rested. Let the attack dogs begin their impotent barking; no one of any substance will be listening. Audios.

Anonymous said...

I may not know how to produce a 30 minute news broadcast. But I do know how to spell and I do know how to proofread.

That gives me an edge over the folks at WOWT.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 10:55 AM about the local news.

Granted it's mainly shootings, car wrecks, and 'Blatt / casino talk but it is still LOCAL and I can relate to the stories even if I don't agree with the slant being reported.

I watch the channel with the most local news coverage. I too would like to see Six put more effort back into the local stories.

There are many other places to get the national or international news anytime if that is what I want to see.

"Adios"... as in "Go with God"
Lot of bile on here, it's sad.
Some people in the local media certainly read and post here. Hopefully they're not hurling insults.
Some quick thoughts on the local stations.
KETV has the best news product in the market, period. It's not that close, either.
WOWT is still doing great in ratings, but I would bet that when this market goes to meters (if that happens)KETV will blow by
KMTV is working hard to differentiate from the other stations, but has a long way to go.
KPTM does a good job, especially considering its parent company. One negative? That new set is just not working, at all. Not trying to be mean.. something constructive? There's no depth.. especially that cross shot in front of the anchors to the report spot in front of a plasma... needs a darker backround.. it's just one field of light... IMO.
Have fun, and try to make criticism something useful, something others can learn from.

Anonymous said...

7:51 AM:

That's a great point. Instead of bashing the news people and newscasts offer constructive criticisms by which the news stations in this city will hopefully take heed. If there is an issue with something; how would you fix it?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 7:51 Thoughtful post, but Ive heard this theory about a metered market changing the ratings. Possible scenario? Yes. Probable fantasy? Yes. There may be some tweaking but the old fashioned ratings books have trended pretty consistently over the years . The "metered market" theory is wishful thinking --kind of like Husker fans who think the Blackshirts will hold Missouri under 60 points and 700 yards.

Anonymous said...

8:17
I don't think I'm dealing with fantasy, my thoughts are based on how a "diary" works. You write what you remember, it doesn't necessarily jive with what you actually watched. Having the longest tenured team is a great boon in this type of situation, also, the Cox channel 1 situation can play into this recall as well.
I just happen to believe that those factors will be offset by the reality of who's watching what at 10pm... especially if ABC's primetime is doing as well as it is now compared to NBC.
BTW, not "wishful" thinking.. I don't work at 7.
Funny line about the Huskers, but I don't think it will be that bad... maybe 45 and 450.
