'Blowtorch of the Midwest' Flames Out On Fourth

Voorhees MySpace pageOmaha radio station KFAB (1110 AM), which affectionately refers to itself as the "blowtorch of the Midwest," turned over its 50,000-watt signal to unscreened callers Wednesday morning during the first hour of the "Scott Voorhees Show."

As Lee Greenwood's patriotic anthem "God Bless The USA" played continuously, listeners' calls to the station were aired unscreened for nearly 60 minutes.

Among them:

Hello, this is Steve Brown. Listen to me in this time slot beginning tomorrow.

To all the troops, this Bud's for you (sound of can opening).

This is Donna Baker and if you had not fired me, this would have never happened.

Uh, I was calling in about the refrigerator.

This is John Ewing. Please take time to walk through your neighborhood and make sure all your neighbors have paid their license plate taxes.

I hope nothing has happened to the station. I don't understand what is going on. I hope the people at KFAB are OK.

Is this the request line? I'd like to hear "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood. I haven't heard that song in a long time.

I'd like to recommend that people re-read the Declaration of Independence.

Can I get a pepperoni light on the sauce? And if you can spell out U-S-A with the pepperoni, that would be great.

Just before 10 a.m., Voorhees offered an explanation for the first hour, which he acknowledged was not well planned.

"I didn't expect to do this for an entire hour," he said. "I thought maybe we'd do it for 20 minutes."

He also made a point to mention who else played a part in the stunt, as if to spread the blame.

"I'm here, Lucy Chapman is here, Bronco is here, are so are some of the people from the other stations who work here," he said. "We've been in different modes of laughing, pounding our fists on the desk and rolling on the floor. Some (of your calls) were very tender. God bless you for realizing what this last hour of radio was supposed to be. Touching, funny and patriotic."

Pure genius! What better way to celebrate our freedom than to give listeners a bland canvas to say what they wanted to say. Classic radio!

Edit from last post...make that a "blank" canvas. It was radio's own version of a "message board".

If you can get people talking about your station on a holiday without hurting someone or threatening the license you have done something right.

Wish I would have heard it.

Actually, there may be a case for a complaint to the FCC. If you were listening about 9-40 or so. Should be interesting to follow if it results in any action against the station or scott.

Leave it to someone to complain. You knew it was going to happen!

What happened at "9-40 or so"?

Is anonymous 8:19 Scott himself?

Me thinks so.

Sounds like a good way to ditch work for an hour. Put the CD player on "repeat" and take off.

Really, if he had been in the building, you'd think it would have ended after the first prank call.

11:34 am: No I am not Scott, just an interested listener.....

It was not a real clear call because of the music, but somebody dropped the f-bomb a couple times and mentioned Tom Becka's name.

Scott Voorhees for Mayor !!!!

Why listen to something original when you could have been listening to the "best of Todd n' Tyler" and hear them talk about the time they got high, met these hot chicks, and hear them make fun of Travis and his hairy back. Oh wait, you already heard that show? Sorry.

And don't forget that you can also listen to the "best of matt perrault" this week, too!

Anonymous said...

There's a best of Matt Perault???????

Anonymous said...

Of course there is - they just replay that 10 minute segment over and over and over...

Anonymous said...

must be 10 min of silence

I always pictured Scott as thinner....

Actually, if someone used the f-bomb in connection with Tom Becka, then it might be cause for an FCC commendation. How does that guy hold a job? Even if he had something to say, his voice is so awful that he's impossible to listen to.

Some of these "calls" seem kinda funny? Why the beef Sean?

Anonymous said...

Off topic, but nowhere else to post it. Anyone else notice during KETV's lame story about the hot dog eating contest in New York they made constant reference to the term "tube steak"? Hmmm....

Anonymous said...

I did see the "tube-steak" reference as well. My wife and I did one of the Beavis and Butt-Head head turns and go "Uhhh...okay."

The "request line" one is awesome.

How Vorhees is still on the air after that stunt is beyond me.

Anonymous said...

Funny. Good one, Scott V.! Sounds like old Sean has a beef.

Anonymous said...

He should have a beef. Vorhees is just asking for an FCC fine. In fact, I'll make a complaint right now.

Anonymous said...

Where's the beef?????

Looks like someone has an axe to grind with Scott for some reason. Heard the show and listened to it again online and I have to say I still laughed the second time around. The funny thing is that Scott didn't even talk at all in the first hour. It was the callers making the comments. Obviously, some don't like KFAB listeners either.

As far as I can tell, Sean simply reported what happened. Sounds like somebody has a persecution complex.

Sounds like somebody has a prosecution complex.

Sounds like a missed opportunity for "Oh, Aaaaaadrian Fiala" to show up on the airwaves of Omaha's home of the Fuskers.

Gawd, how funny THAT would have been.

C'mon, Matt Perrault does this everyday.

I have a prostitution complex.

Better than have a Prostation complex.
