Public Chimes In With Comments on 'Big Boom'

By 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, more than 300 people had left a comment on the website of WOWT (Cox Channel 8) about the "big boom" that was heard throughout the Omaha metropolitan area around 11 a.m.

The loud noise is thought to have been a sonic boom from a military aircrraft. Several people posting on WOWT.com report that windows were broken and pictures knocked off walls. KETV (Cox Channel 9) captured the sound while shooting video on the Missouri River.

Other sites documenting people's experiences concerning the noise include: Omaha Forums, mavpuck.com, KETV.com, RadioReference.com and on a few blog topics listed at toptray.com.

  1. Officials confirmed late this afternoon that it was the overload of Matt's ego clashing with the ugly reality that his station, his show and his takes all suck.

Unfortunately, it had no effect on the quality -- or, better yet, lack thereof -- of local sports programming being offered by Big Snores 590.

  3. Too funny. I looked at these 300 comments. 285 of them pretty much said the same thing: "My windows rattled. My dog freaked out. I thought a car hit my house"

Leave it to the citizens of Omaha to get all worked up in a lather about a sonic boom.

  4. I could care less if there was a pilot having a little fun on his way to Sioux City. The 'excuse' that there was severe weather causing that plane to be at an excessive altitude is pure military-speak for "he fudged up, but we're not admitting anything".
Offutt pulled the "we didn't cause it" PR statement - but you knew who was flying through the airspace.
Just tell the media if it was nothing so they can tell the blue hairs it was nothing. The truth isn't THAT hard.....

  5. Poster one; what in the name of Matt Perrault does this story have to do with Big Sports 590?

  6. Anything that happens in Omaha, happens because of Matt Perrault. Just ask him. He literally saved Creighton basketball, created the Dodge Street overpass, made a lame child walk again, and caused the sonic boom yesterday.

  7. While the attempt to make Omahans look like hayseeds is appreciated, Dingbat, this one falls short. I daresay citizens of New York would be just as freaked out, if not more.

  8. Ah...there's nothing to worry about until you see a mushroom cloud.

  9. Now if I were in New York City and heard that loud booming sound. I might actually freak.

But when was the last time a terrorist targeted Omaha? I just don't think Southroads Mall is up there on Osama's big list.

  12. Timothy McVey's #2 choice for a bombing target was Omaha. I'd say he was a terrorist.

  14. Had Timothy McVeigh blown a building in Omaha...Trust me, there would still be dozens of outraged Omaha citizens, "This explosion woke up my baby and made my windows rattled. I demand accountability!"
