Julie Cornell Steps Down As Anchor At KETV

KETV-7 co-anchor Julie Cornell announced live on the air this morning that she is leaving the anchor desk at KETV. Brandi Petersen will replace Cornell when she leaves at the end of the month. Petersen will join co-anchor Rob McCartney.

Cornell, whose husband Bill Randby will remain as KETV’s chief meteorologist, began at KETV in 1992. She has been one of the station’s main co-anchors for the past 11 years after replacing longtime KETV anchor Carol Schrader.

Cornell published a story on KETV.com explaining that she wants to become a fulltime mom.

“This year, our twin girls, Madeline and Jocelyn, will start kindergarten,” Cornell wrote. “Our son, Will, begins second grade. I've worked the night shift for most of my 21 years in broadcasting, and it doesn't mesh with the school schedule.

“So at the end of July, after 11 years as a main anchor at KETV, I'll step away from the anchor desk, because I want to be with my children at night. I'll continue to work a very flexible part-time schedule here at channel 7, write weekly stories for Julie's Diary on the KETV Web site and write feature stories for the news, as I have for 16 years here in Omaha.

“Brandi Petersen will take over the anchor desk next to my buddy, Rob. She's my friend. She's smart, level-headed and hard-working. Brandi is one of the finest live reporters I've seen on air. She loves this community and she's a tremendous asset to our station.”

Congrats Brandi!

Julie is/was a fine anchor and was enjoyable to watch. I will miss that sexy little lip thing she does when the camera is about to fade away, as well as her smiling face. Brani does a nice job as an anchor as well, but looks to young to be with the distinguished Mr. McArtney - he is a class guy too.

I read Cornell's statement @ KETV.com...

She says:
"...Before I write a story, I sit down with the video and pour over pictures and sound..."

POUR, PORE
You pour sauces, gravies, etc, over your dinner, while pore means to study something--I hope she didn't damage something with an unnamed liquid substance!

Julie was not a pleasure to watch.. she was getting the fubar stuttttter going..

Brandi.. now that is one fine anchor!

Anonymous said...

I'd agree with Julie. Brandi brings some tremendous assets to the news reading. I like looking at them as much as possible.

Anonymous said...

brandi if flat, both as a reporter, an anchor, and as eye candy. NEXT!

Anonymous said...

Too bad she wasn't married to THE WEATHER AUTHORITY. Then her husband would not have to work any of those pesky odd hours when tornados hit Omaha.

Anonymous said...

Bill cuts out of work for an hour or so in the evenings after the 6pm newscast to watch their son play little league baseball, but I have never seen Julie do this. Maybe she is great in some other way.

On a different note, Brandi has a tiny noggin. Does she buy her hats at Kid Gap or something?

Congratulations to Julie on your brave decision...and thank you for helping to make Channel 7 the one decent station in Omaha to watch for local news.

Congratulations to Brandi Petersen on your upcoming promotion. Please stay personable and grounded and you will help Channel 7 to become even better. But be prepared for the venomous scrutiny of those who are jealous of your success. If you read this blog, you know what I mean.

Anonymous said...

Congrats, Julie. We will miss seeing you every day. But please, for the love of God, don't let them make your departure from the anchor desk a long, drawn-out, embarrassing fiasco like Channel 6 did when the got rid of, er, I mean "retired" Pat Persaud. You're much too classy for that--and so is KETV. If that were to happen, I would never watch again!

Anonymous said...

Does Matt Perault have nothing to say about all this? Well?!

Anonymous said...

I'm on hold with Perrault, I hear he's jealous and headed to this very blog to rant about it !

Anonymous said...

I am keeping Perrault busy at the moment -- he is, shall we say, servicing a couple of farm animals in his apartment right now.

He will, of course, deny having had anything to do with them. But the truth has already been documented...and the photos will be published online should he choose to deny it here.

Sincerely,

No doubt. That whole Pat Persaud thing was the most embarrassing thing WOWT ever did.

And considering their "accomplishments" in recent years, thats really quite a statement.

ps- does anybody have a link to the video of her announcing this? i missed it on sunday night.

Wow, this is really bad news for Omaha news. Cornell was fantastic. I'm not completely sold on Peterson. She doesn't have "it". The only person that has the "it" and will move on to a higher market successfully will be KM3s Kerri Stowell. Other than that it seems the last 10 years has been a dearth of talent coming through.
Losing Cornell really, really stinks.

Boy, the people at KMTV obviuosly have a lot of free time on their hands if they're posting here...then again, the quality of their newscasts SCREAMS that of the kind of ineptness that has employees posting anonymously on message boards rather than performing their journalistic tasks.

Losing Cornell really, really stinks.

I agree that losing Julie really, really stinks.

As far as Brandi not having "it", I think that has a lot to do with her voice. To me, she still sounds like a teenage cheerleader. I suspect, though, in time her voice and delivery will mature.

As an example, listen to Madonna's "Borderline" from the mid-1980's, by the time she did "Express Yourself" a few years later her voice had started to mature, by the late 1990's and the Austin Powers soundtrack days it had matured and hasn't changed much since.

Perrault is nothing without Travis, he dominates this market because he has such a true appreciation for all of the things that make Omaha great. It doesn't have to be all Huskers and Creighton and Royals with him.

He's not afraid to get his hands dirty and do the little things that might take a little more effort, be somewhat inconvenient to do and not just come from press releases other people put out. Plus, he never complains if things don't go his way every single time.

No one cares about his craft and doing all the little things without griping more than Travis.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Travis is a real workhorse.

Someone explain to me why we even need 3 minutes of sports on the local station when all they do is rerun highlights off the wire from national games we have all seen hours earlier on espn?

Anonymous said...

As far as hardest-working and most talented sports guys in Omaha media, the list would be as follows:

1. John Schuetz
2. Kevin Kugler
3. Ross Jernstrom
4. JJ Davis
5. Merlin Klaus
6. Matt Schick

Nobody else in Omaha sports media is really deserving of being mentioned on such a list. We can argue the order of the above names, but nobody outside those six are deserving of mention.

Or even better, retire Webber abd bring the Perrault to WOWT to get that train back on track. Flowers and Perrault, talk about your dream team!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Dream team??? Only if the dream is to be the biggest fraud in Omaha.

Anonymous said...

7:20 A piss poor weatherman telling the world that he is the second coming of forecasters in Omaha, and a sports host that doesn't know crap telling the world the same, that might work. It would definately fit into the WOWT marketing strategy.

Anonymous said...

Please spell check your posts prior to launch. 7:06 and 7:20, all great points, but the misspelled names and general excitement to get your posts out detracts from your points. Travis wouldn't approve, he's more thorough and never complains about anything he has to do.

Anonymous said...

8:54 - What do you expect when Schuetz and Perrault write their own posts?

Anonymous said...

Hey 7:06 - I'm sure it was an oversight, but other than leaving Travis off your list in the number one position, that list looks pretty good to me. I'm amazed no one in Sioux City or Des Moines has snatched up their native Iowan to do for them what he's done for KMTV.

If you want to post a revised list with Travis listed as number one, that would be swell.

Anonymous said...

One of Trav's career highlights had to have been when he was the sports director and KMTV didn't even half sports.

Nice work, buddy.

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty sure leaving Travis off the list was not an oversight, and for good reason...he's just not nearly as good as he like you to think he is.

Just for the record, I will not apologize.

I know I said I hate fat people on my show yesterday and, by extension, that means I hate you too Omaha because most of you are fat as well. I won't apologize for it. Have you seen fat people? They sweat and they may get some of that fluid on or next to me. I simply can't have that and it won't be tolerated. I can't have the little (or in this case the morbidly obese or minorly overweight) people touch me, even with their sweat.

I also won't apologize for saying that despite having a sucessful record label that the music scene sucks in Omaha. Look at you people. Of course it does. You are Omaha. I am Boston and only Boston has anything worth mentioning.

Ah, I can't wait to go home. No fat people and no bad indie music. Maybe if I click my heels three times and say "There's no place like Fenway!" maybe I'll be home.

Sincerely,

The Perrault

Anonymous said...

Hey Perrault,

Thanks for telling us about you not liking fat people. Nobody was listening to your show anyway, so feel free to post your daily updates and you could call it "Here's what everybody missed because you weren't listening to my show yesterday."

And let us know when you're moving back to Boston. Don't announce it on the air, though...because NOBODY IS LISTENING.

Anonymous said...

Perrault, there are many people who can't wait for you to go home. And, after those bullshit comments, the list will get

bigger. You'll have to wait for the full effect though because people will have to read it here, it's not like they heard you on the radio.

Anonymous said...

I think the time has come for The Perrault to replace Perrault on the air waves. His/her/its sarcasm is good, he/she/it obviously listens to Perrault so he/she/it will know what not to broadcast. Then maybe we can get more wrestling coverage.

Julie's departure has been in the works since at least the first of the year if not longer. This was a no-brainer decision. She's a mother and her kids are getting ready to start school. She could keep working this shift and see her kids for two hours a day or leave and be a stay at home mom. I'm sure Tracy Madden will have to make the same decision the next few years. Most Anchor/Moms get to this point sometime in their careers.

Jess -- don't know if you've had the pleasure of juggling a full-time career in the media field AND parenthood, but as someone who's been there and done that I can tell you that it is not easy.

Unlike most professions, the media business is not a 9-to-5 gig. Its hours vary tremendously from day to day and many times the job interferes on life. Some people can juggle it better than others, but there's a time when people like Julie come to the realization that the job is no longer worth the personal sacrifices and it comes time to pull the plug on the career and put that energy into parenthood.

I was in the media field for over two decades and spent many a night on the job when my child was growing up, and there were many nights where I missed events that a parent should be at because events and circumstances required my presence at the job. It took a long time for me to realize that the media biz, for all the success and pleasure it brought, was taking me away from what should have been my number one responsibility, and when I made the decision to leave the field it was not easy, but was the right one and I am deliriously happy working a 9-to-5 gig and spending more time with my child.

The anonymous mental midgets can opine about Cornell's decision, but as someone who's walked a mile in her shoes I applaud it and know she's going to enjoy her time with her kids so much more.

Media field or not is not the point really. And, yes I have had the pleasure of full time 13-14 hour days while being a Mom.

My point was, that if she was so concerned about missing out on their childhood why did she wait until they started school to do this ?

Some of the "mental midgets" you refer to are probably parents that work full time as well.

But, I can tell you that this mental midget has 6 kids, a husband, a job, and even a social life beyind this computer believe it or not.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is, don't bring me your high and mighty bullshit that is so much more important than mine just because your job title had media in it. Walk a mile in my shoes then we'll chat.

Life is all about choices ...or assholes, dammit now I can't remember the saying.

Of course they'll all be on Pajama Dance Party with you, right?

It's "anonymous" because I don't have a Google or Blogger account like most of you bottom-feeding vermin. So blow me.

P.S. That was kind of funny that Perrault got his ass handed to him at a punk concert though. And I still think Sean and Jim should cut you addicts off by taking away your drug (this blog).

I was watching Daybreak on Channel Six this morning. I got to wondering about Rachel Pierce. I knew she left for a station in Des Moines, but wondered what she would be doing. She's the main anchor for WOI-TV. AARRRGGHHH! What is this world coming too when Rachel Pierce becomes the main anchor for a TV station?!?! They must be really desperate!

Hey there, Dick, glad you asked about my whereabouts. I've pretty much been kicking back, watching the petty catfighting on the blog, and waiting for wrestling season to start this fall.

Since you asked...

I think Julie Cornell is a fine anchor. She'll be missed. (Best wishes to you, Julie and family!!) In the newscasts I've watched lately, Rob McCartney has been gone - leaving Julie and Brandy to anchor next to each other. I haven't seen an awkward moment between the two of them yet. That leads me to believe Julie is leaving because it's what she wants to do. (Besides, she's not really leaving - she's just changing assignments at the station.) And if Julie is being forced out of the main anchor position, both she and Brandi are professional enough that any ill will doesn't show through on the air. One way or another, you can't argue that both of these women have tons of class.

As far as the Perrault/Travis thing goes... *yawn*. I don't watch or listen to either of them. So I usually skip by those posts.

The Sleeves "horse rocking an ass" thing? Ugh, a waste of electricty to run my laptop.

And then there's Jess. Not sure what to make of her. From this blog we've learned she has 6 kids, a husband, and a very large vehicle used to tote them all around to view storm-damaged neighborhoods... but doesn't take time to help out the folks with storm damage.

And she seems to have plenty of time to blow on this blog second-guessing Julie and Bill's parenting decisions. In a way, second-guessing others' parenting decisions is a bit evil.

Since Jess opened herself up for comments when she gave her thoughts about Julie's commitment to parenting, here are five "Jess-based" examples of what I'm talking about when I say second-guessing others' parenting decisions is a bit evil:

(1) Shall we guess that when Jess takes her family to do fall school shopping, the kids run around the store wildly - screaming, running into people, messing up store displays... effectively serving to everyone in the vicinity as an advertisement for birth control?

(2) Shall we guess that if all six of the kids were conceived by her and hubby's repeated sexual exploits (i.e., not adopted, foster kids, or neices/nephews they're raising), then can we guess Jess is Catholic (the most prevalent religion that preaches against family planning / birth control)?

(3) If, from example (2)we assume that Jess and family are Catholic, then shall we assume that they're "cafeteria Catholics" (i.e., pick and choose which church teachings they follow)? As in, "can't use condoms", but forget about that "help your neighbor" stuff when it comes to storm-damaged neighborhoods.

(4) Shall we guess that if Jess and hubby continue to have kids, Jess and hubby won't be able to pay to college-educate all of them on their own. Hey, our tax dollars go to fund Pell grants, etc. Should we all look down on Jess for increasing our tax burden?

(5) Because of the above, must we conclude that Jess is not a good representative of the "wholesome family values" that should be embodied in a pajama party TV show featuring crop circles (whatever the heck that kind of show would be)?

Remember, as I clearly stated before, these are just examples of how second-guessing parenting decisions can seem cruel. So don't spam the blog with nastiness regarding this posting.

Instead, just imagine how Julie and Bill feel with all the parenting "tips" and second guessing pointed in their direction!!

'Nuff said.

Now, back to waiting for college wrestling season...

AWG (Angry Wrestling Guy),

An astute summarization of the situation at hand.

For the earlier posting about having "media" in the job description somehow making that job more important, you can be no further from the truth. People in the media should realize they are no more/less important than a person in any other profession, or a person who chooses not to enter or to leave the workforce.
Unfortunatlely, there are too many "media-types" perpetuating the stereotypical walk-with-a-swagger-feeling-you-have-an-undeniable-right-to-be-annoying-and-crass-without-regard-to-others'-feelings.

Julie's decision probably comes on the basis of two things:
1- The timing is right for her.
She's certainly proven herself as a competent professional and needs not make any apologies for her decision.
2- The timing is right for her family.
Transitioning to a part-time, non-evening work schedule makes the most sense when your children are entering school. As many (most) of you would realize, working that night schedule leaves you time to get your kids ready for school, take them to school, maybe see them at dinner, then kiss them on the head when they're sleeping after you get home. The kids need/deserve more.

Again, all of this crosses professional boundaries.
Media is not the darling of the world, however the reality remains that if you're on TV, the radio or the internet, or if you're in the newspaper, you will always be given some degree of "celebrity" status.

For better or worse.

Again, AWG, thank you for your observations.

Okay, Jess, your turn. Unless J-Dub has some new crop-circle embargos to share with us. Oops, can't share embargos.

Anonymous said...

I don't think the guy who started the thing about the media job was saying that media gigs are more important, just that their hours are whack compared to us 9-to-5'ers.

If a fire breaks out in the middle of the night, depending on where you're at some reporters will be on call and might be waken in the middle of the night to go on the job. Big events like the Von Maur slayings had reporters working long into the night for several days at a time.

All of that can take a toll on anybody after a while and he's not saying that makes their job any more important or special, just that it's different from what most of us do in our careers.

Sorry it took me so long to respond, just got back from the zoo…..did you know you can pay with food stamps there ?!?!? I tried to pay with a grant but they said no way.

Well AWG, if you hadn’t of said “Remember, as I clearly stated before, these are just examples of how second-guessing parenting decisions can seem cruel. So don't spam the blog with nastiness regarding this posting.” ...........
I totally would have thought you were being a prick !

The thing is, you took so long to think out what you were going to write to me and I hate to tell you, I’ve heard all of your “assumptions” before. People make pot shot remarks or crack jokes and pat themselves on the back like they’re the first to ever say such a thing.

Re:

1. Couldn’t be further from the truth.
2. Ok, wait, call me crazy but I’m married and repeated sexual exploits are accepted , right ? Then, I’m supposed to have some kids of my own then run around adopting other people’s !?!?
3. Get over the fucking tree branches.
4. Don’t you worry sugar buns, we got this taken care of.
5. So….6 kids and I don’t have family values.

I could spend all day telling you how all of your “assumptions” are untrue, I could even get you many other people in the world that would tell you the same thing, but it wouldn’t make a damn bit of difference. You're opinion is formed rock solid.

The article was about Julie Cornell, and you click on comments and you’re supposed to say what you think about the article you just read. I know it’s kind of hard to understand how this all works, but don’t worry you’ll get it.

p.s. I do agree that I went overboard on my media comment. So I do apologize for that.

Hey Jess, I figured you'd heard it all before and thus would be a (reasonably) good sport about it all.

If you know WOI, you'd know they ARE that desperate. They have always been the dog of the Des Moines market, and always will. They're even worse than KM3rd, because at least (In)Action 3 News was #1 at one time. WOI is where terrible broadcasters go to die, or at least kill their careers and try something more lucrative, like overnight cashier at the Kwik-E-Mart.

Also, I'm available..ummmm..for commentary segements at weddings and birthday parties...ummm...since I don't have enough jobs as it is and...ummm...my wife thinks I'm at home way....ummm...too much now.

I'm sorry Jess, but I think you must have me confused with someone else. I only have eyes for Tipper, and she has never let me down. This would indicate your cockblock-fu is not as powerful as you would believe.

While installing bamboo floors would be an eco-friendly first choice, not using the pre-existing flooring and disposing of it would be tantamount to eco-terrorism. Remember, recycle first.

And I would like to laud you for installing the Canadian Football League in your light sockets. That league is a bit dimmer than normal lighting and makes reading somewhat hard for a man of my advancing years. You are of attention whore age, and should suffer no ill side-effects. Perhaps you could have your husband install the NBA in his condoms, so that you might get the same feelings as Tipper does from the "Wooden" Al Gore.
