World-Herald Passes On Revealing Controversial Site

The New Nebraska Network, self-billed as "the state's premiere source of progressive online political commentary and community-building," reveals what many readers of Monday's Omaha World-Herald newspaper were wondering: just what was the URL of that website that offers detailed sex information to teenagers?

The World-Herald story, written by Joseph Morton, reported that several lawmakers in the Midlands thought the site was not appropriate, "both in the graphic detail it provides and the messages it sends on topics such as premarital sex and abortion."

"It's enough to make an old person blush," Rep. Lee Terry (R) told Morton. "If that was in a printed magazine, it would be wrapped (in brown paper) and put behind a counter, and no teens would be allowed to buy it."

After revealing that the site in question is TeenWire.com, New Nebraska Network writes:

"It's a shame the World-Herald would allow the site to be insulted like this without even giving it a name and listing its address. But, then those few young people who read the World-Herald might actually be able to get some real information about safe and responsible sexual health. Of course, we wouldn't want that.

The World-Herald would also be encouraging people to use the internet - something else they're clearly afraid of, if we're to judge based on the ongoing embarrassment they call Omaha.com."

Whatever happened to "sunshine is the best disinfectant" or "the marketplace of ideas"?
I might also add in it's otherwise excellent piece on generational poverty, the World-herald did not list Planned Parenthood as a source for family planning information.
So, bravo to the New Nebraska Network, to teenwire.com, and to other sources out there who teach about safer sex, family planning, and sex education. For young people without solid two parent families and/or a responsible adult, this is the best safety net we can have.

Anybody know any good wrestling sites?

I'm as nutty of a left winger as you'll find - I still think McGovern got screwed - but 3:01 PM is whack. Bravo to the OWH for showing some good ol' common sense and decency.

Progressive is just another word for a lefter than left agenda. Insulting the establishment, that's really progressive, man.

Anonymous said...

7:03 p.m. - try Huskermat.com or themat.com

Anonymous said...

I think McGovern was screwed as well.
However, I didn't criticize the OWH for not printing every salacious detail, I criticized them for withholding sources of information relevant to the stories.
If they wrote "go here for additional information" it would not offend Liberal Larry's delicate sensibilities. When they didn't offer the opportunity for people to decide for themselves if the information in question was offensive, the OWH committed censorship (as well as denying people the chance to see just how much of a twit Lee Terry truly is).
Progressive does not mean lefter than left, it reinforces the central role of the people in the government.

Anonymous said...

Once again, more name-calling from the looney left. Why call Terry names, it just takes away from any shred of credibility you might be able to contribute. Progressive is code for "this is the extremist left agenda."

The OWH didn't exercise censorship, they exercised good judgement.

the OWH are a bunch of wrestling gay's... they suck! i wish Nebraska would move out of the old days and get a new newspaper in the state that actually had good info... take for example.. http://www.azcentral.com -partners with The Arizona Republic Newspaper in Phoenix, AZ - that is a good news source. They even partner with a local TV station, 12News and all share stories and info. so lets see, they have TV, Newspaper, Internet.. wow! what a concept!

Hopefully everybody on the blog will be at Hooter's tonight to support Matt and his weekly game of Travia. No foolin', check out the site. Isn't it great that he's giving so much back to all of his listeners, he really epitomizes what Omaha radio is all about. His go UMass blog is extremely entertaining.

3:01 pm. If the people in this area haven't realized that Lee Terry is a twit by now...It ain't gonna never happen.

Anonymous said...

lee terry is a twit??? I always thought he was a schmuck...

Anonymous said...

Wait, so he's not a ditwad ? Ugh, this is so confusing.....

Anonymous said...

Actually he's been an effective Congressman who has done a lot of good things for his district. Must all be a bunch of lefties, nothing but criticize, criticize with no original solutions.

Dumb Anguish said...

Now, now. Don't misunderstand. I think Lee Terry is fantastic!

Granted, he breaks his promises and, in his 8 years in Congress, has only sponsored one bill that eventually became law.

But he's so just darn sexy that you can forgive him for all that.

Matt Perrault is gay...
So what?

I'm a wrestling fan...
OK

Lee Terry is a twit/schmuck/ditwad/whatever...

Few of us enlightened folks do

Doesn't understand what an effective Congressman does and is somewhere left of Dumb Anguish...
Quite obvious

Has no idea how to goof and have fun and takes this blog way too seriously...
Duh.

Lee Terry Jr(AND Sr.) are classic examples of why this state will never progress beyond 1956 thinking. If you're rich, white, totally consumed with personal wealth and power, unenlightened to any social problems or progress, and totally devoid of any desire to open your eyes to the real world.....then they are perfect. To the rest of us, they're perfect idiots. And oh yeah.........Fubar is gay.

--Cubby hatching from a seed pod--

Anonymous said...

Social progress = flaming liberal/person who wants to spend everyone else's money through endless taxation.

And you take that back about Fubar :-)

Anonymous said...

I am a spineless liberal person, and I like what Mike Fahey and the Terry Inc. family have done for and to this city. So what if we raise taxes? The more money the government has control of (whether its your money or not) is good for everyone. People and independant newspapers can print and say whatever they want, as long as they don't give an opinion, tell mostly true things, or never hurt anyone's feelings. Everybody has to get along.

Since there's no new place to post this, I'll do it here. TV anchors (specifically in this case Jamie McCutcheon (Raab)...we don't ask much. Show up on time. Read the news. Smile pretty. And for God's sake, pronounce the names of people and places correctly. It's pronounced Ti-bet, NOT TIGH-bet. Geeeeezzzz.....

--Even great tatas don't help--

Anonymous said...

What's the Raab part?

Anonymous said...

@ 5:13 AM - her married name.

Anonymous said...

Oops! Sorry - I meant her maiden name. I somehow managed to get McCutcheon and Sheila Brummer (who got married not too far back) crossed.

Anonymous said...

Jamie's married/ Well, there went my day.

Anonymous said...

I don't think she's married...one is her real name, the other is her nome' de news.

P.S. Fubar is still gay.

--Belvedere Jehosephat Hunnicutt--

still nothing on the job cuts at the World Herald?

Wasn't there a character named McCutcheon on Showtime's The L Word?

Anonymous said...

I eat my own poop when I get bored.

Anonymous said...

She's welcome to mispronounce any word she wants no matter what her last name is. And nice tats DO help!

1:29 - Why the hatin' on Fubar? Shouldn't that be directed at Perrault?

Anonymous said...

Fubar has strange body odor so bad that it stunts her hair's growth.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the clarification.

Anonymous said...

McCutcheon is engaged and will be married soon.

Which is a shame, because she is hot as hell.

A bigger shame? She's not very nice.

Anonymous said...

And the day continues to get worse.

Anonymous said...

I guess great tatas, a high paying pud job, and the inability to pronounce common names and places gives you the right to be a snot. Seems to be a lot of them in that business. Speaking of hot.......wonder if Fubar would be interested in our sister?

Anybody have any new ideas for Perrault nicknames?

Anonymous said...

Been there, done that. How about nicknames for Fubars tatas?

Anonymous said...

Haven't seen 'em so I wouldn't know what to call 'em. Can you catch up a newbie on The Perrault list, maybe a quick recap?

Anonymous said...

Heard about some big layoffs at the World Herald. Anything to that?

Anonymous said...

Whatever layoffs there were, it doesn't appear to have improved the quality of the product. It has, however, made John Gottschalk, Terry Kroeger and Harold Andersen richer men.

I am The Perrault.

As I left work Monday, I had 590 on from listening to Dan Patrick earlier and much to my pleasant surprise - NO PERRAULT!!!!!!!!

On "Vacation" and Pedey Mac was on...what a breath of fresh air. I knew then that this was going to be a great week!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Y'all dissed the City Weekly's new radio show, now y'r pesterin' for more posts...

Why should the CW folks oblige?

Qwi'chr dissn' an' maybe y'all will get a post in return.

Anonymous said...

8:43 PM - That certainly makes the week a little brighter and helps heal the disappointment of finding out McCutcheon is getting married. The only thing that might make it better is if that's a Permanent Vacation - and I don't mean the great Aerosmith album I already own.

Anonymous said...

This is from the "this blog has hit rock bottom" category...which local news/weather babe do you think was most likely to have had "pictures" taken of them at some point early in their career? And more importanly, where can I see them?

Ok, another freekin' genius. Channel Sux ran a really important lead story tonight about neighborhood clean-up *yawn*. In the piece, Brian Latham(?) was sitting in the back of a truck showing people odd items that were discarded, including a "perfectly good French Horn". Err, Brian? That was a Euphonium, you dork. That's like showing a banana and telling people that it's a watermelon. Where do they GET these people, anyway.

Anonymous said...

That someone who tosses out the word "dork" while admitting knowing the difference between a french horn and a euphonium gives a whole new meaning to "pot calling the kettle black"!
This one time at band camp........

Anonymous said...

Heh heh -- he said -- dork -- heh heh.

Put that guy on Todd & Tyler -- he'll fit right in -- heh heh

Anonymous said...

You mean "Weenie & the Butt"... live on the radio in the morning here in the Big O?

I know the difference between a french horn and, and..umm...that other thing. It is because I'm smarter than you.

Bill Murray's character in that movie was John Winger.

Which, of course, is no relation to Kip Winger.

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, Venkman was his Ghostbusters character, thanks for the clarifiation. I'm sure if he knew Winger would have existed they'd have picked a different name.

Anonymous said...

Winger didn't exist at that time. Stripes came out late 70's, Winger hit it big about a decade later.
