World-Herald Layoffs

The Omaha World-Herald recently laid off a handful of employees, including veteran Jake Thompson, who had been in the World-Herald’s Washington, D.C., bureau for several years.

Also among those let go, according to sources at the World-Herald: photo assignment editor Craig Chandler, business reporter Mike Avok and graphic designer Sid Jablonski.

Calls to the World-Herald for comment were not returned.

Matt Perrault is gay.

I agree

John Gottschalk couldn't take that trip to Bermuda this winter, and somebody had to pay for it.

If they are SERIOUS about saving money...how about firing a chunk of the do-nothing administrators and hangers-on they have employed there? Cutting already-underpaid talent hardly seems a worthy cost-cutting measure.

Geez, you're whining about a few employees loosing their job at a newspaper you love to criticize? Thousands of newspaper employees are getting the axe all over the country. The very liberal Seattle Times just cut 200 in Seattle and 100 more in Maine and other papers they own.

Newsflash... John Gottschalk (tireless suppporter and donor to everything good in Omaha) retired as Publisher last year.

Wow, W-H management would be mad if they knew one of their staff was using the internet, much posting to a blog.

Anonymous said...

5:10 PM - "...much posting to a blog." Is J-Dub starting to do anonymous posts now to avoid scrutiny?

Anonymous said...

whoops, should have been "much less posting to a blog."

Anonymous said...

Well, now we know it wasn't J-Dub because it was a polite, short admission of a boo-boo. No talks of an embargo or 821-word tirade. Props to 6:05 AM.

Anonymous said...

Hey 3:08, newsflash for you -- Gottschalk is still a part of the OWH family and is still getting paid by the publication. So is his predecessor, Harold Andersen.

If they want to make cuts that matter, they need to cut from the top down. Get rid of the deadweights, paper pushers and slackers in management that wouldn't know a breaking news story if it came up and bit them on the taint.

your mom works for the w-h

Anonymous said...

Perhaps they should realize that paper is dead and that the internet is the new media frontier. Nah, they won't.

Anonymous said...

I have not been laid off. I am still here clones...errr....I mean listeners!

Who would want to read a newspaper when all you have to do is listen to me. I will tell what is important. I am all knowing. I am the news.

I am...

Anyone hear Becka fighting with his producer for letting some caller saying "cock" get out on the air?

Anonymous said...

That was hilarious...Becka was absolutely pissed off about that. Funniest thing I've heard on Omaha radio in some time...

Anonymous said...

I thought the guy said Perrault, not the C word.

Anonymous said...

Why is there no story on the Pelini v. Daily Nebraskan? My goodness, the head football coach dropped f-bombs at the college newspaper and threatend to keep them out of the press corps! Is Pelini off his rocker or is the DN simply the Daily Rag? You discuss.

Anonymous said...

If you read the editorial, it was questionable at best and it's obvious the DN is trying to push the envelope well beyond the bounds of common sense. They've already gotten in dutch with the governor and the volleyball coach, and now they're going after Pelini. The Daily Nebraskan used to be a top-notch training ground for some outstanding journalists, but it appears it's becoming a training ground for the next generation of staffers for the National Enquirer.

I talked about it!

I talked about it!

I talked about it!

Why aren't you people listening to me?

You people don't deserve me.

Sincerely,

The Perrault

Anonymous said...

You're right, Perrault...we deserve something BETTER.

Your resignation would be a good starting point...

To 6:55 a.m.:

Just because sports radio has four hours to fill and has to milk something/anything for as long as it can (because all they have to talk about is Husker football) does not make it a story.

Today, I'm sure we'll be spending two hours discussing who's the #2 free safety, and then opening it up to callers.

Ted Brockman is Back! His blog is now more active than this one. New post dated yesterday.

What is "the perrault"? I am new in the area, and it sounds like this subject is takled about alot.

You guys use it in conjuction with some kind of disease it seems like. Please explain?? Thanks! It's great coming to omaha.

To 8:40 a.m.

So, the DN has pissed off, in this order, the head volleyball coach, the Governor and now the head football coach who have all gone bonkers over stories or editorials they have written in the past year and have threatend to ban a media outlet and that is not a story?

You must work for the OWH. Or did.

Anonymous said...

As I've said before newbie if you had bothered to have read previous posts, all you need to know about me is that I am the best thing that happened to Omaha radio since the invention of the transistor.

Robert freakin Marconi may have invented the radio, I perfected it. Just ask me.

I am bigger than Oprah. I am the alpha and the omega. I am bigger than U.S. Steel.

Why do I have to repeat myself? Why don't you people just listen to the largest sports talk show in the midwest...nay...the world!

Newbie, you will bow down before my altar and worship at the side of Travis Justice and bask in my glory.

I am.

The Perrault.

I think we'd be better off peeing on Matt's altar...

Anonymous said...

Funny He sounds much Shorter on the Air!...And Gay

Anonymous said...

I will teach the meaning of the word respect 12:05 p.m.

I am not gay. I'm simply not a happy person to begin with.

I'm a bitter 31 year old with a chip on my shoulder who is stuck in a cow pasture with a tall building or two. You people make me sick.

Don't you recognize greatness when you see it?

Sincerely,

The Perrault

Anonymous said...

12:20 -- of course we recognize greatness when we see it. That should tell you something...

That ol' gray blog just ain't what it used to be. All it is is whining about Jimmy T and High School Cribs. If all he has is a Channel 6 ax to grind, it's become boring very quickly. Ranting about everybody is what made Ted readable.

Going after Jimmy T., the Cigar Store Indian and Chaps is pretty dull and obvious stuff.

Anonymous said...

One can only wonder what Ted's life would be like today if only WOWT hadn't rejected him.
Probably medication-free.....

Reply to 9:34 a.m.:

Let me get this straight: Every time the student newspaper gets into a pissing match with some public figure the Journal-Star and World Herald should write about it?

Gee, wouldn't that be feeding the very essence of what the student newspaper wants and/or craves? Attention? For somebody to notice them? And then what happens when they know they can get it?

Just my 2 cents.

Anonymous said...

7:29 p.m. you don't think the head football coach going ape poo over and dropping four letter expletives to a news outlet isn't news?

Really?

Good.

That last post was garbage. You obviously don't have a child who comes home as is crying because the other kids made fun of him for being fat. If you want to come after someone, come after me. I'm a man. That's all I have to say.

Somewhat back on track, I hate the frickin' OWH. I only take the Sunday paper for the ads, and if they didn't sell those ads, I'd not subscribe for the editorial content at all! They suck. Plain and simple. And they have never had the balls to run comic strips like Bloom County or Zippy the Pinhead. In fact, they don't even run the very tasty strip Get Fuzzy, preferring a lot of white space on the page. Doonesbury run on the editorial page! Comics will destroy the mind of American Youth!!!

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
