KOOO Revamps Morning Show

Press Release From NRG Media:

Omaha’s new pop rock station, “The Big O”, KOOO-FM is launching its new morning show featuring long-time Omaha broadcaster Allison Steele and radio producer and Nebraska native Tommy O. The talented duo will officially launch April 21st according to Program Director Billy Shears who stated, “Allison and Tommy O will make a dynamic team and bring an enthusiastic voice to morning drive.”

Allison SteeleAllison Steele is a Nebraska Radio Hall of Fame broadcaster having spent 14 years on Omaha Radio at a variety of stations including the former KLTQ-FM. A Minnesota native, Steele was raised on a dairy farm, but dreamed of travel and a career in radio broadcasting. Her successful on-air journey has led her to on-air roles across the Midwest and to the island state as a disc jockey for great radio stations in Colorado, Maine, Ohio and Hawaii. Currently, Steele is the midday host at Mix 101.9FM in Chicago, IL, but she is eager to return home. “I am so thrilled to be returning to Omaha and can’t wait to work with Tommy O. “The Big O” is making such a huge impact on Omaha radio and I am excited to be a part of its growth,” exclaimed Steele.

Tommy O is currently the producer for KQKQ’s Morning Show with Pat and JT. The Nebraska native graduated from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1998 and immediately launched his radio career as the evening disc jockey at KSRZ-FM in Omaha. He joined the KQKQ Morning Show in 2002 providing on-air production elements and entertainment features, coordination of various on-air interviews and station contests. Commenting that he will now be competing against the morning show he once produced, Tommy O stated, “I have learned so much during my six years with Pat and JT that I am ready to launch my own program. Allison and I have great synergy and we can’t wait to get behind the mic and make a positive impact on a city we both know and love. ”

“The Big O” launched in late December 2007 to fill a void in Omaha Radio by providing listeners with an upbeat and artful blend of the greatest pop rock hits of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today. The station’s name and call letters were designed to evoke the symbolic representation of its hometown, the city of Omaha, with the big “O” as striking as its namesake. The music-intensive station features the voice talents of “Mr. Jay Peterman” (John O’Hurely) from Seinfeld fame and its new local on-air talent lineup includes “The Big O Morning Show with Allison Steele and Tommy O,” middays with long-time Omaha broadcaster Shari Stone and afternoon drive with station Program Director Billy Shears.

How old are you 6:46, 8? I think That new morning show will be pretty strong. I remember Steele from when I was growing up, she going to bring a lot back to Omaha.

Anonymous said...

Steele isn't bad but Tommy O is terrible. They must lose half their listeners when he fills in for the morning show.

"to fill a void in Omaha Radio by providing listeners with an upbeat and artful blend of the greatest pop rock hits of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today"

yes, just what we need more boston, kenny loggins and bob seger. Nobody was playing that crap before 101.9. Correction - like 5 stations were already playing that crap. why can't we get a real active rocker back?

Anonymous said...

Omaha radio sucks, plain and simple. Wasn't this the lady that this column just did a story on who achieved her dream of getting a gig in Chicago? Either she lost that gig or is getting a substantial pay hike.

Anonymous said...

Indeed it was the one who achieved her dream in Chicago....

"Journalism and PR experts, commence your critique..."

Very well.

Matt Perrault is gay!

Anonymous said...

I guess Chicago wasn't her kind of town.

Anonymous said...

How in the hell is that chick in the Nebraska Radio Hall of Fame??

What does it take to get in such an esteemed organization??? Not being able to carry listeners after T N T?

Programming the City with "ten in a row you don't know"

Give me a break.... This is going to be fun to watch implode.

Anonymous said...

So I guess all that drech about her living the dream in Chicago on an earlier blog on this site was equivalent to Michael Beasley babbling during the NCAA tournament how much he loved K-State and how important it was for him to get his degree. Now he's declared for the NBA draft. Yuck.

Will this show have at least a weekly segment about our great sport of wrestling? We deserve it because our sport is so great and so few people pay attention to our sport, even in Olympic years.

Jim Nasium said...

My comment has nothing to do with the subject of the story, but then again neither did several others comments...
Kudo's to whomever comes up with the clever identity names here! Your opinions are b/s, but you've got a knack for creating some junior high-ish toilet humor that brings a smile to my face...if for just a few seconds.
Now grow up, shut off your computer for a while, give your left hand a rest, and go get a real job!

Anonymous said...

What kind of a goofy station name is that? KOOOOOOOO? Are they trying to appeal to the 10-month old demographic?

Anonymous said...

Oh, SNAP 9:20

Anonymous said...

So let's sum up, shall we?

Failed local radio hacks leave town, fail, and return to Omaha to fail yet again.

I'm guessing Russian Roulette is the game of choice for radio people.

Anonymous said...

My critique:

Where can I find KOOO on the dial?

Anonymous said...

I see I have more competition for me and my station.

When will you punks learn that I am the god of all media. I would have been king but some moron named Stern took that name already. I don't know who he thinks he is.

Nonetheless, this chick and her little producer will kneel before The Perrault and kiss my headphones.

Sincerely,

The Perrault

8:17,

I agree with your desire to launch an active rock station . Problem with that is active rock isn't a viable format these days unless its done RIGHT .Its a tough sell but can be successful if you hire the RIGHT person for the job . A HANDS ON PD who KNOWS how to execute the format without consulting with corporate .Only a handful of successful active rock stations exist today . KIBZ: Lincoln,KQRC:K.C,WRIF:Detroit,KUPD:Phoenix,KISW:Seattle. These stations do well because the PDs hired to do the job KNOW what to do . Podell,McFeelie,Richards,(formally of WRCX Chicago..hired Mancow) Sheridan,Edwards. Active rock is a puzzle. You have to know the music and you need a MD who knows how to massage the music logs instead of hitting F-9 on the computer. Off topic . I apologize. Good Luck Allison.

"The Big O launched in late December 2007 to fill a void in Omaha Radio by providing listeners with an upbeat and artful blend of the greatest pop rock hits of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today."

Sean, you need to be a little more careful in your editing. The above quote sounds suspiciously like a verbatim press release from 101.9. The format was launched in order to remove higher priced talent like Jack Swanda and replace it with canned radio (see also KGOR after 5PM). I'd love to read a post about how radio execs judge this move--does it indicate the failure of canned radio?

Anonymous said...

Ooops. My bad. It IS directly from a press release and Sean attributed it appropriately. Sorry.

Anonymous said...

Wow, Jimmy created a profile just to use three hack lines and left hand jerkoff reference? First of all, the right hand is the hand of choice of most strokers. Must be a J-Dub protege. Left hand indeed.

Oh, and 10:18 using Mancow and success in the same post should be flagged as a violation. The hackiest of all hacks, there have been few worse than him.

What an horribly-written press release. Did Windrum write it?

What A horribly-written critique of A horribly-written press release. Did your 5-year-old nephew write that, horatio???

Not to be a total b*tch here, but I'm sure I can't be the only one offended by this "personality" adopting and ripping off the name of one of the greatest women in the history of broadcasting!

I'm sorry, it just makes me sick whenever I hear the misuse of the name.

Oh, and for those who don't know what I'm talking about, look here:

Omababe - Thanks for the link. I grew up in New York and that name sounded familiar to me with these recent articles of someone using the same name.

I've never listened to the Omaha version, but I thought that name sounded familiar and that was why!

Thanks again. Gotta love originality.

Ok Lets just look at a passage from an earlier comment...

Only a handful of successful active rock stations exist today . KIBZ: Lincoln,KQRC:K.C,WRIF:Detroit,KUPD:Phoenix,KISW:Seattle. These stations do well because the PDs hired to do the job KNOW what to do . Podell,McFeelie,Richards,(formally of WRCX Chicago..hired Mancow) Sheridan,Edwards

PLEASE NEVER NEVER EVER compare Stations in Phoenix, Seattle and Detroit with anything from Lincoln... The Blaze pales in comparison to the quality product put out by the big guys....

Must be a Blaze employee...

Didn't Sheridan program The Dam?

8:04 -- originality is unemployed on your post. Congratulations on being uninspiring, yet pathetic...

Anonymous said...

8:43, 6:38 and 2:59 - Don't you have to go grab a train that needs spray-painting?

Rocket and Artie? Wow, they were brutal back then. Let's just have another Supermouth contest. So 8:35, is there a color that looked good on Rocket?

Trying to remember if there are any other hacky hosts we've forgotten...

Anonymous said...

Mike Rotch -- that first PP was laughably pathetic. Nice recovery at the end, though...

Anonymous said...

After reading the first blog, I need to respond before I read anything else...
"I remember listening to you when I was growing up." Allison, don't let it get to you... I remember hearing the first time (notice I said, 'first time?') I heard that. But the difference is, I AM OLD. Allison, you're NOT old and you defy the stereotype of the hot sounding gal on the radio because... YOU ARE HOT! Can't wait to hear your voice in the morning.
OH! - I did look ahead to a couple other blogs. Screw you the person dissing Tommy O. He's doing fine all by himself. But, give him a partner like Allison and I think the two will jell and produce something cool!
I'll be listening!

Anonymous said...

Maybe Allison will pull some "GEL" out of his hair from that picture and things will work for them...then again, maybe not.

Uck... those aren't "talents". More like randomly played lame quips. Let's hope we'll soon have 24/7 live talent and be rid of the O'Hurley unpleasantness.

Anonymous said...

Nice to see this blog finally cover local radio.

FYI, word is that 6 won't be keeping Sheila Brummer around after a couple of months.

Yet Fubar is still given a live mic to play with, as is the Notorious Matty P.

Sweet Jesus what a great day!

Anonymous said...

It's obvious that Mr. Obvious has many issues and is far beyond the capabilities of modern medicine in regards to the potential for a cure for what ails him.

Which means we must resort to drastic measures and force him to watch Channel 3's newscast 24 hours a day, while strapped to a chair, until he recovers from his dreadful disease.

Strap him in, boys...

Anonymous said...

i'm closing in on 30. i'm not single, but could be! ;) hahahaha

Wow.. this media blog.. that just happens to have a show on the same group of stations is publishing a press release about one of their sister stations...

Interesting.. Very interesting.

Anonymous said...

Even if City weekly does have a show on a sister station of 101.9, is this story not in the realm of news covered on this blog?

Maybe you're right though. This might be some kind of conspiracy involving the city weekly, Allison Steele, The Perrault and wrestling!

Anonymous said...

Just for the record, I don't like wrestling.

I just don't like it when two sweaty, muscular men lock together in holds and get on top of each other on a Matt...I mean mat.

No, don't like it at all.

P.S. Does anybody have a kleenex?

Anonymous said...

Hey Mr. Obvious-- Obviously you're oblivious to the fact that this is a MEDIA BLOG.

Since you're obviously oblivious to this blog's history, let me inform you: we blog readers formerly enjoyed blog entries on new talent.

Since you're obviously unaware of this, maybe you should pick up your phone to request that the folks who run the blog resume the bios of new talent.

Why would the poor phone receptionist at Channel 7 want each and every blog participant calling to inquire of station goings-on? Obviously, you're oblivious that the receptionist has better things to do.

So go put on your Mr. Obvious costume with prerequsite spandex undies on the outside of your colored pantyhose and go tackle a pro wrestler... or radio host.

Anonymous said...

Why bash the obvious one. One blogger makes a call, posts it, and it's done. Obviously so few people here know or care who the latest new reporter is at 7 or that would have been done already. Shows some media skills and do a little digging. And is that 11" from the ground standing up? Most likely, but I'll do my fact-checking and call Perrault, I'm sure he'll know.

Anonymous said...

I have done it!

I have not only got you your ballpark but I, and I alone, have saved Mayor Fahey's job!

Had it not been for me, you idiots would have recalled the mayor, lost the ballpark and the CWS!

Because I talked about it on my radio show and because I was the only one in the media who was in support of this idea from the get go and because I am a GOD, you are all saved from the Save Rosenblatt morons!

Worship me you peons!

Sincerely,

The Perrault

Anonymous said...

I do like that they play old to new songs but now CD105.9 is less important. Either 92.3, 99.9, 105.9,or 96.1 should be ACTIVE rock becasue they are all non-active rock blends.
KOOO is blended with mostly clasic rock and newer pop/rock KEZO is classic rock with new rock.

Anonymous said...

Forget all the local stuff, satellite rules! No commercials, it's fantastic.

Anonymous said...

Active Rock as mentioned before in this blog can be executed properly if the right PD is hired for the job. One who knows the format inside out. Imaging,Promotions,Street Presence,Solid on air talent, music flow and most important, a good morning that sets the benchmark for the stations overall performance. I would love to hear an active rock station in Omaha. The real question : Is Active Rock a viable format in 2008 ? Is it profitable ?

Anonymous said...

I don't know about any of that, it's way beyond my comprehension. Ask Perrault, he knows all, he'll have the answers we're all seeking to discover.

Anonymous said...

Perrault:

Anonymous said...

A cool Active Rock station in Nebraska? We could only hope & dream....and that would be a big wet one, by the way...because it isn't happening.

Notice how they moved the Blaze from a fairly weak signal at 106.3 to a weaker signal at 104.1? They obviously have a ton of faith in Sheridan down in Lincoln!! The only songs he knows how to pick are the ones the record companies/promoters will pay him to play. No promotions, no street presence, no nothing. Yawn. Thank God for mp3s, cuz the radio isn't cutting it down there!

XM satellite radio, the only viable radio option out there.
