Omaha World-Herald reporter Chad Purcell works himself into a frenzy writing about the behind-the-scenes action in the ESPN mobile broadcast unit in a story that appears in Thursday's editions of the newspaper.Already, several people who work in the local TV industry have e-mailed Media Watch, each of them wondering pretty much the same thing: Would the World-Herald write a similar story if a local TV station was producing a national broadcast?
The answer here is "no."
For nearly 10 years, the state's largest newspaper has taken the attitude that "competing media" are not to be seen nor heard from on its pages. When it comes to reporting on news concerning national TV items (i.e. Rosie leaving "The View" or the latest ratings for the "CBS Evening News"), the World-Herald typically relegates it to the back (or last) page of the paper.
Follow-up To That CWS Headline
We now have proof that the "Beavers by a Hair" headline seen earlier in this week's World-Herald was an intentional double entendre cooked up by the newspaper's deputy presentation editor.
The Beavers headline is more proof that even Larry King has quit reading the Worldherald.
ReplyDeleteThe only time the boys in newspaperland are willing to write a story about national media is when they're trying to convince eveyone (or themselves) how great Omaha is or how "big-time" we are.
ReplyDeleteThe paper routinely does a splendid job of making us look like a bunch of too-eager-to-please yokels. Take, for example, a recent Mike "My Daughter Was Raped" Kelly column in which he surmised that the increase in big-name acts like the Rolling Stones coming to Omaha was due to artists liking the Qwest Center and/or Omaha itself.
Rather than recognizing that those acts come here now because it's now profitable for promoters to bring them in, Kelly concludes that it's because our arena is better than anyone else's and because we're so gosh-darned likeable.
Where's Obbop? This has to bring him out!

ReplyDeleteThe "Beaver" headline is a perfect example of what the World-Herald sports department has become. An "MTV" generation of slackers (including the sports editor) who think they know everything, who think what they produce on a daily basis is an acceptable product and who aren't willing to listen and learn from the few veterans who remain in the department.

Hmmm.....
So Teddy boy has crawled out from under his rock. Even as lame as OWH can be, their writers are more creative and intelligible than Ted was in the year or two he was posting his lame drivel.

ReplyDeleteTed's right on the money again. Mike Kelley made reference to his daughter's rape in the Sunday World Herald. He makes me long for the good ol days of Rainbow writing about Star Wars and caring for newborns.
